Discurse...does things to you
-
I got the 2^10 badge just now. It's interesting that in 9 years, I only had ~650 posts on the CS forums but I've managed to almost double that here in 4 months.
Someone pointed out last week on one of the big threads that Discurse makes it easier to post--apparently that's true.
@Arantor I'm apparently catching up on you.
-
Also, it might be a coincidence but it's twice now that the "suggested topics" list actually has related topics.
They're all in the same category, though, so it might just be a coincidence. Carry on.
-
I'm somewhere between 4x and 5x my post count on CS. (I'd give a more accurate number, but I don't remember my post count more accurately than that, and CS is still 503ing.)
-

But it's a stern chase; expect it to take quite a while…

if frontpage comments count i'm at about 90x my CS post count right now, if they don't count then i'm at $\infinity$ times my CS post count.
:-( still no mathjax.

I think it's a matter of actually getting similar posts. As I understand it, they do try to find legitimately similar stuff. I know that I've gone to post a topic on meta.d, and it's found related stuff for me, and I just went and posted there.
Of course, when it can't find anything, then it just posts a randomized list.

"You made a post, here's more posts. They're all posts; that's how they're related."
-
Mostly I just use it here as a convenient way to see the topics I still have to catch up on every morning.
-
I have a crapload of post from mid-august and earlier that show up as New; other than that, I tend to do the same thing. I'm afraid to try the bastard functions that are loosely analogous to "mark all as read" because the last time I did, posts I participate in were muted.

Yes, you are indeed catching up towards the lofty goal of 2^12, though I suspect @boomzilla will be there before you.
The real question is whether @boomzilla gets to 2^12 before I make it to 2^13, which seems oddly likely at this point in time.

I don't think it's that odd. I got to 2^11 before you got to 2^12, too. I think I'm getting pretty close to 2^12. It's hard to say, of course, because there's no easy way to discount stuff aside from that thread, which is definitely my biggest source of disqualified posts.
-
Well... your profile says 5810 posts, with 1578 in that thread. Allowing for things like the hidden categories we can't easily tell, we can probably call it 5800 - 1600 and say in the region of 4200 - but since you don't have 2^12 yet, we can buttume a few hundred posts that are hidden... but it's only on the order of a few hundred at most.
Me on the other hand, 7523, with 1747 in that thread. Discorounding gets us 7500 - 1750 = 5750. I'm not hundreds away from 2^13.
So it's not odd, it's just my perception of it is.

What even is the point of that thread? I'm kind of afraid to look.
-
To like all the things, didn't you read the opening post?

The original point of that topic was to break stuff by creating a topic with more $thing than Discourse was designed to display. It broke the "likes" column on the topic list. CDCK "fixed" it by removing the column. It broke the green box progress bar whatever you call it thing because it was only wide enough to display 4-digit numbers. CDCK "fixed" it by making it wide enough to display 5-digit numbers; it will break again when the post count gets to 6 digits. That is the current goal, to which end posting on any random subject that pops into your head is encouraged. Well, within limits; posting Dwarf Fortress is frowned upon, of course.
The nominal point is still to break stuff by generating an absurd number of likes, but it is no longer clear that anything will actually break as a result.
-
No, the point was to like all the things. Abusing Discourse was a nice side benefit.
-
@apapadimoulis, is there a way to get a count of the front page comments for registered users?
-
To like all the things, didn't you read the opening post?
No, because I was kind of afraid to look.
-
Yeah, sort of? It's in the Comments table on the "front page" database.
-
But nothing that measly users like myself can use?
-
it will break again when the post count gets to 6 digits
(playing catchup..)
Ours won't. It will break at 7 digits though.
-
Are you just incentivising us to get to ONE MEEEEEEEEEEEELLLION POSTS?
