What the fuck is a Twitter list anyways?

  • Trolleybus Mechanic

    Okay, seriously. What in the holy fuck is a Twitter list? All I know is:

    1. I make a tweet with something like #WebDesign in it
    2. I get followed by a bunch of SEO scumfucker bots
    3. Half of them add me to a Twitter list like "lol_geroge_SEOMASTER/webdesignlistPLUSPLUS"

    I tried Google but still can't figure out what the fuck a Twitter list is. What do they do? What implications are there of being on one? Is there any way off of one, aside from blocked the user? Where do I see which lists I'm on? Where do other people see which lists I'm on?

    how can you see what junkmail lists you are on? or spam lists you are on?

    same thing for twitter.

    block them or move on, but there is no central "this is who we spam" list.

  • It's a list of Twitter accounts. Not sure what part is confusing you...

    If you follow like 500 people on Twitter, maybe you don't want them all in the same timeline. So you can put some of them in lists, then view the list's timeline instead. Or put them in lists and ignore them forever without having to unfollow them. Either way.

    The difference is I DO get a notification when someone adds me to a list. In my notifications tab. So I do know what lists I'm on. But I have no idea what that implies. Does it change how Twitter treats me? If I get put on a "Child Molesting Nazis for Death-Rape of Jews" list, does Twitter start recommending I follow @HitlerAllTheThings ?

    I'm confused by why I'm told I'm put on lists by a notification. If I create a folder in Gmail called "People named Blakeyrat who have a Youtube show called Robots in the News", and I add @ben_lubar to it-- he doesn't get a notification saying so. Me being told I've been put on a list implies I can do something about that-- or that the list is public knowledge somehow.

    Right; it's not confidential. You can view any person's list and who's in it. (Unless their entire account is private, but then you'd get no notification from them at all.)

    @Lorne_Kates said:

    Nothing. There's no implication. The user made a list named X, then added your Twitter handle to the list.

    No.

    I can't even image what you're thinking would happen here.

    I doubt it, but I don't know how Twitter's recommendation system works.

    Better manually follow @HitlerAllTheThings, since you love National Socialism so much.

    Well why not? It's public information, it involves your account.

    But the name of your folders in Gmail are not public information. Twitter lists are.

    Sigh.

    So that's my concern/confusion.

    If anyone can add me to a list, and that list exists only for their own categorization, there's no reason for me to be notified.

    If I can be on a list, and other people can see those lists, but not who is on the lists-- whatever, I don't care. As long as there's no negative implications to my account.

    If I can be on a list-- and other people CAN see I'm on those lists-- then people shouldn't be allowed to put my on a list without my permission. I would think the notifications would be "X wants to add you to the list XXX Camel Lickers" or worse, "Republicans and Other Late Night Standup Punchlines"-- with a "allow/deny", just like if someone tries to add me as a friend on Facebook or something.

    No, that's Social Nationalism I'm into. It's trying to take over nations, but casually as a hobby. There's still gassing of millions of filthy sub-human "others" though, of course.

    Now I'm even more confused. Do you mean a mega-sized super wanker, or a super-sized mega wanker? Or is wanker a verb? 😕

    This has qualities similar to those of Iron.

  • In lojban, that would be (super type-of mega) type-of wankers.

    But it isn't, and it isn't, and nobody would care if it was.

    You can think of lists as a way to create timeline slices. Basically, the intended use is to create a Twitter timeline with a different set of accounts than the ones you follow.

    However, if Bÿ Ḟø1löẇéṙ$10/5000 adds you to a list, block & report for spam

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

    @Lorne_Kates said:

    It's actually a typo. He was calling you a rotary engine, with the implication that you're a tool, but that you weren't smart enough to figure that out.
