StackOverflow data guy performs analysis on Trump's tweets to test theory
-
A data analyst from StackOverflow decided to do some investigation based off the theory in this tweet
https://twitter.com/tvaziri/status/762005541388378112?ref_src=twsrc^tfw
It turns out, the theory appears to be correct.
I'm just surprised that Trump uses an Android phone.
-
I've not used Twitter. How can I tell whether a tweet is sent by iPhone or Android? Will it be different on WinPhone Twitter App too?
-
@cheong yes. Every tweet has metadata including which app it was sent from so you can even tell which third party Android app was used if not the official one
-
You could probably do a similar analysis for other candidates in large scale elections, but in this case it is particularly easy because of the differences in creating-client use that make it easy to tell them apart. That there is an official staffer (or several) doing this isn't surprising at all, but the correlated differences of tone are quite interesting. The (meta-)data tells the story as it is.
Also, does the staffer work in a different timezone? The evidence isn't conclusive, but it does look quite possible.

The staffer probably is stationary while Trump travels. This would make them often in different timezones.

But then you'd see more smearing in the timing data for the Android client and a sharper profile in the iPhone client. Instead, there's two largely-distinct populations; they're doing things at different times of day.
Hmm, looking at that again I'd guess that my hypothesis is wrong. Yes, there's distinct populations but they're more consistent with Trump personally doing tweeting as an out-of-hours activity, probably mostly over breakfast (and other pre-work activities).
-
@dkf Yeah, the staffer probably starts damage control at 7, while Trump tweets over breakfast

How do you know it's not the other way around? Perhaps Trump is the benign, nice guy in this story while his staff wants to paint him as an insane monster.

Sorry, that's what I was trying to imply.

All this is predicated on the assumption that @TheRealDonaldTrump is in fact the real Donald Trump, which is almost certainly not the case. All this shows is that it is likely that two different people are posting to the feed, it says nothing about who those people are.
Has Trump actually said on camera that that is his official Twitter account, and if so, is there any evidence that he has ever accessed it himself?
-
@ScholRLEA @realDonaldTrump is his verified Twitter account that was checked by twitter
-
In that case he is a bigger idiot than I thought, though apparently all the candidates made the same mistake (i.e, going anywhere near social media, either personally or through their staff) so it just proves my assertion that we need an IQ test as a requirement for public office.

High intelligence β common sense

The image in the OP? It's cropped weirdly, but it includes a HUGE ARROW pointing to where Twitter tells you what device it was posted from.

So you're saying that candidates running for office should be able to use every media (including awful TV commercials showing their opponents killing orphans) except social media sites?
Can you back that up with any kind of rational thought process?
-
@blakeyrat I'm saying that for a politician (or any other public figure), doing anything in the public eye that isn't completely controlled, planned, and scrutinized by flaks days in advance is suicidal, and should be avoided in anything other than an emergency.
-
@ScholRLEA Ok so you want Disneyland animatronics as politicians.
-
@blakeyrat That would be an improvement here

What, did you think he likes Blackberry, like Hillary?

Find the right iron-stomached person and it's probably a fun job. Half the people here would probably love it, if they could get over their anti-Trumpism.
-
@blakeyrat said in StackOverflow data guy performs analysis on Trump's tweets to test theory:

I had to click through to Twitter, and then click the image again, to be able to see it. I don't see it here in the oneboxed version.

Right. And that's why Trump's polling at 3%.

Hell--if @blakeyrat, for example, took the job of running Trump's account, who'd ever be able to tell the difference?
-
@FrostCat I would notice when Trump started saying obamacare is all opensourcey or something
-
-
@groo he can already do that from his own account. Trump's got a different set of subjects to whaargarbl about that Blakey'd have to follow.
-
You forgot the verified checkmark.
-
@FrostCat Also, it's probably funnier with the tweet I used, because it had more likes.

What does it say about me, then, that I have a Priv--a Blackberry phone running Android?
-
@masonwheeler Probably that you're either a hipster, a dummy, or both. Might even be worse than that.
-
@blakeyrat said in StackOverflow data guy performs analysis on Trump's tweets to test theory:

To say it mildly. There are two pictures in the onebox, cropped not to show the relevant part. Click on the onebox and you're taken to Twitter, when the same pictures are shown, cropped exactly the same. Then click on one of those pictures and finally see the full image.
At no point do you get any indication the picture is larger than what is shown. Honestly I've been staring at those cropped pics for a while and it never occurred to me they're cropped - I thought I was supposed to look for some tiny icon or something.
Who the hell does Twitter's UI?

Raging morons, just like you'd expect.
-
@FrostCat Oooh, cranky. I knew I shoulda put a smiley there.
@masonwheeler I was just kidding. Sorry if I offended you.

A bunch of Twits, obviously.

It's because Twitter decided to hide some important UI for no reason. I think this was hyperlinks. So I'd see:
@someassholeontwitter OMG this is amazing
And I'd be
Then I used element inspector and saw
@someassholeontwitter OMG this is amazing
http://example.com/somethingamazing
Which explained why so many tweets made literally no sense, because half of the content was being hidden.
Fucking monkeypoop twitter.
-
@Lorne-Kates this is because they're trialling one-boxing of links but they don't do it consistently or anything.
