Other: People used to believe the earth was flat. It's easy to figure out today that if the Earth was flat, every place on Earth would see the sun rise at the same time. Only a sphere could explain time zones.
Me: Well, mountains can block the sun. Other obstructions too. But still, it doesn't have to be a sphere, it could be a cube.
Other: There aren't mountains in every "time zone". And a cube would only have 4 time zones.
Me: There are only 4 time zones!!! Pacific, Mountain, Central, and Eastern.

I suppose that depends on how you define a zone. They were all immediately local and at least based on available precision, nearby places should probably be considered to be in the same time zone.

Timezones aren't nearly that old; they only date back to the mid-19th century, when railroads made them necessary.

It "works" because it's carrying a lot less weight than your instincts tell you, and since the cargo* is of such high-value they don't have to worry about efficiency as much as in normal passenger and freight traffic.
*generally, airbus parts.
