20 mins...

  • I was running ICT Disaster Recovery for my organization and one of our tasks were to educate key stakeholders on the importance of uptime of key ICT components. So here I was summoned by the CEO of this plant that churns out a gazillion dollars worth of fuel products for a presentation. It's my 15th presentation so I figure that I'm an old hand at it.

This CEO is old school and he wants to have the presentation done during his "Management Commitee" update with the rest of the General Managers. So I arrived on time. 9am sharp, (this was after 40 min cab ride to the airport, an hour plane ride, and another 2 hours to get to the plant)

Yet, I was ready to go... but 30 mins later was told that my slot was moved back for more pressing matters. One of the systems went down and they needed to find the root cause, so I had my aha moment there.

One hour passed, another hour, and lo and behold they moved it after lunch. (Oh, I forgot to tell you guys that MC updates can last the whole day)

I was pretty pissed off by then but kept my cool when its my turn at 430pm. Explained the importance of Business Impact Analysis to identify crucial ICT dependencies to business outcome, the legalities of not being able to deliver your product to customers in the event of system downtime...

20 mins down the presentation and after all that travelling, waiting, the CEO looks at me, looks around the board room and exclaimed.

"Oh my Plant does not need ICT to run, you may go now."

Till this day, I still haven't figured out why I was summoned in the first place.

  • Garbage Person

     TRWTF is calling it "ICT"

  •  So this plant runs on buffalos turning large wheels?

  • No, they use Waterwheels 95.

  •  Reminds me of an old boss of mine, who flew from the UK to Malaysia for a meeting, which was cancelled. So he came home again.

  • What, you expected him to stay there indefinitely in case they rescheduled it?

Just last month I was in London, from NYC, for a meeting which ended up being cancelled. Fortunately it was the last stop of a week-long European tour, so it just meant that I could fly home earlier.

  • wonder whether its worth doing business with these people having to go through all that crap.

    Linebreaks restored.

  • So you're there to talk about the importance of Disaster Recovery strategies. Then they waste the next 7½ hours dealing with ... disaster recovery. Then the CEO tells you he doesn't need to hear about ways to mitigate risk and improve disaster recovery.

Sounds like they have everything already figured out.
