Android tablet
-
So there was an Android tablet revealed at the Google event, but it sounds like nothing special and is on the expensive side. So, what are the best Android tablets out now? There's gotta be something better than the 2013 Nexus 7 at that price range now, right?
-
Eh, not IMO. The 2013 N7 is still king of that range to me. There are other offerings (I'm sure Samsung has a newer Galaxy Tab), but I doubt they're worth it...

This. Unless you want to run Discourse and then, well, that's different etc.
-
depends on what you need it for.
Asus has a few 'clones' of the nexus that's a fair bit cheaper than the nexus ( in scandinavia).
The 2013n7's snapdragon 400 does feel very slow compared to the 801 in my oneplus.
I'd recommend something newer if it's for entertainment, if it's just for testing id grab the n7.
The samsungs are a real alternative here - but the screens are the oversaturated amoled kind.
-
The biggest advantage to the Nexus line is Pure Android with up-to-date version of it.
I have a Nexus 6 phone and I much prefer the UI on it than on my Galaxy Tab 10.
I hate Touch Whiz

Nova Launcher will largely fix touch whiz.
it can't do much for the crapfest that is the settings screens as that's a proper app, not the launcher, but it fixes the rest of it no problem.
I picked uit up when i had a galaxy note II and it made the experience much more enjoyable, i just recently dropped it on my Nexus 5 as i was only really using it to keep the apps i don't use hidden from the app view. there have been enough improvements in the stock AOSP launcher that even that is more or less redundant these days and will be completely unnecessary when marshmallow drops.
-

is the n7 2013 available for sale in the us ? i can't find it for sale here.
Buying this late in the cycle means it probably won't be upgraded beyond marshmallow. So it's one year of updates.

Not for sale by Google though, they pulled it when the 6 and 9 dropped :(
And @accalia's Amzn link is a better deal but it didn't onebox

'd!

smile.amazon.com doesn't.... because discourse onebox is whitelist only and doesn't know about smile.amazon.com

Mostly I want it for reading stuff (twitter, reddit, etc), listening to podcasts, and as a remote for my WDTV Live. Probably the most performance-intensive thing I can think of using it for now is G-Stomper Studio, or maybe some games.
-
Touchwiz Home is a lot less offensive on newer Samsung devices.
I used Nova instead of the S3 version (mostly to hide apps) but Touchwiz Home does that now on my S5.
I prefer Touchwiz Home on the S5 to stock Android launcher on my Nexus 5/7. Then again, I'd be quite happy if Blackberry Hub from BB10 was available on AndroidThe settings app isn't perfect, but again is better than it used to be.
-
Yeah, the n7 2013 will work fine for that. Mine has held up well to age... Just don't fill it up...
-
they pulled it when the 6 and 9 dropped
They seem to have stopped stopped EU distribution about the same time... Now only the asus clones are available, but at half of the nexus' price.
The asus pad 7 is around 200 usd - i bought my n 2013 for 420 usd when it was fairly new, have i mentioned prices here are crazy ?
-
ff (twitter, reddit, etc),
bacon reader gets annoying on mine, but it may be because i filled it up.

O.O?
That's gotta be the 32g LTE model, right?
-
32 gb no lte.
-
Sheesh...
That was only like $200 or so here... The LTE model was like $250 IIRC
-
Just don't fill it up...
Does it do the same thing as my old Gingerbread phones did, where if you get below 10% free internal storage (regardless of SD cards or anything else), all the Google services stop working? I haven't seen it on any of my newer devices, but I don't think I've ever filled them.
bacon reader gets annoying on mine,
I used to use it before switching to Relay (which was called something else back then), but I don't remember why.

No, but everything becomes molasses because your IO times go through the roof...
Relay
TIL. Cool

-
Yeah, it's called Relay now, but that was a recent change to comply with this.

