800×300 video without stretching
-
Let's say I have some 800×300 video I want to upload to YouTube. How much padding do I need before YouTube will show the video without stretching it? 720p seems like the logical choice, but it's more padding than video at that point:
It looks like I can double the size of the video at that point, but nope, 720p is 1280 pixels wide, not 1600.
As the stuff in the video is about 30 distinct colors total, scaling to a non-integer scale isn't really an option.
360p is almost the right height, but I'd need two videos played side-by-side to fit the entire source video in.
What do I do?
-
...use a different site?
I can't think of a way to pad/scale the video well for YouTube. Which will bugger up the video anyway.
-
Widescreen 480p? That's 854x480.
-
Where the fuck did you get 800x300 video?
-
What do I do?
IIRC you can upload in 4:3 and youtube will autoletterbox for you. try uploading 800x400 and see.
-
Considering it's BenL and he mentions 30 distinct colors, I'd guess it's Dwarf Fortress. With that in mind, I'm in no way surprised that it's output ends up having a weird-ass resolution (i.e., 800x300).
-
80×25 character terminal with 10×12px glyph images.
-
You know. The last time I played DF, it supported arbitrary terminal sizes. And was vastly less shit if you used tiles rather than glyphs.
-
Can you recommend a tileset that doesn't require modified raws?
-
It's been a few years. At the time, that described most good tilesets.
Wouldn't surprise me if the modding community has stuck their heads all the way up their own arses and threw away the entire concept that the base game was worth playing, though
-

It seems to work except for some weird shit with the text at the bottom.
-
Most of the tilesets now use weird characters like ÿ for additional tiles and have modifications to the raws so that ÿ represents certain types of rocks or whatever.
-
Yep. Up their own arses. DF is a good game made unpalatable by its fans.
Anyway, just scale your damned terminal to 720p.
-
I'm guessing it rhymes with Forf Dortress.
You've already laid-out every single option. I'm not sure what you expect from this thread-- obviously 720p is the only way you can make this work.
I will say you might throw the "don't multiply by a fraction" rule out the window once you see how YouTube's compressor (or rather re-compressor) works. Why not just try a normal stretching and see how it looks? It'll be fuzzy a bit, but probably fine.
EDIT: as Weng says, if you can just get the damned game to output 720p in the first place, that'd be ideal. Damned.
-
720p works out to 128×60, so it should work. I've decided to run inside xvfb-run instead of GNU screen so I don't have to worry about making my ssh client taller than my 1080p screen when setting it up.

Ooh, YouTube has a special "720p50" setting that I'd never seen before this video.
-
Where the fuck did you get 800x300 video?
Default Dwarf Fortress fonts result in a window that size.
Ben, unless you're really set on using your particular font, why not use a font with different metrics?
-
That's PAL framerate.
Looks like

Guessing that 298 is actually 50fps there, if 136 being 25 is any indication.

What's that about open source causing bugs not to be fixed, @blakeyrat?

What's that about open source causing bugs not to be fixed, @blakeyrat?
Sounds like gibberish. Are you implying I said "open source CAUSES bugs not to be fixed?"
-
To be fair, you did reply faster than the open source devs did.
-
Everything I've seen points to the suggestion that there needs to be one or more "core" developers that actively review and merge pull requests as well as actively working on improving the project.
Without that, well, it doesn't turn out well.
I feel obliged to edit this to say that there's a spectrum here.
-
gasp
The open source community is toxic
TOXIC I say!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11!!1!one1.0

OH NOES I failed to fix a bug because open source exists! IT CAUSED ME TO FAIL FIXING THE BUG!

Remember, folks, everything he says is true (in his own mind) so there's your confirmation.

There's something visually weird about this screenshot for me - it looks 3D. Does anyone else get this effect? The red text looks closest, the yellow in the mid-ground, and the blue and white in the background....

At first, I thought you were tripping, or something, but I think I can see it too...

Human vision is weird sometimes ;)

It doesn't matter. No one is going to watch it.

Your resource pack is ugly and you should feel bad.

It's a random GIS, not my resource pack, and I always fel bad anyway, so...*ooh*, my knees...
