A start-up that tracks an individual’s job search activity in public social media accounts is quietly — and some would say creepily — calculating a score it says helps represent how likely each one is to be looking for a job.
The start-up, Joberate, scrapes publicly available data from millions of individual online social media accounts, or buys it from other parties, to assign what it calls a “J-Score” that estimates the level of job search activity, likening it to a FICO score.

INB4: I don't give a shit if it's allowed by their "we can do whatever we want with your data" policy. Yes, you can. Yes, I agreed to that T&C. But that's a shitty, shitty thing to do any you deserve to go bankrupt for literally selling out your user's livelihood.

I don't have a SO account, so I don't know what it looks like when logged in, but I don't believe SO would publicly display what jobs ads you've interacted with

SO Careers has a resume section that shows when you've tweaked it, and you can show your status as to whether you're actively looking or not.

To be honest, bosses just have to look at the firewall logs to see what you're doing. And that'll likely paint a much darker picture of you than whatever J-Score you might have (plus this is even less likely to be unlawful)...

With us, everyone I know that has mentioned that they have another job offer have received a raise. I think this is a great app because I can script together a job search crawler and also get a raise.

I think there are going to be some extra clauses in each job contract to demand, like "no perusing of my social media profiles whatsoever", "not using services or intelligence of any kind to monitor any afterhours activities"...

It's a good thing that my social media presence is little more than retweeting vines. I also don't do anything like
- Browsing job search websites
- Uploading / Updating CVs
on company hardware / networks.
This app would be useless for "warning" my bosses.
Having said that, I do voice my unhappiness about aspects of the job. Especially if it's something that can be fixed. But if nothing changes, then they are ignorant if it comes as a surprise when I resign.

I see it the other way... it's now possible to stir the air for a brief moment to let the boss consider a pay raise.
Btw, I think this "service" has no use on me, because up to now, I always resign and rest a little before start finding a new job. They can't possibly use that statistics to predict when will I leave a particular job.
Btw again, I do find these kind of services disturbing...

I think his point is "when you RDP home to update your CV etc. using the company's network, the company will not know ".
Btw, I think companies like DXL (the logistic company) mandates VNC servers on every workstations inside the company, and their IT occasionally remote in to see what the user is doing. (My sister happened to notice her VNC icon in notification area turned black and she know what it means)
When you RDP in full screen, you may not be able to notice the icon color change.

Which makes sense, from a purely technological point of view. But it's total overkill, you don't need such complicated, fragile, and potentially illegal (or morally reprehensible) 3rd-party tools, in 99% of cases you'll get as good, or even better, a picture from much simpler techniques (i.e. firewall logs).
But as @Gurth and @lolwhat said, a PHB would not think of the firewalls but he could be ready to pay wads of cash to an external party with a shiny website and funky name.
All in all, that might not be a bad idea. Anyone with a shred of intelligence will know how to avoid the J-score problems, and PHBs will thus either miss our real misdoings or fire the useless ones. OK, let's promote this new tool for everyone!

I assumed passive aggressively letting your boss know that you're looking for a job is how it is usually done.

Once upon a time, my employer had two kinds of days off from work: "holiday" and "vacation". As time went on and they became aware that not everyone belonged to a culture that considered certain days of the year of special significant, the holidays were replaced with "floating holidays" or "floaters", days you could take off whenever.
But you had to designate when you took a day off whether it was a holiday or vacation day, and they wanted you to tell them at the beginning of the calendar year what days you wanted off for the entire year so there wouldn't be a big empty office on say, the day after the Super Bowl.
If I wanted to take an entire week off, I'd put that in as five vacation days. And if I wanted Monday as an actual holiday (defined as a day when the banks, post office, schools and libraries were all closed) I'd take the other four days as floaters. Seemed simpler; you wouldn't want the first three days of the week in one category and the other two as something else.
Then someone stopped by and mentioned that everyone else took vacation days first until they were all used up and holidays from that point forward. Seems strange, i thought to myself, but if that's the tradition, I'll go and have the secretary recategorize the days I've put in for to be like the rest.
A couple of days later, my boss's boss stops by my desk with a worried look on his face. "I heard a rumor that you were thinking of leaving the company!" Turns out that the reason for vacation first is that if you left mid-year, the company had to reimburse you for any vacation days you had coming that you didn't take, but they didn't have to do the same for holidays. In the "minds" of management, changing what I called some of those days was a clear sign that I planned to jump ship before the end of the year.
I assured them that I had no such plans, and explained my reason for making the change, and that seemed to calm them down. But it was nice to know that the prospective of my leaving could get them in such a panicked tizzy.
In light of the OP of this thread, I kind of wish I was still there so I could plant spurious information on social media and see if I could fool them into a similar panic.

In one instance, PHB asked me if Joe was coming in, since it was much later than his normal 9:00 starting time. We told him we hadn't heard anything from him, and so PHB proceeded to phone him. Joe said that he just finished an interview, and is on his way to the office.

I'd interpret that as "Don't assign anything important to me as you don't know when I'll leave".
People keep saying they'll be leaving will not get a pay raise, only people who "previously not looking for job suddenly start looking for one" worths package reconsideration as they're retainable. For most companies there is always greener pastures outside so it won't worth the effort for those who keep looking.

The boss was caught off-guard, but there was no ill will. And Joe ended up staying for a few months longer than I did.

You hit the nail on the head. All of the instances I've seen where people openly say they're going to leave, they rarely end up leaving. Worse, they don't get good increases, and they end up being unhappy all over again.

well, the day before our SVP got shitcanned for incompetency I replied to a recruiter asking for more details on a job opening they'd hinted at and CC'd our HR department and my boss.
I like to think that my responding to the recruiter (when it was known that i was extremely unhappy with that chuckefuck's management style) lead to him being let go the next day to retain me. I know that's not what happened, but i like to pretend it is what happened.

I also know of a guy who got himself out of a really shitty outsource placement by quitting. If the company likes you enough, they'll make sure you stay :)
