Apparently, clicking "reply as linked topic" quotes the post with all the inner quotes and formatting preserved. This totally-unrelated-to-what-I'm-trying-to-do-but-working-the-way-I'd-like-the-relevant-feature-to-work-too would save me so much time in past!

If I understand you correctly, I agree. Quoting in a topic removes every thing. In an unrelated post, I learnt that @riking is the "go to guy" for this sort of stuff :)
