A quick experiment in dumb (Chrome)

  • See that file icon behind my Chrome titlebar there? Grab your copy of Chrome on Windows, and position the window title over a icon similarly.

Now, click your mouse to the left of the right edge of the icon, and drag your window around. Works like a charm.

Now, click your mouse to the right of the right edge of the icon, and drag yo-- what's that? You can't drag the window from there?

    WTF.

It's from a hobby project of mine, Hi Are You. If you use an OS that isn't a retard, you can populate your desktop background using the RSS feed. The particular one in that screenshot appears to be November 15th's.

  • See? Linux is better!

Looks like my vastly superior OS wasn't updating the RSS feed, because the RSS auto-update was turned off. ahem.

But the Chrome window thing happened today, and I have 100% repro on that work desktop. Here at home? No repro. So maybe it's just a really subtle bug and this whole WTF is premature.

  • Does the file need to be in the background?  Because Ben L's repro does nothing of the sort.

I can't find a position where a file icon makes any difference whatsoever to the dragability of the browser window.

However, I can drag using blakeyrat's window titlebar as a handle, so I can't reproduce with blakey's browser window either.

Your text directions as to where to place my mouse pointer are confusing. You should have provided screenshots with a visible mouse pointer.

    Caption button?

  • I find it absolutely unlikely that this behavior is related tothe icon underneath. Have you tried moving it to see if the problematic region moves with it?

More likely there is some unrelated, transparent but not mouse-transparent always-on-top window covering that region... try this:

    http://choorucode.com/2012/10/25/identify-process-of-a-window-using-process-explorer/

  • The icon has nothing to do with it. It's just that blakeyrat's screenshots don't show the mouse pointer, so he needed some way to indicate at what point on the screen this behaviour started.

In other words, like so many things on this site, it's a confusing solution to a problem that shouldn't exist.

    Caption button?

Min/Max/Close buttons are a few pixels off in Windows 7. the close button usually sticks off like a pointy blade on the rounded corner. Presumably because their special theming was written to emulate Vista and the changes to Win7 defy their assumptions.

Both. I'm giving Blakey a hard time. But in all seriousness, this is quite possible THE perfect example of when cursor-in-screenshot would have been appropriate.  It is quite literally a screen shot where the main bit of information being conveyed is the position of the on screen cursor.

Could not reproduce on Win7 x64. Also, before I see it, I won't believe that's not just chrome freezing and/or your mouse doing weird things. If you think about it, that bug would need a VERY weird interaction between chrome's custom windowing, aero glass and private data of a listview that belongs to another window of a different process (the desktop).
If that bug really exists, I want to see the code behind this on the front page ASAP.

THIS IS NOT A HELP FORUM AND BLAKEY WASN'T ASKING FOR YOUR GODDAMNED HELP!

Actually, until I saw the second shot, I thought it was just him making a very subtle meta joke poking fun at his previous rants about screen shot cursors. That's obviously not what happened, but then I thought about the guy on that thread who talked about using your mouse cursor to harass flies that land on your monitor. I've done that before. It's fun. More fun than blakeyrat threads where he shows how retarded his computer is.

  •  No repro in Vista either.

Duuuh? So do I. That's why I didn't suggest in the OP that the icon had anything at fucking all to do with it. DOES NOBODY ON THIS FORUM KNOW HOW TO READ?!

    @georgir said:

Considering the entire bug is about being able to drag the window from certain points in the titlebar and not from other points in the titlebar, yes I dragged it SEVERAL DOZEN TIMES. And like I said above, 100% repro on my work machine, although I haven't seen it on my home machine.

That just happens to stay exactly in-sync with the Chrome window in real-time? Occam's Razor says it's a bug in Chrome.

Yeah that bug still exists, and yeah Chrome windows still look like shit due to it. I've given up hope on that one. I don't think the Aero Glass window corners changed between Vista and Win7, I think this is just special Chrome retardation.

BTW, the really weird thing is that the divider between window border and content on the left and right sides of the window is, as far as I can tell, pixel-perfect. So all they need to do is align the window controls to the same width they're already aligning every other fucking thing. You'd think they'd come across that "fix" by accident sooner or later.

The first step in your repro instructions is to find an icon and position the window over it. I suppose we're supposed to be psychic and know that this step is completely irrelevant.

Then why in Void's name did you use an icon as a marker, instead of DRAWING A GODDAMN LINE WITH YOUR PAINT PROGRAM?

Bronies don't want to fuck animals. Besides I'm a shitty Brony, I haven't even watched all of season 2, much less anything newer. I just find the entire Brony "thing" compelling for some reason. I like weird fandoms, as long as they're harmless.

    Generally speaking.

There is probably some overlap, but believe me, the "furry" component overrides any "brony" component by far.

Now you guys have me looking for that creepy guy who makes MLP videos and "interacts" with the ponies, and goddamned it was hilarious and goddamned I can't find them now... Yessss, I found them! Prepare to be creeped-out!

You idiots drove my PMV to 301+ views. Goddamned. EDIT: and 2 of you assholes hit the Like button! You're ruining it! *cries*

OK, the rest of the steps say that the left of the icon is draggable and the right of the icon is not. The icon remains pivotal in the bug description.

Your bug report described the bug poorly. It happens. Own up to it.

A much better criticism would be, "nobody on Earth can repro the damned thing, not even you Blakeyrat you cur! You disgusting worm! You human filth!". But yes, go ahead and focus on the icon.

Shit, you're completely right- it has the same switchblade off the curve appearance on Windows Vista. Evidently I have been far too charitable towards Chrome in my previous rants.

It's sort of ironic in a way, since it pretends to look similar to Windows Aero appearance on every OS by default, but can't seem to get it right on the only one that it's supposed to look like that on. MS themselves learned the whole "do NOT fuck with the window manager or you'll look like shit later" thing with Word 95. Because an italicized Titlebar was simply THAT important at the time.
