Windows 10 icons
-
I can't be arsed to write up a witty post to go with this story, and I've got some webs and sites to write, so sorry in advance.
Microsoft have managed to find a way to fuck up the UI in their promising new OS. They've changed the icons to attempt to attain a "modern and fresh look". What they've actually attained is some kind of fugly 80s throwback.
I'm no graphics designer, but I know for a fact that I could do a better job.
Filed under: Well, I suppose they had to give the YTS guy something to do
-
Eh, they're not offensively bad, and at least consistent with the whole "modern" design. What's sillier is that they apparently went for realistic HDD icons, but not removable disks...

Ok. Let's see it. Put that money where your mouth is. Challenge accepted.
-
I'm not sure I agree.
-
The yellow's a bit sudden, but that's an easy saturation fix; will take seconds.
As for the removable drives, also not an issue; after all, there are so many different designs out there…
-

I think the "This computer" icon is atrocious. Modern icons don't have that sort of fake 3D perspective, they're supposed to be flat.
I'm also not a fan of the weird shape of the folders. Most software packages and OS use the same folder icon, it's pretty well recognised, and someone here decided to change the shape of it.
If you guys like them, maybe it's just me...

I've not got time right now as I'm trying to get a buttload of stuff done before going on holiday on Wednesday.
I'll have a go though when I get time.
I feel like I should tell you that the judges of the competition will be me and my mum. The upshot being that my icons are probably going to be judged to be better than the MS ones.
Filed under: and that the "icons" will just be smudges left on my kitchen table from when I ate breakfast

Most software packages and OS use the same folder icon
This would presumably include all the various *nix window managers, each of which has its own default folder icon, not to mention a dozen alternatives, each as different from each other as hedgehogs and Galilean moons?
-
Yeah, it looks terrible. But you know Microsoft, they have to completely redesign the look and feel (and naming scheme) of Windows (and everything else) every 2 iterations, probably some kind of obsessive-compulsive disorder on a corporate scale.
Also, your screenshot is full of JPG artifacts even though it's a PNG.

Close, but wrong.
Most WMs use the current GTK or Qt icon theme.
-
Well… fair enough. But it's not like the GTK and Qt icons are overly similar. And they differ from the half-dozen WIndows icons there have been, and the Mac OS/OSX icons.
-
They range from meh to really bad. What really ruins the impression are the old Vista-like icons strewn all over the place.
WIP I guess, I'll hold my pitchforks until they are done.
-
Because making yet another contest to redesign all the system icons is easy and fun, but fixing that bug that crashes your system randomly every month is boring.
That's the problem of free software projects where nobody has any real incentive to do the hard work.
-
The people making the icons aren't the same people writing the code… not on a project the size of GTK or Qt anyway…
-

I concur, but it's Microsoft and it's a strangely worrying precedent.
I did quite like the Windows 8 icon set, but I have a seething hatred for Metro, especially as they shoehorned it into their server OSes and removed the start bar. Whoever made that decision needs shooting because there's no way in hell that metro is suitable for a server.

I'm happy actually by how things turned out. When the Metro/Modern UI was first shown and everyone was running around cursing at Microsoft, I predicted that the next version of Windows would be basically Windows 8 with the stupid decisions (like getting rid of windows) reversed and more integration between Modern apps and desktop. And I was proved right by Windows 8.1 and 10! :-)
So anyway, now I'm fairly sure that I'm smarter than all of Microsoft.
-
Yes, those are some butt ugly icons right there. Makes iOS8 icons look pretty already.

Didn't they did this with Win8? Maybe I missed Windows9.

Yeah, me too. I think Microsoft are determined to learn things the hard way rather than exercise common sense.

That's a pretty low bar, but whatever makes you happy ;-)

Windows9.
Doesn't exist because
if (version.beginsWith("Windows 9"))
inside legacy apps would break them because they're expecting 95/98.
-
I feel like I should tell you that the judges of the competition will be me and my mum.
You should release it as the "icons only a mother could love" icon set.

It'd be good if that mother was "Mother Russia".
I need to go and play Red Alert...
-
Oh look, excuses. Bukbukbukbukaaaa!
-
OK, I just "made" a slightly better icon theme. Here:
-
They're an order of magnitude better than the Windows 10 icons.
-
I like how everyone is assuming these icons are final, and won't be changed wholesale before release
-
By themselves, yes, but they don't fit much with the rest of the Windows theme.
I suppose I could find a better match amongst the dozens (hundreds?) of icon themes for GTK+ and KDE but that would require work.
I kinda like this one though

Sometimes I wish MS would just say Fuck You instead of bending over backwards making "compatibility" changes because of asshole developers.

Which one of those two things makes Microsoft money? Hint: not the "fuck you" option.

I know... but I can dream...
(GetVersion[Ex] being one of my most hated compatibility hacks. Yeah, just lie to me unless I tell you I know about you.)

I wonder how many people say this before going off to play a DOS game or something
-
Bad example, you can just play DOS games in a DOS emulator.
-
The fact you can get a DOS emulator is something. Ever tried playing a Mac classic game on anything newer than 10.4?
-
“I stopped testing because of the icons”
ICONS ARE SRS BSNS

I'm a rather big fan of https://numixproject.org
Although you are kinda boned on the KDE front if you want the complete theme to fit.
-

Baloney.

It's not as if they don't do that with every new version, either.
