As for UK having a higher "crime per capita" than the US, while the statistics will show that, if you check closely you will also find that the UK statistics include misdemeanor, whereas the US statistics do not.

Bullshit.  The UK tries very hard to minimize crime stats while the US tries to maximize them.  It has to do with the fact that UK police forces want to appear competent whereas US forces want to  appear overwhelmed so they get more funding.  The fact is, your chances of being assaulted, robbed or having your home broken into and your family raped in front of you is far higher in the UK.

I love the bit where you imply that there are statistically significant numbers of breakins followed by rapes in either the UK or the US.

    US crime stats for 2006.

UK crime stats for 2006. [PDF] (Skip to page 56 for a good summary table)

The UK stats are all screwy and only include England and Wales -- Scotland has its own stats which are higher still.  They are gathered September of one year to September of the next, rather than on a per-year basis, so the fairest comparison is the 2005/2006 UK stats and the 2006 US stats.  Additionally, the UK police like to lump crimes into 3 categories: crimes against the person, crimes against property and crimes against vehicles (WTF??).  The US just uses property and violent crime.  Here's a quick summary.  All the numbers are incidence per 100,000 members of the population.

    US violent: 473.5

    US property: 3,334.5

    UK against person (violent): 1,970

    UK against property (property): 7,591

    UK against vehicles (property): 1,485

    UK overall: 10,328

That means that one in ten UK citizens will be a victim of a crime (violent or property) per year.  If you're curious, there are many other articles analyzing the massive upsurge of violent crime in the UK available on the web.  Just Google "UK crime fail" or "UK crime problem".

Close but not quite.   To be especially pedantic that means there will be (about) 1 crime per every 10 UK citizens.  This could be relevant for instance if the crime was highly localized.  Meaning that in some neighborhoods there were hundreds of people who were the victims of multiple crimes.  So what you could have is 5% of people are the victims of 1 crime and 2.5% of people are the victims of 2 crimes, making it 7.5% (or about 1 in 13) of people that were the victim of a crime.  I haven't done extremely extensive research about crime in the UK (althought I have done some relating to the security cameras they have put all over the place), but I would say this is a likely senario.

Other than that, I agree with almost everything you have said in this thread.  I think the most prescient thing you said was how, now that you have money, you have to protect your yourself from people violently seizing control of your assets.  So has it been and so will it ever be.

you get hostile and defensive and insist I'm asking for free things because I wish I could be on birth control and go to the doc when I get sick.
You can go on birth control.  You can go buy it.  You can go to the doctor.  Have your insurence pay for it or pay for it yourself.  Oh wait...  You must mean you want these things for free.  I guess that's why he says that you want free shit, because you want free shit.

That said, Morbius has stated and I agree that subsidized birth control is good.  Call your local Planned Parenthood office and talk to them.  You can probably get birth control pills for free or near free (certainly less than $20/month).   If you have sex less than 15 times a month (every other day) then you can save money by buying condoms which cost about 75 cents apeice.  If you can't afford that then might I suggest getting a job.  I worked almost full time during college making somewhere near $30,000/year.  I don't know what your major is, but I'm sure you can find something that pays decently.

Yeah, I made the "1 in 10" comment when I saw the total crimes and I didn't really think it through.  Victims in the UK are often repeatedly targeted.  I mean, if a burglar knows a young woman lives alone and that there's no way she can have a gun to protect herself, returning to rob the same place over and over again is actually a smart move.  So I definitely was mistaken on that one and apologize for any misinformation I spread.  Everything else I quoted should be accurate, though.  Thanks.