If you're willing to go down the cheap Chinese route I have a CUBE TALK 9X that is quite good.

asus
I got their Fonepad for my girlfriend - it's performant and she claims to be happy, but you can't be happy with those horrible, horrible viewing angles. This thing sucks your soul out, condemning you to a miserable life without light.
So no, I wouldn't buy another Asus tablet.
Filed under: the best tablet is the one that runs full Windows anyway
-
You do realise the n7 is made by asus?
-
Yep, and as I said, I wouldn't buy it.
Primarily because hardware these days is 100 percent capable of running a real operating system on a tablet, so putting Android on it is the equivalent of strapping yourself to a wheelchair. But also due to prior experience.
-
The 2013 N7 is still king of that range to me.
Here's another vote for the 2013 Nexus 7, it's a fantastic piece of kit for the price.
-
That may be your definition of a real operating system (Windows), but not everybody agree.
Don't buy a tablet, buy a Surface.
As for people who realize what a tablet is for, we'll continue to use a "fake" operating system.
-
Don't buy a tablet, buy a Surface.
That's kind of funny, considering the direction both Apple and Google have taken their flagship tablets.
-

You can put Debian on it too, you pedantic fuck.

Don't buy a tablet, buy a Surface.
Should we also go out an buy an iPhone instead of a phone and an iPod instead of an MP3 player?
-

Serioulsy, why?
Apple..... walled garden..... no customizeability, every upgrade reduces performance of older devices to crippling degrees....
XCODE! BY THE GODDESS NO! NOT XCODE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
My point was that calling Surface not a tablet is the same as calling an iPod not an MP3 player. It's just that until now only Apple seemed to manage to get people to keep saying that.

An iPhone is a phone. An iPod is an MP3 player.
Surface ? looks more like a powerful laptop where the keyboard was removed and replaced with a crappy detachable one.

*TWITCH*
gah.... bu.... BARK BARK KYON BARK YIP KYON BARK!*
* I could translate that, but i'd have to β β β β β β β ing censor it if i did.... so i won't

Apple users never call an iPad a tablet, they call every tablet an iPad. And it's a crappy one if it's not made by Apple (by their definition).
FYI, I don't own any Apple device. Walled garden and all that.
-
And there are those huge phones that people still call phones, but won't fit in the pocket. And there's also tablets with GSM modules so you can use them as phones. There are also old smartphones with a physical keyboard so... are only those phones? Are modern smartphones just tablets with smaller screens?
Then there's also tablets with detachable full body keyboards. I'm sure I saw at least one of those actually running Android. So... is the OS distinction that matters? But... there's a build of Android that runs on x86!
Oh, maybe it's how powerful it is? But wait, today's Android phones that are considered mid-range have quad-core 1.5 GHz CPUs... I have a freaking dual core (+HT) i5 in my laptop, runs at 1.7 GHz, that's barely any improvement!
My point is: Surface is still a tablet. Yeah, it has a keyboard / stand thiggy, but it's intended to be used as a tablet. Your complaint sounds to me like saying a gaming laptop that someone uses as a desktop replacement is not a laptop because it's too powerful and the person never moves it.
-
Surface ? looks more like a powerful laptop where the keyboard was removed and replaced with a crappy detachable one.
So you'd rather have a shitty device running on a limited operating system with no keyboard at all than a powerful laptop replacement running any OS you like that has a keyboard in standard but can also be used as a tablet.
Gotcha.
Filed under: not sure I'd buy Surface though, lots of cheap and decent Windows tablets on the market
-

An ARM CPU is really not in the same ballpark as an Intel i5 CPU.

Indeed. The ARM chip is over the far fence while the I5 is still in the infield.

When I buy a tablet, I'm not looking for a laptop replacement.
B.t.w., you can connect any bluetooth keyboard on a tablet (as long as it support bluetooth).
Just to be clear, I never said Surface is not a good product. I just don't consider it having the same purpose as a tablet.
Just like I don't consider a Yaris the same as an F-150, even if both can be used to carry people and grocery.
