Ben,
The argument is that if you are ignoring the parent category any newly created sub-category should be set to ignore too. I had the same issue with the new category. It took me two threads to conclude I needed to go to the categories page enter two new categories and set them to ignore manually. This took more time on mobile then posting this.

To be perfectly fair here, I ignored a category and it shows up in my default view. The one I get when I click the -image at the topic... I don't really need a "this one topic needs to disappear forever"-option, but I don't understand why igoring a category would only hide that category in a random view of the forum... if that makes sense.

I think the ignore functionality was specifically made when we came on in response to outcries of woe about notifications and /unread. It's easy to assume that nobody stopped to think if it should apply elsewhere.

it didn't do anything on discourse either, you could ne mentioned summoned to a thread in an ignored category.

also while ignored categories disappeared from /recent and /unread muted(ignored) threads only disappeared from unread, leaving them visible in /recet still... a vexing situation that i would hae prefered being reversed

I like that threads I'm ignoring show up in recent, because I use unread as my primary view, and I like having a way to go back to a thread I ignored if I change my mind. Otherwise I have to find it in the category structure and that sucks.

now that i remembered that i can set my own home screen (it's under settings in the avatar menu) i'm officially "meh" on ignored topics showing up in /unread
