Does @codinghorror work for Google?

Because this is so Discourse:
-
It's either that or they match everything.
-
Well they sure suck with matching anything here!
-
All or nothing, the classic programmer's choice!
-
You should obviously have done this:
-
Google! you have failed me!
that is not the correct results for the query
42
!
-
Bing seems to have decoded it as well, but also includes 42 searches

I know. I found it shocking too. I had expected more reverence for this ultimate number. The fact that42
is*
which is the universal search must mean something, surely. Also that 42 in hex is 2A, which is most decidedly the precursor to "to be".

"Six by nine. Forty two."
"That's it. That's all there is."
"I always thought something was fundamentally wrong with the universe"

#define SIX 1+5 #define NINE 8+1 printf("%d", SIX*NINE);
-
That's one of the more inventive approaches, but I think it misses the point. Pairing the answer “42” with the question “What do you get if you multiply six by nine?” does tell you a lot about life, the universe and everything, along the lines of “it's all a bit of a mistake, things don't add up, and it's really just best not to think about it too much“.
Which is actually a good thing to learn. ;-)
-
Yeah, because it totally wasn't just that Doug felt random one day.
-
so that is how to multiply in base 13
-
The fact that 42 is * which is the universal search must mean something
I was thinking exactly the same thing. Wonder if it's casual or intentional. Maybe we should leave this on digg so people with a lot of spare time can investigate.

You know that if humanity exists forever, there will be a PhD dedicated to this topic?

There are three kinds of people. Those who read this and don't notice anything amiss, those that read this and realize it is wrong and those who read it and realize that it might be correct after all.

things don't add up
According to the radio scripts, someone once wrote in to tell them it does, in base 13. That's too funny to be worth checking.

Yes, and Adams's response was:
I may be a sorry case, but I don't write jokes in base 13.
This whole thing has <dirk> gently amused me for years as the best kind of nerd sniping.

Yes, and Adams's response was:
I'd never heard that before but it does sound like something he'd have said. Also, agree on the nerd sniping.
