What ever happened to the "active people in topic"?
-
So.... recently started topics seem to be missing some pictures in the Users category:
I made little coloured dots: red → new topic, blue → old topic
Why? I dunno. Seemed like a good idea at the time. What is up with that? Was there a Discourse update that broke things? Did we dislike too much? Is that an admin-setting that changes things?

I was wondering that too. My ego is repeatedly crushed by not seeing my avatar in topics I know I have chatted in.

Crushing your ego right here and now by replying to you! (thus making my avatar the only one shown!)

You can imagine how bored I am when I'm participating in a meta topic that's bitching about discourse AND am trying to get my sweet avatar back on the list.
-
You got no idea!
It's almost one in the morning for me. And I am not even trying to get my avatar in that list. I am apparently trying to deny yours. AND I don't even have a reason for that.Filed Under: If life hands you lemons, you'd better make a metaphor about it | ← had nothing to do with my post but I am bored so...meh

I'm the same time zone, dude. I'm supposed to be finishing work I postponed yesterday for today, but I was dicking around all day. And now I'll just jerk around here for another hour until I'm too sleepy to work. Fuck!

Well, obviously, having a list of top posters is gamification and promotes unnecessary posting, so they had to remove it.

So, bumping this topic because I'd still like somethnig of an official reply
Also mentioning @PJH and @sam because I know the forum has been updated recently (as Sam said in some topic)

Pass. My last upgrade was 1130 UTC Friday, but it seems someone else has been doing it since.
I'll see if I can kick another one off since there are 11 commits waiting...
-
Done.. any change? (I'm mobile atm.)

So, just for the fun of it... exploiting the new feature for me! :snigger:

And in that thread we find Jeff saying "This is probably my #1 hated long running bug in Discourse. So annoying, and it has been happening for a year now" (emphasis mine).WTF?
Edit: reading on in that thread, it obviously took Sam less than 11 hours to fix it... why didn't they fix it a year agon?

it obviously took Sam less than 11 hours to fix it
Running a cleanup thread every 12 hours to run around adjusting stuff seems more of a hack than a fix...

They seem to see it as a fix... :-)I've seen something like that before, when a community server developed in C++ had a memory leak. Since resources were sparse and the code quality left something to be desired, instead of fixing it it was decided to just simply restart the thing every 24 hrs in the wee hours of the morning when traffic was low.

And this “fix” seems to scan the whole topic and post tables every time it runs. That’s just scalability problems waiting to happen...

Pfffft... scalability... just buy a bigger plan for your cloud!

So we should be expecting 504 issues every 12 hours then? Great ...

So business as usual now? Self-DOSing applications? Quick, Jeff could call that a feature.

I guess it wasn't really a "top" priority.

I think a self dos would qualify for patenting.

Upgrade from Self-DOS 2014 Home Edition to Self-DOS 2014 Pro Edition for better Self-DOS'ing. Act now and save $25 off the normal upgrade price of $99!

You could implement self-dos emulator really easily by implementing
while(true)
{
Thread.Sleep(1)
}The benefit is that it wakes up frequently, so it assists in dosing the rest of the computer as well. (sort of?) Might need to include a system call, just to be safe.
-
Needs to do that on all hardware threads, and malloc() all the way up to the process limit. Once malloc'd it needs to randomly write to different areas of RAM to keep the page file busy. Finally, it needs to continuously emit UDP broadcasts at line rate.
At least that's how I'd do it.

This is probably my #1 hated long running bug in Discourse. So annoying, and it has been happening for a year now.
Oh dear…
Well, if his #1 bug, that he hates, took a year to fix...how long will #2 take? v1 will take a while.
-
The whole product is pretty much #2 though.
-
at no point during your programs runtime do you print something out and put it on a wooden table? Thats what I call inefficient! Back to the drawingboard with you!
Filed Under: efficiency is where it's at in this market of self-DOSing applications!

You never know. Developers get their next tasks via the "suggested topics" algorithm, so the monkeys on the keyboards behind the suggestions might just throw the right poo against the wall...

Discocurse does everything! It is a forum software, a bug tracker, a complaint department, etc.

But can you have an argument with it?

No, it would probably storm off once it realizes you are right to go back to itsmotherfather for a couple of days and won't come back until you post a couple of dead plants.
