Most fun I had in weeks

  • I'm currently trying to get around registering to download a skyrim mod from Nexusmod. So I thought http://bugmenot.com/view/skyrim.nexusmods.com would be a sensible choice.

Well, none of the accounts work, but the bann-reasons you get for the individual accounts are crazy. Go on, try them.

Also just for the sake of the wtf: All banns have global IDs and can be accessed from anywhere:  Strong language warning

    No.

    Where is the WTF?

All users have a global UUID. All error messages have a default url. If you pass a non-banned UUID to the error message it will just say that your account is banned (even if you are validly logged in). If you pass a UUID that was actually banned you will get the reason for why the account was banned.

If this was a site that actually mattered I'm pretty sure one could actually do a lot of crazy cross-scripting or error scamming things with this.

Well, for me it's the only place I know to get good mods (SkyUI for converting that dumb consoleified interface into something that you can actually properly use on a "real" computer is awesome - I couldn't live without it). I don't know if that "Steam Workshop" could provide them as well - I never got into that because, well, I already had a Nexus account for Oblivion, Fallout 3/NV etc., so I never felt the need to go anywhere else. Sure, there's also a lot of crap mods, but "wagonloads of crap with some exquisite pearls hidden among it" is part of the definition of "community modding", I think.

Oh, you live in Las Vegas. Oh God, I am so sorry.

Actually I'm usually in Vegas only from early June to mid-August. My real home is in Key Largo but I hate the summer in Florida, it's unbearable.

Regarding Las Vegas: it is a beautiful city, with the mountains all around and the superb weather, and everything is dirt cheap and high-quality (food, booze, cars). But lately the city is back in full-blast vice mode (the latest trend is the "toptional" pool parties) and the economy is terrible so you start seeing things like dive bars and strippers clubs accepting food stamps (under the table) or casinos giving out free drinks to locals when they cash out their paycheck there. It's not Detroit but the mood is definitely gloomy. I'm thinking about renting out the condo to one of those agencies who take care of everything and come back less often. That's what I do with my cottage in Idaho Falls and even if it pays a bit less it's a lot better than dealing with tenants (which are by definition poor people).

Many moons ago, after arriving in Vegas on a late night flight with a group of guys for a bachelor party, we asked the cabbie stop at a convenience store just outside town. Inside, I was amused to find a small bank of slot machines. We proceeded to buy booze, cigarettes, and cheap cigars to last for days. However, when I asked the clerk about nudie mags, they became indignant. "This is a family establishment! We don't carry that type of thing!!"

Vice roll call: Gambling - present. Alcohol - present. Tobacco - present. Boobies... Boobies?

I found the morality line intriguing.

Things have changed. Now there are free XXX newspapers vending machines every 25 feet everywhere in a 3 miles radius from the Strip and you can ask the clerk at the gas bar which escort service he recommends. And it's a fact that booze and gambling are available everywhere, there are even slot machines at the grocery store. Some of the creepiest motels downtown on Fremont also have slot machines in the lobby; the kind of place where putting a $10 bill in the slot machine makes you a high-flyer and is a terrific chick magnet (as long as you don't mind the kind of chicks that lives in that ecosystem).

Why people will take a game designed to be played with a controller and go to enormous lengths to make it work in a shitty fashion with a keyboard and mouse is simply beyond me. Because apparently if I plug a Xbox 360 controller into my computer it's no longer "real". I guess?

Hey here's a thought: maybe when PCs can move 1/10th the product as even the shittiest console, game companies will start developing for keyboards and mouses.

QFT. Playing Oblivion on PC was particularly irking, because for some reason I could never get it to recognize the controller, but I could only hotkey 1-8 because consoles used the D pad for hotkeys. Also, any game where you have to drive (GTA and LA Noire come to mind) sucks rocks using a keyboard IMO.

I played Skyrim with a mouse and G13 and honestly believe the experience would have been inferior with another input method.

The G13 is programmable so that even if a game has obnoxious controls that aren't remappable you can force it into something you like, and even record/script complex actions, though this sometimes feels like cheating. Generally I leave the game at its default mappings and then set up a profile (takes maybe 10 minutes) setting up each action in the G13 with a descriptive name and then mapping those actions to keys that feel natural to me.

