You can even find countries that have ceased to exist since 1993...

    Now that's user friendly !

  • The countries are ordered by their ID, a number like "536870957". For the protection of my sanity, I refuse to speculate on the details of the data model, or the lack of understanding of ORDER BY.

I can also choose "none". This is convenient because I live on the moon.

And they both have the value of 536870913 which is always good to know

    function PopulateCountryCode()

You can even find a language that is no longer spoken since the 17th century: Latin

    That's really user friendly.

  • And at the very end, after the very important-but-late-to-the-party UPPERCASE COUNTRIES, you find "None". So perhaps this form has to deal with off-worlders?

  • No problem with firefox where you can just write your country name ;-)

  • Actually, you should definately spend your next vacation in the United States of Minor Outlying Islands. Their Unseasoned Medium-Sized Jellyfish Pies alone - maybe with a pint of water beer... pure culture, I assure you... pure culture.

It's proven: north americans don't know international dialing codes.

how does that prove anything?  If anything all it proves is that the company expected there to be some people that would not understand what to put there and that enough of those people would be in Canada or the United States to warrent putting that there.  Also, it seems reasonable that someone in the US or Canada might not know why numbers have a 1 in front of them because 1 is such a non-interesting number.  If it was 58-900-hot-asss, they might bother asking "why 58?"

Heh, most mexicans don't know our country code is 52. Then again, they might dial US numbers every now and then, and still don't know that the US country code is 1. Its more of a historical thing, as before 1997, dialing the US and dialing (any other country) was done differently:

95-xxx-xxx-xxxx for US numbers, 98-(countrycode)-(number) for everywhere else.

The new system doesn't treat the US as a special case, so the dialing was just 00-(countrycode)-(number). However, many people thought that 00-1-(number) was just "the new code" for 95-(number), and just don't know that the 1 is the US country code. Oops!

  •  It's Serena.... makers of the god-awful Collage software. You expected something sane?

  •  It may be sorted by the country names in their respective native language - or some other language. Germany is "Deutschland" in German, so you can see it's sorted in the area where you find lots of other countries beginning with "D".

I don't understand the sorting of Sao Tome in the "D"-area though. Here's the list of spellings in different languages from Wikipedia. There's a lot of "C"s, but nothing around "D":

Yeah, that point is true.  Also, I failed to catch the sarcasm because anti-Americanism is rampant on the internet and on this forum from time to time.

That sounds about right. You take a map of the world and start at South Africa, then draw a line West to Cambodia and you can't really miss Brazil!

  • @Zecc said:

for US and Canada enter 1 for country

Reasons why that isn't immediately obvious to the vast majority of people:

     - Self-Dialed long distance calls in the US and Canada are identified by starting the call with a 1.  This does *not* indicate it is international. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_conventions_for_writing_telephone_numbers#North_America )

     - International calls between the US and Canada are dialed as if they are within-country long distance calls.

     - Most international calling in the US and Canada is between the two countries.  I would say this is more true for Canada than the US.

     - Very few (no?) places in the US and Canada start their number with "+", which would indicate that the following digit group is the country code, the "+" meaning the access code ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone_numbering_plan. ).  If they did, their numbers would be +1-1-XXX-NNNN

     - It's a single digit.  Most countries have a 2 or 3 digit number.  The single digit probably throws people off.

I have no idea what happens if you dial 0111(area code)(phone number), or 01101(area code)(phone number) within the US.  I've never tried.  If someone wants to give it a go and let us know, that would be cool.  I did have the odd occasion of needing to let someone know how to dial my number internationally.  Because it wasn't immediately obvious at the time (think:  Before the internet) I had to phone the operator.  She chuckled and explained it really is just the number 1.  :-)

No. Dialing in internationally to the US/Canada you do NOT use the extra 1 that is not the country code. So 1-XXX-XXX-XXXXX would become +1-XXX-XXX-XXXX not +1-1-XXX-XXX-XXXX. It's just like you don't use (say) the 0 at the start of a UK phone number when you dial +44

Actually, if you look closer, the ones that look like "C" in the list are Cyrillic S'es. Russian "Сан-Томе и Принсипи" would be "San-Tome i Prinsipi" in direct transliteration.

It's about time people like morbius get over their superiority complex. Just how old are you? Because you act like you're about 5.

Now, this post will probably be taken as just another flame, fair enough. I'd like to think it might be taken as a wake up call, but somehow I doubt it. Anyway, thanks for making TDWTF a great site with the most unwelcoming forum on the net.

It's usually considered a flame when you make pointless and unfounded attacks on a country's elected president.  I voted for George Bush, and given the chance to go back and revote, I would vote for him again.  Politics is a sensitive subject, and you probably shouldn't make off-hand remarks without a shred of evidence or reasoning to back it up.

If you want to be part of the forum, then I encourage you to continue posting.  It's always good having new members, and unlike some people on this forum, I do care when new people feel like this place is so unfriendly that they don't want to be a part of it.  However, if you plan on making regular contributions of the kind you made earlier in this thread, I would be more than happy to show you to the door myself.

Agreed, 100%.  And to be completely forthright, I never liked George W. Bush, I never voted for him and if given the chance again, I probably would not.  However, I do not think this forum is the place for unsubstantiated, dogmatic political commentary and I do not want to see it.  I know very well that it will lead to nothing but a flamewar.  I don't want any new user to feel unwelcome without reason, but if this is the kind of contribution that DaEagle wishes to make we would all be better off without it.
