    Well, clearly, AWD comes first alphabetically.

    F is pretty easy to draw.

    R takes the most ink to print.

    I think you're being facetious, but the answer is that humans hold themselves to a higher standard than animals.

    @boomzilla said:

    Does the animal need to consent to getting its shots at the vet? To getting spayed or neutered? Of course not. So what's special about sex with a human that requires consent? This is a serious question for a silly discussion.

    The cynic in me would note that we are now seriously debating the merits of bestiality soon after the gay marriage thing was kinda-sorta settled. Second look at pedophilia?

    Still, there are other ways that we treat animals differently than people. Why a higher standard for this but not for things like owning them? Eating them? Etc?

    I'm not really being facetious, but I don't really care about this issue, except as far as I like arguing about pointless things. But then again, things like cockfighting or dogfighting don't especially bother me either.

  • @boomzilla said:

    I wasn't making a judgment call, I was just expanding upon Blakey's reasoning. Personally, I think sex with or eating animals is wrong, but owning them is fine so long as they're being well cared-for. Owned animals have it better than those in nature.

    @boomzilla said:

    Huh. Well, fighting them causes prolonged pain and long-term damage, whereas slaughtering them is pretty quick.

    Hofstadter's views on consciousness from I Am a Strange Loop were pretty interesting. Basically, consciousness emerges when a system is able to observe itself and differentiate itself as a distinct entity from its environment. Insects don't seem to have a complex enough nervous system to be actually conscious; most mammals do.

    So, I feel some degree of empathy for mammals, but I still eat them because I accept that life feeding upon life is the natural order. I'm opposed to them being treated inhumanely, but I'm not really motivated to actively try and change the world. People who don't squish bugs because it's mean seem a bit naive and misguided.

    Yes. I've made peace with my speciesist self, and the suffering of the inferior species doesn't bother me very much.

    You see this:

    They get as big as your fucking hand. I don't give a shit if it "leaves me alone", that thing has no right to live.

    Then consider smaller spiders like brown recluses or black widows (I've had at least two serious brown recluse bites in my life.. one on my heel required steroid ointment and the use of crutches for two weeks.) Even the non-venomous ones deserve to die die die.

    The spiders around here look like this:

    That ball-shaped body is about the size of the head of a pin. It's basically all legs. The part that isn't legs is designed specifically for eating flies.

    Maybe you should come live here -- once you've made sure there are no spiders hitching a ride with you.

    That is exactly the reason why I don't kill spiders... because what I hate with a passion is stuff that tries to suck my blood and leaves me itching all over: fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, etc. So while there is little chance of the former two being caught in a spider web, whenever I see a spider I am hoping at least for the latter to become its next meal.

    Apart from that I think spiders are pretty cool, by the way.

    I like to joke that the reason I avoid seafood is that they're wild animals and that eating them is not sustainable due to things like over fishing. Actually, I just think they taste terrible. But at the level of our population, farming is definitely more sustainable, and the food is generally better, if for no other reason than we breed for what we want out of the animal. And they animals probably lead calmer lives, so the meat is more tender and in the case of beef, more tasty fat.

    It looks like fish are catching up with the rest of the animal world and going to farm raised. This is why there is so much tilapia at the grocery store.

    And thus the world works as intended. Let's face it, Obama was the best of the choices available in 2008. Hilary Clinton? lols. McCain might have been ok in 2000, but in 2008 it looked like the RNC had cut off his balls or something. And do really want Sarah Palin a heart attack away from the presidency?
