Linux in public

  • Okay, so this is one on the rare^w Linux-in-public-photos. I post this with the best regards to the Deutsche Telekom. Found this on the - actually, I don't know what the intended usage is - let's call it "adversiting-screen" of a phone booth (as it's advertised by the DT - normally it's called "Telefon-Stängel").

  •  Wow. Someone using Linux!

  • Your phones have advertisements? Like paid product placements? What the hell is the world coming to?

  • Oh, right. I mentioned the word "Linux". In the spirit of the Olympic Games: May the games begin!

Here in the UK, more and more of our ATMs are getting advertising too - not just for products offered by the bank that owns it (that's common), I've also seen "real" adverts on them too (ie for completely unrelated products)

Truly a wonder of the modern world...

  • TRWTF is public telephones.  Most public telephones in the US are being disposed of as quickly as the telcos can rip them out.  I've had my own cell phone for a long, long time.  Then again, I don't live in an impoverished European country.

I had a cell phone for 12 years but I still use public payphones every now and then. for example when my battery is drained. You rarely need them but when you need them they are very useful.

  • You could also think of tourists who don't want to pay for roaming.

Oh, sorry, I don't live in a hellhole country where people are being mugged all the time and where citizens can't carry concealed firearms to fend off muggers.

    @pscs said:

In the extremely rare case that this would happen, I suppose I would borrow a friend's cell or ask to use a courtesy phone.

What are you going to do when you get the HIV from putting a public telephone receiver against your face?

Those phones are like a condom: better to have one and not need it, than need one and not have it. Plus, I'd like to know if  $2.50/minute is something only poor people can't afford. Because that's the roaming rate in the US.

You must have a sucky cell plan.  Still, $2.50 a minute isn't unaffordable.  It's not like you're going to be chatting with people for hours on end.

That's what US carriers charge to non-US carriers, some may have lower charges but the best I've seen is $2/minute, still high. In-country roaming, I understand, is either very cheap or nonexistant in the US. But I think the "expensive roaming" argument was about the international rates.

That's about the same as "Stängel" means in German too. I haven't heard of "Telefon-Stängel" before, though.

  • Public phones never work or they steal your change, and smell funny, so what's the point on having nonworking crap all around?
    Roaming prices?

Fuck it, you are either on vacation: so send them a postcard or find a coffee shop and send em an email.

Or you are on a business trip: so let the company pay the bills. If you are your own company and can't pay roaming, then you shouldn't be making business abroad in the first place.

Also, you can always use the hotel phone, unless of course you are backpacking in cheap eastern europe hostals, which makes you a stoned hippy who doesn't care about calling mommy or whoever.

Maybe just keep a couple of those public phones on airports and hospitals, for emergencies or something...

    BTW Linux sux!

Coins? Change? I haven't used coins for public phones since... well... 1994 or something like that. Telmex payphones use pre-paid "smartcards" since then.

And if I'm in the US, there's 1-800-COLLECT or similar services. Or the 1-800 prepaid card services. Whatever.

Yeah well, any country with high inflation rates will better be using prepaid cards. But Spain is still using coins on lots of their payphones (up til 2007 at least), and I guess a lot of other non US and Mexico countries are using them too.

Also If I have to point out that I wasn't being serious, well... mmm.. whatever you just ruined my fun.

I've never seen a smartcard reader on a payphone in the US, just change slots.  That's because nobody in the US is investing new money in a dead technology like payphones.

Why would that be ironic or trolling?  See, when the voices in your head shout things the rest of us cannot hear them so you have to put it into words on the computer screen so we can have some clue as to what you are going on about.

Anyway, I meant every word of it.  If your concern is mugging I would think avoiding bad neighborhoods, having a competent police force and -- above all -- carrying a firearm would be your top priorities.  For me, losing my cell phone is about the last thing I'm going to worry about.  Hell, I can buy a new cell phone the same day but if I'm carrying a few hundred in cash that is gone for good.

Additionally, if I ever find myself without a phone I know I can always find someone with a cell phone or courtesy phone, so payphones are a non-issue there as well.  I was joking about HIV, but you can get some nasty illnesses from a public telephone.  Personally, I detest walking on the same ground as some of you disgusting bastards (you know who you are), but there is no way in hell I'm going to put my face on something your face touched.  Add to it the fact that only poor people or the homeless use payphones in the US and that means the phones are likely to be even more disgusting.

BTW a few hours ago there was still the same error.. may be, I should give them a hint...

Hum, I think that in Germany most phones accept cards and coins, but I can't really tell because I never use them.. I've got a cell;)

  • You're all missing the real point of public phones: to make crank calls that can't be easily traced back to you!

Clearly morbiuswilters wasn't talking about economic poverty. He was talking about the poor in spirit. He was talking about the fact that us, Europeans have lost our most valuable financial asset long time ago: Jesus.

  • @morbiuswilters said:

Well, that's a rhetoric question, because you can't get HIV from putting the receiver against your face. You may not live in a "hellhole country where people are being mugged all the time", but you definitely seem to live in a country where people know nothing about HIV and how you may get it. The only way you COULD get HIV is if someone jerked on it and you shoved it up your ass (which, guessing from your recent postings, actually seems like an option you'd consider...).

    @morbiuswilters said:

Regardless, I don't have to consort with the poor people and my country isn't installing devices that attract the riff-raff, such as payphones.

But you can still get HIV!  The chances may be lower, but you know at least one person with HIV has used one of your public telephones and they probably coughed all over it!

Why would I need to know anything about HIV?  I'm not poor and I don't consort with those that have HIV and I don't use public telephones or restrooms (for number 2), so I'm perfectly safe.  I also don't know how to make a stew of potatoes and dog meat cooked in a tin can over a tire fire -- there are just some things that those who don't live in abject poverty don't have to know.

Wouldn't being poor make me less good?  I'm not following your reasoning here.  However, I am no troll, I just suppose we come from different places and have different perspectives on life.  It's really quite wonderful that the Internet allows us to share our experiences and understand each other better, all while allowing us to avoid interchange of air and germs and smells.  Excelsior!

  • Yes, these advertising displays run Mozilla (or Netscape) on Linux and show Telekom Flash ads, prefix codes and a newsticker in semi-fullscreen. You still can see a tiny gray strip with an arrow at the top from the folded navigation bar.

And payphones are usefull IMO, calling cards aren't however. The Telekom started to replace card-only phones with coin-operated ones a couple of years ago because nobody bought cards anymore.

This sounds like more propaganda cooked up by Big Pharma just to sell more HIV cures.  "Oh, no, sharing a soda with a friend who has HIV is perfectly safe!  HIV isn't transmitted through saliva, silly, so give grandma a big, sloppy kiss!  And, hey, if you just happen to find yourself taking ill in a few months, we've got a pill that will get rid of that HIV lickety-split!"