    You've got to be kidding.

Granted, I never played Skyrim on an Xbox 360 controller, but I did play Oblivion on the 360 and on the PC, and it was horribly unplayable on the 360, mostly due to the stupid controller.  It's essentially a variant on a FPS engine, and you just cannot aim properly with a thumbstick.  The only FPSs I've seen that were not ridiculously unplayable on a console were the Metroid Prime series, because they understood that you just cannot aim properly with a thumbstick, and coded up an auto-aim feature.  But of course, on a TES game, auto-aim would actively get in the way, particularly in shops or other areas where there are lots of potential targets all close together, so the only way to actually do anything if you don't have a mouse is to move the thumbstick verrrrry... slooowly... annnnd... preciiiiisely.

No thanks.  I'll stick with my mouse, and a keyboard that gives me more than 10 buttons to work with.

  • @Anonymouse said:

Yeah, I got fed up with that UI quite quickly. Never really got into gaming on the console, I used to own a 360, but it red-ringed on me and I never had the urge to spend another couple hundred on replacing it. I guess I've always been a PC gamer at heart, and that's where I'm most comfortable (darn kids, get off my lawn!). The only thing I really prefer console controllers for is racing games. Besides, I don't think I would have derived nearly the entertainment out of Skyrim, Oblivion, and Fallout III as I have without mods. Some of them are really quite clever (Alternate Variants, SkyTest, and SkyBirds spring to mind).

Meh.  I got out of the Xbox scene before those games came out, but I remember plenty of other FPSs from earlier days (Halo 3, Modern Warfare, etc) and multiplayer had very little to do with aiming and shooting.  Some games were more egregious about it than others, but almost invariably "multiplayer match" turned out to be synonimous with "grenade race."  And since the controller is still the same, I find it difficult to imagine that things would have changed all that much in the last 5 years.

Which, by the way, brings us to the Xbox controller.  Typical Microsoft product: blatantly rip off the best thing out there among the competition, (the Dual Shock, in this case,) but get a bunch of details wrong that make it a less useful product.  For example, the Dual Shock's stick placement is symmetrical.  The XBox's is not.  How in the world did they manage to screw that up?  How is getting something that obvious wrong even possible?!?  And while we're on the subject of thumbsticks, the heads of Dual Shock's sticks are convex and well-padded with soft rubber.  The 360's heads are concave and have only a single layer of soft plastic padding over a hard plastic stick, which means that pressing on the stick for any length of time (such as a marathon TES session) becomes incredibly painful very quickly.  And even pressing down directly on the middle of the stick instead of pressing against the rim, in order to avoid the pain of the sharp edge digging into your thumb, doesn't help; for no good reason, they put hard bumps on the top of the stick that dig into your thumb anyway!  That's not a thumbstick, it's a freaking instrument of torture!

Citation needed.  What in the world does thumbstick placement (which has to do with thumbs) have to do with holding the controller (which has to do with wrapping the rest of your hand around the handles)?  If anything, putting the left stick further away from the handle  makes the 360's harder to hold!

Don't be ridiculous.  I've never been a "Lunix" fan, because they can never get basic user interface details right. (Hint: If a user that does not know that a command line exists is not able to perform ordinary, day-to-day tasks, your operating system is a failure.)  Also, video game controllers as we know them didn't exist in 1975, and the Dual Shock was different in many ways than what came before it.  I have no problems with things that are different as long as they're improvements.  It's just that the Xbox controller's changes all seem to be steps backwards instead of forwards.

...what?  OK, I'm sorry, but that has to be one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. If your thumbs are getting all sweaty when you're playing video games, then you're obviously... umm... I don't even know what to say to that, actually.  But I have the vague feeling that the only way to finish that sentence in a way that makes any sense at all would involve some sort of innuendo.

I didn't say anything about downward pressure.  From the context, it should be clear that I'm talking about pressure on the rim (ie tilting the stick in a direction, which is what you normally use it for.)

I didn't say anything about downward pressure. From the context, it should be clear that I'm talking about pressure on the rim (ie tilting the stick in a direction, which is what you normally use it for.)

Why are you putting pressure on the RIM? Your thumb should be in the middle, not at the rim. Go find a third grader and have them show you how to use the damned thing.

