North Korea hacks South Korean banks
-
This just in.
There is a "breaking news overlay strip" on the regular tv now, saying that North Korea hacked South Korean banks by acquiring the "security certificates".I wonder if those certificates are the same thing as what I have to use to do internet banking with millions of plugins.
-
No!
Say it isn't so!
Cargo cult security doesn't actually keep you safe?
Whatever shall we do?
-
Bury your head in the sand and see if it helps?

It saddens me to know that I'm being more secure with a bunch of forum posts written by dicks than the entire financial sector is being with all the money in the world.
Congratulations, WTDWTF, you are more important to me than your money is to your bank.

Why do you say "cargo cult" in this case?

Can't believe I didn't make that joke in my post.

It's ok, you're young, you'll le...
Oh..
-
Because bank security tends to be "Put these magic security things out there and worship the security gods, and they will keep us safe". Hence crap like "security questions" and "Your password may not contain special characters"
-
That may be the case in the US, but here in Europe, our banks actually know something about security

You guys are both retarded. This is about Korea. The information we have is that the Norks got their hands on some certificates, whatever that means.
-
Well yeah. I'm basing this on the (limited) amount of information I know on Korean banks...
-
This is about Korea
OK...

To be fair, there's a bunch of stuff in there that's basically the "these people should be fired, blacklisted from the industry and probably sued" database.
The financial industry merely handles the entire global economy. Small taters.

Looking around, it seems that ROK banks have been on the receiving end of increased cyber attacks from the North, but I don't see any evidence that they've been successful there. OTOH, it seems like they've been able to hack into the phones of "senior officials," whoever they are.

Ah, so that's where all the people who worked at News Of The World went...
-
Probably referring to all these, ahem, "special" security practices that South Korean banks use (by order of the government), such as requiring browser plugins that alter your computer's IP routing tables.
Those things must add 5 vulnerabilities each. Great security measures.

On precisely what do you base this?
I have worked in the finance industry. I have seen what goes on.

Ah, so that's where all the people who worked at News Of The World went...No, they moved to "The Sun on Sunday" which is little more than a rebrand.

The world needs more Ed McMahons.

There was a court case in the UK that I heard about many years ago where the argument by the bank was that their ATM systems were perfectly secure because they were written in machine code, and (paraphrasing) βif you make any mistakes in machine code, it just crashesβ. I hope to god that practices are better than that now, but I really wouldn't count on itβ¦
