I'm a :wtf: but I think Microsoft is, too
-
Long story short, I accidentally changed the password on my main Microsoft Account (I was logging into what I thought was one of my throw away testing email accounts for outlook.com and it was, apparently, just an alias).
Later that night at home, after about 15 minutes of trying to figure out why neither my computer or xbox would let me log in, it dawns on me what happened, so I go and do another password reset and try to set my password back to my old one.
No dice. Apparently ever. I think Microsoft is just being overly paranoid. I already use MFA on the account, and I had a nice randomly generated password to begin with that I'd memorized. I want it back; I'm used to typing it to log in.
I know I'm a for resetting my own password, but come on Microsoft - no password reuse ever? That's harsh.
Bonus : Microsoft has a 16 character password length limit.

no password reuse ever?
I think that if you cycle through a throwaway password you can get an old one back, but it's been probably ten years since I tried (why, yes, I do have a Hotmail account that goes back to about 1996, why do you ask?)
-
IIRC, there's a 30 day lockout period before a password can be reused, but it could be higher.
-
A time-based lockout? That's cold.
-
No, cold would be Oracle's inability to
rationallyreasonably write documentation on how PASSWORD_REUSE_TIME and PASSWORD_REUSE_MAX intersect. That or what the word UNLIMITED means...

I've not tried to do a third password reset, but their error message seemed to indicate that the ban on reuse was forever. Maybe I'll try it later tonight - the problem is that the reset voids all "app" passwords, so my Xbox gets kicked offline when I do the reset, which is annoying.

That's just ... even worse and more annoying because the error message is lying and I highly doubt most people would run into that problem.

I usually just append a exclamation mark, or question mark.
At my last job I had enough devices(on a single account - skydrive apparently logs in separately) that Ms considered my password leaked around once a week.
I was up to"?! (password )?!?!?!" Before I left.
Trwtf is everything being connected to the ms account. VS, Windows, skydrive, mail app, phone, azure, VS code storage etc.

my Xbox gets kicked offline
Look at it this way, it can't get any offline-er, so just stay off it until you're sure one way or t'other.

I already logged back in on it.

I didn't ask.

Who doesn't have a hotmail account dating back to the 90s?
-
-
I wasn't aware that Hotmail had people still signing up for it.
-
Mine's probably racking up spam.
Eat it, spammers.

What if I accidentally signed up for a hotmale.com account instead?
...what if I signed up for a hotmale.com account on purpose?

People that don't remember the era of 50 computer magazine titles and the COMPUTER SHOPPER had 300 newspaper pages of all types of computer gear. And the age of BIX, Delphi, ExecutivePC BBS with 340 modems in his garage..
sigh
People should remember to enjoy these todays will someday be the "good old days."
Life's a b*tch.. and then you die.

Don't expect the post office to deliver - only rain, sleet, snow and mail. grin