    Here, I'll help:

Your thumb is INSIDE the concave bit, that's the FUCKING POINT of it. Why are you pressing your thumb AGAINST the stick!?

Before this conversation, I would have thought it impossible for a normal human being to pick up a Xbox 360 controller and somehow not figure out how to put his hands on it. I guess I was wrong!

    @Mason Wheeler said:

Oh, so in other words you have no idea how to play a TES game. I see.

Yes: I don't bother picking up pots and pans. Why the fuck would I be? The only thing I'm looting is corpses and chests, and neither requires much aim.

Why people will take a game designed to be played with a controller and go to enormous lengths to make it work in a shitty fashion with a keyboard and mouse is simply beyond me.

I play Dark Souls (worst PC port of best console game this decade) with a keyboard and mouse. With the two requisite mods to make the damn game playable on PCs of course - one that unlocks the reslution from 480p and the other removes the camera jitter when playing with mouse. Come at me bro.

I know people who prefer controllers over KB/M (especially for Dark Souls) and I've tried using them a few times in my life, but the lack of any fidelity in aiming always puts me off.

And it's better at 4am on a weekend?  If you are in a CVS at 4am you're doing something very wrong.

I have Dark Souls still in cellophane for PS3. I was wanting to beat Demon's Souls but that game made me want to embed my controller deeply into the nearest wall.

You know what my favorite feature is? If your Wifi hiccups for a second, it dumps you at the title screen with no warning and no opportunity to save or reconnect; do not pass Go, do not collect $200. Fuck that game. Fuck it forever.

If you have a PC, a 360 and a PS3, TRWTF is not always playing the PC versions, what with them almost always being much, much better.

I agree, but choice of platform != choice of controller. If the game is built for a 360 controller, play it with a 360 controller. Duh.

No. If you own a game, play it on the controller and in the method that you are the most comfortable playing on. Adapting your play style to someone else's definition of 'correct' is just going to lead to frustration.

Personally I hate any kind of first-person game on a gamepad. Not sure why, but I'm just more comfortable with a keyboard and mouse. Probably because I've been playing that way for years, and I personally feel the mouse gives you better fine control than a thumb stick. Right or wrong, keyboard and mouse works for me and that's the play style I'm happy with.

At least the PC version is playable offline. I unplug the internet when I have to use Cheat Engine to get past bosses.

...which I already discussed. If your thumb is inside the concave part, then unless it's smaller than the finger of our hypothetical third grader, those hard bumps are going to be digging into it.

Physical pressure.  If you're sweating from the extreme exertion of playing a video game, go see a doctor.  Seriously.  (Either that or turn on the air conditioning.)

I recently beat Deus Ex: Human Revolution on Give Me Deus Ex difficulty, mostly pacifist run (I broke pacifist to save Malik, but still got the good morality endings); but fuck, with games like this, I'd rather watch someone else struggle with it. Kaizo Mario is especially entertaining to watch (ridiculously difficult Super Mario World romhack). It would be beyond frustrating to play, but watching someone else swearing at the screen gets to be quite amusing.

Ok well I've done this crazy thing called "trying both ways" and I can guarantee the game is 30 times better with the Xbox 360 controller it was explicitly designed to work with.

Why the fuck would you drop so much $$$ on that Logitech bullshit before buying a much more useful $30 controller that virtually every AAA game is built around? PC gamer snobs are stupid.

No offense, but most of my AAA games are built around keyboard+mouse or just play better with keyboard and mouse. The only exception to this rule are Action Adventure games, Driving games, and fighting games. Every single other game on PC is better with a keyboard and mouse.

Personally, I just prefer to play the games that need a controller on a console, but sometimes steam just has sales too good to pass up.

They aren't digging into it, because you're not putting pressure on it. Try to keep up.

Your body can't tell the difference and reacts the same. Microsoft designed the Xbox 360 controller for human beings.

The bumps aren't fucking MOTORIZED. They aren't digging into your thumb, you're digging your thumb into them. Just stop doing that. Idiot.

    That's so kaizo!!!

... but seriously, stop watching those LPs. You're everything wrong with the LP fans right now.

Skyrim isn't. What about Super Meat Boy? Rayman Origins?

There's shitloads of PC games that are better with a controller.
