The Opposite - The Interview

  • Some time ago I was sending out resumes to get a job. It was pretty simple what I was looking for, a web development job with PHP, ASP, or Perl -- pretty broad, but that's how I like to keep it. I finally got a call from this guy named Brad, who told me that the company he worked for "Professional Designs, Inc." wanted to setup an interview with me.

The interview was setup for the end of the week, so I decided to spend some time getting to know a bit about the company first. On their web site they had several different things, most of which had nothing to do with web design, rather they almost all had to do with life coaching and using real-estate to make money. At first I thought I had the wrong web site, but looking at the about page told me otherwise. This was, indeed the correct company.

I found their portfolio page for web design, and the first few looked a little odd -- so I opened all 36 and took a closer look. 20 out of those 36 directly had to do with life coaching, making tons of money in the real-estate business, and various multilevel marketing scams. One important thing, though, was that on the about pages for these web sites, it had the same CEO listed as for Professional Designs, Inc.

It seemed fairly obvious to me what was going on. This company was setting up web sites with their various scams under different business names in order to get people to buy CDs, DVDs, and what not. I honestly would have canceled the interview right then, but I had an idea. There's an episode of Seinfeld where George does the opposite of himself and everything starts working well. So I thought I might try the same.

I went to the interview dressed in everyday clothes and made no real effort to look good or act like I wanted to get the job. The guy obviously was not impressed and told me that I was required to wear a suit. I replied "I just don't feel comfortable fucking people over in a suit, I'd much rather do it dressed like the average Joe."

He said nothing had was just staring at me, so I went on to talk about how I saw their web site, I know they're full of shit, and it's a shame businesses like theirs don't get burned down. He left the room after I said that, presumably to get some goons or to cry, so I left right then.

Later on that day I got a call from some woman saying I didn't get the job.

    Surprise!

  •  Sowwww....

    Did you have fun?

It was pretty cool, I have always wanted to do something like that a job interview -- the opposite of how I usually am, that is pretty nervous because I want the job.

  • Lmfao.

  • One thing I've considered doing is contacting a few of the Lottry Winner spammers with information and see how long I can string them along into thinking they're actually going to get a dime out of me.

I thought about making it a competition, each one taking a spammer and stringing them along and see who could keep one coming back the longest.

That's called scambaiting. And you usually can string them along for quite some time.

You should check out http://www.419eater.com, they do this all the time and post the emails/phone calls and so on.  Some of the stuff is pretty funny.

Wow.  All I can say is that this site is amazing.  The ridiculous stories these guys feed the scammers and the hoops they get them to jump through are insane.

  • Kudos to you, sir.  I've been in a couple bad interviews where I determined halfway through that I would never accept an offer from the company, but I never had enough balls to tell them off.  I think that'd be a fun way to kill an afternoon if I knew ahead of time that the company was a sham.

  •  Dude thats awsome! You should have walked in with a bathrobe on with pink bunny shoes and a monicle. When asked WTF? You say "I was thinking, that if I was to accept your job I must be a bit crazy, so I thought i'd dress the part"

  • This really isn't like the Sienfeld episode though. George did everything the opposite because he failed at everything in life. Whereas you did the opposite by 1) going to the interview when you normally wouldn't have 2) not conducting yourself as you normally do and failed. On the bright side you aren't Kastanza material? I'm sorry, but unless there is a junior mint, or maybe a big salad or Kramerica Industries... this isn't really related to Seinfeld.

No WTF for you. Come back one year. Next!
