The countries are ordered by their ID, a number like "536870957". For the protection of my sanity, I refuse to speculate on the details of the data model, or the lack of understanding of ORDER BY.
I can also choose "none". This is convenient because I live on the moon.

95-xxx-xxx-xxxx for US numbers, 98-(countrycode)-(number) for everywhere else.
The new system doesn't treat the US as a special case, so the dialing was just 00-(countrycode)-(number). However, many people thought that 00-1-(number) was just "the new code" for 95-(number), and just don't know that the 1 is the US country code. Oops!

It may be sorted by the country names in their respective native language - or some other language. Germany is "Deutschland" in German, so you can see it's sorted in the area where you find lots of other countries beginning with "D".
I don't understand the sorting of Sao Tome in the "D"-area though. Here's the list of spellings in different languages from Wikipedia. There's a lot of "C"s, but nothing around "D":

Reasons why that isn't immediately obvious to the vast majority of people:
- Self-Dialed long distance calls in the US and Canada are identified by starting the call with a 1. This does *not* indicate it is international. ( [url]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_conventions_for_writing_telephone_numbers#North_America[/url] )
- International calls between the US and Canada are dialed as if they are within-country long distance calls.

- It's a single digit. Most countries have a 2 or 3 digit number. The single digit probably throws people off.
I have no idea what happens if you dial 0111(area code)(phone number), or 01101(area code)(phone number) within the US. I've never tried. If someone wants to give it a go and let us know, that would be cool. I did have the odd occasion of needing to let someone know how to dial my number internationally. Because it wasn't immediately obvious at the time (think: Before the internet) I had to phone the operator. She chuckled and explained it really is just the number 1. :-)

No. Dialing in internationally to the US/Canada you do NOT use the extra 1 that is not the country code. So 1-XXX-XXX-XXXXX would become +1-XXX-XXX-XXXX not +1-1-XXX-XXX-XXXX. It's just like you don't use (say) the 0 at the start of a UK phone number when you dial +44

Actually, if you look closer, the ones that look like "C" in the list are Cyrillic S'es. Russian "Сан-Томе и Принсипи" would be "San-Tome i Prinsipi" in direct transliteration.

It's usually considered a flame when you make pointless and unfounded attacks on a country's elected president. I voted for George Bush, and given the chance to go back and revote, I would vote for him again. Politics is a sensitive subject, and you probably shouldn't make off-hand remarks without a shred of evidence or reasoning to back it up.
If you want to be part of the forum, then I encourage you to continue posting. It's always good having new members, and unlike some people on this forum, I do care when new people feel like this place is so unfriendly that they don't want to be a part of it. However, if you plan on making regular contributions of the kind you made earlier in this thread, I would be more than happy to show you to the door myself.

Agreed, 100%. And to be completely forthright, I never liked George W. Bush, I never voted for him and if given the chance again, I probably would not. However, I do not think this forum is the place for unsubstantiated, dogmatic political commentary and I do not want to see it. I know very well that it will lead to nothing but a flamewar. I don't want any new user to feel unwelcome without reason, but if this is the kind of contribution that DaEagle wishes to make we would all be better off without it.
