Full Page Search Plug-in
-
Everyone knows that Disco-Search is TRWTF. Apparently there is a search plugin in existence that gives you full page results. No clue if it even works any more (OP is 5 months old). What do we need to do to try this out?
https://meta.discourse.org/t/full-page-search-plugin-now-available/13791
UPDATE: From Jeff, you can do http://what.thedailywtf.com/?search=search_term
Which gets you a full page of sortable results. Hacky, but better than the shit we have.

I know. Last commit was 2 months ago. Either way...this is something we really need.
-
Either way...a better search in general is something Discourse really needs.
FTFY. But yes, the plugin would probably be nice. It looks more usable that the default search, though based on just the screenshot, it's missing any sort of excerpt feature to show you what post and context your search matched on, which Discourse only has in "search in thread" mode. Also, a better WYSIWYG editor that doesn't try to do the ** bolding when it won't work, like when you try to apply it to only a single letter of a word.
Also, a lot of other things, but that's for other threads.

True. Though the screenshots predate the final commit by a couple of months. I'm actually more worried about the language. Also, there have been several cases where Disco-devs have said, write a plug-in and get more people to install it. So, if we start a wave of people looking for good searching, we might be able to get something here.
At least until Google gets us back to CS level results.

Only gives you the topics, but it seems to give you all (maybe) of them, instead of only the first 10 or whatever the search pop-up shows.
-
Yeah. And it's more or less persistent...so you can open stuff up in new tabs and come back later.
-
instead of only the first 10 or whatever the search pop-up shows
Most the search menu gives is 15, which still isn't enough. Kinda silly to give 5 on the first search, then make you click to get 15, and that's all they'll give you.

Good search thread on meta.d:
Lot's of people ganging up on Jeff.

Haha...and now Jeff closed the topic.

Here we go:
Can we please please PLEASE get search added as priority number one after V1 is released
Funny, I think it should've been a priority well before V1 was released. Or even planned.
Favorite quote so far:
Like @cpradio says, new members are NOT going to stay if they have to go trudging for threads if search isn't working as they expect. And it will chase existing members away if they have to work harder to find what they are looking for.
From Atwood:
single word searches are a particularly tough case
Which is why you make a better search piece, not just go "you need to search better" and dismiss people.
Also, it's hilarious that, according to Atwood, the way to search is to have to "remember" things around what you're searching for. Which doesn't work for people who weren't there when it was posted, or don't remember.
Oh, and I'll end with another "great" Atwood quote (I stopped reading at this point):
you can search via google as well
Unless, of course, Google hasn't/won't/can't index your site. Even here, the Google searching is terrible because it won't index. What about his "paying" customers that don't have a publicly accessible site? How is Google search supposed to help them?
Haha...and now Jeff closed the topic.
How appropriate. "I won't let them prove me wrong, CLOSE THE TOPIC!"

I was afraid I'd run out of likes before I hit the end. I can understand it not being a V1 priority right now, but it should have been on there before. But Jeff said it's not even a v1.1 priority. WTF
Sam is making noise about doing it, though. And it's not like Jeff is going to actually do anything about it either way.
-
Is that Jeff being helpful? That's confusing.
-
I can understand it not being a V1 priority right now
I can't. I know he wants to have a "hooray, we released V1" soon, but if it comes out looking kinda shitty because of a terrible search and a lot of other incomplete features and nowhere close to great performance, it tarnishes the release and the look of the product as a whole more than pushing it back to a later date and having these things cleaned up.
As I look at their search right now, I sit here and think "this isn't good enough." I don't know how Atwood thinks it is, when it is much worse than the search options on "terrible PHP forums" he claims Discourse is better than.
-
But they don't even know what they want. It should have been a priority two fucking years ago. They need to get v1 out the damn door so they can be useful and work on search.
Instead they play around with columns and colors while the forum burns.
-
it tarnishes the release and the look of the product as a whole
Even more that it already is? Inconceivable.
Filed under: I think that word does mean what I think it means.
-
Yeah, I was trying to be objective and looking at it from the perspective of someone who hasn't had to suffer it, but I walked right into that.

Sphincters for Discourse

Bah. Way too much rate limiting in Discourse already.

The responses Jeff gives in that thread are unbelievable. I can't think of any other place I've seen someone show that level of rudeness to their users. He flat out accuses them of lying and then belittles them.
Also practically everything else on the planet does search better. His excuse that it's almost impossible flys in the face of...reality. How does he maintain this level of cognitive [s]dissonance[/s] discourse.
