  • Are you trying to tell us something?

  • I was trying to find an appropriate gif to post here amongst the lots of pictures I have in a folder, so I typed ".gif" into Windows Explorer.

    Naturally the Windows image viewer does not support animated gifs, so it opens them in IE by default. However opening several at the same time opens a new window for every file instead of oppening them in tabs aswould be more logical. Dragging multiple files into IE or Firefox does not seem to work either, so I just started opening them one by one. But for some reason every time I close IE, Windows Explorer scrolls back to the top making it impossible not to lose track of where I was.

  •  Here's a couple more animated gifs BTW:

    Replicatroll.

    I always liked how the replicator was like this magic technology with a seemingly-infinite number of uses, but they just used it to make coffee. And then, they'd be in a situation where they'd need some kind of physical item they didn't have, and nobody would ever replicate it. Or even suggest it. (Sometimes they would, and then there'd be this weak of excuse of "Well, the replicator can't make a solid, two foot bar of steel. Too difficult. It can make 87 varieties of coffee, though.")

    Criticize Voyager for the 20,000 reasons its terrible, but at least it averted this particular trope. At one point they build an entire Runabout-sized shuttlecraft by replicating all the parts and piecing them together-- the only limitation is the size of part they can make.

    That said, they still never fucking got transporters, and still made 47 weak excuses why the transporter couldn't be used to solve the problem-of-the-week. "Primary systems are offline, we can't use transports to beam them up!" "What about the transporters in the shuttles? You know. We have 4 shuttles. They each have transporters. And are 100% independent of the ship's power system." "IN HUNDREDS OF YEARS OF SPACE TRAVEL NOBODY THOUGHT OF THAT!!!!!"

    And Voyager made the holodecks even worse, by making them run with some kind of super magic-power that can only be used for holodecks and nothing else. Giving the writers the excuse to write terrible holodeck episodes even when suffering from power shortages. Who designed that ship? Dumbshits.

    To be fair, the only Voyager I ever saw was the Warp 10 / lizard babies one, many, many years ago. For obvious reasons I never saw another.

    I liked the DSN where they were beaming crew from a shuttle but the transporter couldn't reassemble them for some reason, so they had to store them in the "buffer", including in the holosuite computers, so they ended up in Bashir's 007 fantasy.

    But that's the problem.  In 40+ years of Star Trek they used the replicator for something other than a cup of coffee ONE TIME.   After 400 years, nobody ever thought to make bigger replicators so they could produce something other than cups of tea?  WTF?  And what happens to all those empty tea cups after Picard has his Earl Gray Hot? @blakeyrat said:

    I think that's where the writers showed their total lack of imagination.  They created all this technology (replicators, transporters, etc) but then realized that the tech could easily solve any "problem of the week", so they were constantly falling back on lame excuses why they couldn't use the tech.

    "We've lost power" --  for the 27,483rd time.  Seriously, WTF.  In the 24th century the Enterprise has the reliablity of a 1952 Studebaker.

    All of their computer and security systems are apparently written in Java because they are easily hacked and bypassed by every bad guy who comes along.

    Only the core 4 or 5 characters of any show know anything or can actually do anything. The rest of the crew is totally incompetent.

    The Original Series didn't have replicators. (The logic of not having replicators after you already have transporters makes no damned sense, but hey it was the 60s. And they had a machine that spit out ice cream, so who needs replicators when you have that?)

    @El_Heffe said:

    Deep Space 9 has several plotlines based around "industrial replicators" being delivered to Bajor where they can be used to produce farming equipment. Replicators that large just aren't placed on starships or space stations. Presumably replicators don't scale well, and one big enough to create a tractor is the size of a factory or something.

    @El_Heffe said:

    You place it back in the replicator tray and say "computer, recycle" and it does. They show this several times in each series.

    Yes, which I believe is why the concept for Enterprise was to create a Star Trek series set before they could just magically solve every problem using Borg nanoprobes or bio-neural gel-packs (the two biggest culprits on Voyager) or re-modulating the deflector dish (both Next Gen and Voyager were bad about this one; fortunately Deep Space 9 didn't have a deflector dish.)

    Unfortunately, they staffed Enterprise with the same hack writers who had been shitting out crap for Voyager, and despite the promising setting, they ended up ignoring all the possibilities it offered. "No transporters in Enterprise! ... oh wait they have one for 'cargo' and by episode 3 they're using it to transport people same as every other Star Trek." "No shields in Enterprise! ... oh wait they have 'hull plates' that somehow act exactly like shields despite not being shields." "No Borg in Enterprise! ... oh wait there's a fucking Borg episode what the fuck guys what the fuck are you doing what the fuck!"

    That's a conceit of any show in this genre. The same applies to Battlestar Galactica. (Including that extremely blatant example, "Starbuck, you're the best shot inside a cockpit, therefore take this sniper rifle and cover me." "Uh we're a carrier, don't we have like... future-Marines?" "No. Take rifle. Cover me." "I'm a fighter pilo--" "RIFLE!"

    The only show that really bucked that trend was Stargate SG-1 where they make it clear through throwaway dialog and some plot lines that the other "SG" teams are just as busy doing crazy shit as SG-1... they just don't happen to be the ones the show follows.

    No, I think it's from the Animated series. You can clearly see a Vulcan if you invert the image and flip it to negative colors.
