In my inbox today was an advertisement for some part time work designing and updating a web site...
Visiting their site you find they are in fact an IT and Web Design consultant team.

You just described my "social service" for at least one semester. My "task" was originally to make a banner updateable, but nobody had the damn .fla file (the hideous thing had been done in Flash) so I ended up placing a "Current Events" link. Which linked to a plain ole .html which I had to manually update each month.
The site owners were too cheap to buy DB hosting, so I was stuck doing "the update job".

We are actually a start up company that wants to provide all the facilities listed in the website, including web design but as yet we have not recruited anyone. Our original website was built by an offshore company and now we need to improve this existing website - thus the new advert in Odesk. So there you are, a simple explanation. I hope that we have cleared up the confusion, and would always welcome comments on how to improve our business so that we can improve other businesses.

Wow, I really hope this is a joke post.
Otherwise, the best way to improve your business would be to actually bother recruiting someone rather than trying to get your branding right. Also, pay more, or you're not going to get anyone even half decent.

Under construction Then again, I would have expected a team with years of technical and management experience to be at least somewhat familiar with web best practices. How many of these 35 sins can be found on your site?

Our company charges about $150 per hour for all combined man-hours used on a project, including project manager time, designer time, and developer time, as well as meetings internal and with the client. There's also a four hour minimum for any project.
$250? A little on the cheap side. You get what you pay for.

$250 is what you pay a kid in high school who just learned PHP and has no bills to pay. Professionals are EXPENSIVE. To deal with offshore-developed web code by myself, I'd be looking for $250 a DAY (because the original was developed by kids in high school earning less than $250 for the whole job who DO have bills to pay and read the first chapter of Learn PHP in 24 hours sitting behind a culture gap where when they say "I will" they mean "I'll try") open-ended.

OK. So really the WTF is how cheap companies/employers are when posting jobs in free-lance sites. Today's listing had a dozen jobs with requirements just a silly as AltaSolve with just as low a budget. This one, though, has to take the prize...
What's next? A site like MySpace with a budget of $0.50?

I don't think they really mean that $1.00 - more likely, they don't know the price yet and want to negotiate it.

Be sure to Digg their submission as well. Although since the site is nothing but "Under Construction", I'm not sure what there is to see...

I checked their site and it says under construction. I cannot believe ppl like you spend so much time critizing. Is it that you are unhappy that off shore companies are taking the jobs. On average they are not great quality but do the job at a fraction of US rates and I suppose for small to medium companies that must be the bottom line. So, you folks, who like to criticize, you should move to India too as all the jobs is be there...

The site says that now. When I posted this originally it was not "under construction". In fact, it looks like in response to postings here they may have taken the entire site down. I'm not bashing that their site wasn't complete. What I thought interesting was the very cheap bid for work that they should have been able to do in house, since it was listed as one of their services.

On a serious not though I do find this companies ineptitude quite amusing. I've also noticed many companies are taking notice of us and reacting in different ways wether its having tdwtf in their screenshots or simply putting up an under construction message. It says they have at least read what we have to say and hopefully will be smarter about things in the future.

OMG...you boys really believe that people listen to us:)....get real. This forum is for saddos like us, who moan about everything, because we do not have any friends, well at least we have online friends:).
I have looked at similar sites and it seems that people take them up and down like a prostitute's underwear - so all I can surmise is that they are test sites and we are wasting our time on these posts - so I agree this post is dead.....shows how little importance we have:))))
