"Social Engineers"

  • A while back our office put up a bunch of crappy motivational posters, warning us about security. They all had horrific art on them and were promptly removed.

     My favorite one read:

    "Beware of Social Engineers."

Hmm, I am a Software Engineers. I like to hang out and go to the bar after work. I like hanging out with the cool people from work. I feel that I am friendly and well liked around the office.

Aparently they should beware of me.

  • Indeed.

  •  "Beware of Anti-Social Engineers"

...because it's always the quiet ones you have to be the most careful of.

  •  I believe you have my stapler.

I guarantee you that while you're watching a quiet one, a noisy one will fucking kill you!

TRWTF is that you think that social engineering = software engineering.

The whooshing sound is the sound of a 21st floor window being left open. It is certianly not the sound of a joke flying over your head.

     Right.

Fyi, this is The Daily WTF, not The Daily Lame Joke. Yes, this is the side bar, but it is still expected to be WTF-related.

Because more things make us ask WTF than just code

TRWTF is that you don't realise this forum is serious business, not a big truck that you just dump things on.

  • Well, I thought it was quite funny. Though now I come to think of it, tailing a software engineer to a bar, posing as a fellow programmer from another firm and extracting information under the guise of trading work-related anecdotes would be a pretty effective social-engineering attack.

    It's a series of rubes.

Obviously, which is why he referenced the well-known "the Internet is not a truck" meme.  I always like to bust that out during business lunches, courtroom testimony and after tender, loving bondage sessions, just to let everyone know I'm serious.

    Best...  Post... Ever

  • Wouldn't that be more of a DE-motivational poster? Kind of like: Beware of bears. Or, watch out for HIV infected needles. It's kind of funny, it just says to be paranoid about something but it doesn't motivate anyone on how to prepare for it. You know like, "I know my boss told me to do this... BUT is this email really his, it could be a social engineers, oh shit." And how many non-tech personal on the grounds of really any company know what social engineering is? That's got to be a wierd poster for those people to see... "Is this some kind of joke? Is this like a mix of abstract art and comedy?"

I think you are confusing "motivational" with "informational".  "Watch out for HIV-infected needles." is plenty motivational for me.
