There are international treaties about shit like that.

Be careful, I'm pretty sure that's considered an illegal chemical weapon. If George W. was still in the White House, he would be considering invading your university now.

Which given that I was talking about home and I don't live close to work… sounds about right for that adminstration.

Give the guy some credit: At least he managed to blame and invade a neighbor of the country where the actual support for Al-Qaida came from. That's a pretty great accomplishment for someone whose intellectual horizon ends at his doorstep.
-
@asdf I don't think he was so much stupid as given the mushroom treatment - he didn't look past his front doorstep himself, and his handlers were free to tell him whatever bullshit they liked as long as it kept him too occupied to notice that he was in effect playing dress-up rather than running the country.
The real problem is that Shrub actually thought that president does run the country, which is nonsense both de jure and de facto. Embalmer is almost as bad in that belief, but at least he learns from his mistakes from time to time.
Worse, both Hilarity and Dump seem to think the same thing. I can understand why Teh Don might think so, given that he has less experience in politics than most infants, but Shillary has seen up close and personal how few real choices the guys at the top actually have, and still thinks this, which is just bizarre to me.

Maybe she just wants a vacation after her stint as Secretary of State

The President has minimal actual power these days, but in this media focused world, done well, they can dictate the tone of public discussion.
The Bush administration was fantastic at it. Obama is strictly reactive and not nearly talkative enough.
Elect me and I'll sit my ass on TV and Radio every fucking day and talk facts openly and honestly.
-
@Weng ... How is this in the cooking thread? Jeffing needed.

@translator, attend!
Also, Yes.
-
@ScholRLEA WHAT THE FUCK DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH COOKING!?
-
Nothing. Topic drift is a thing.
Confession time: I wasn't even paying attention to which thread it was, and didn't notice I was off-topic when I replied. So I definitely fucked up with that.

If you instead give out awesome recipes, you'll be both more popular in the job of President and more on topic for this thread… :p

The last 7.5 years suggests that people will still blame him for stuff that's happening now.

As if the Republican attitude to Obama is any different. Obama is the scapegoat for everything, no matter whether he is actually responsible.
BTW: I didn't blame George W. for the current situation in Iraq in the post you replied to, only your shoulder aliens did.
-
@asdf Yeah, the difference is who's actually President right now.
-
WHAT THE FUCK DOES ANY OF THIS HAVE TO DO WITH NOT COOKING?
THIS TOPIC IS FOR DISCUSSING THINGS YOU EAT RAW OR FROZEN FOOD
-
@groo If Bill was still prez, you could have eating of “raw meat” being on-topic…

Christ I know people are calling her a witch but no one has said anything about cannibalism yet!

@boomzilla I'm willing to admit that my lifestyle has change substantially and that I no longer devote the same amount of time to politics - it's entirely possible it's all in my perception - but it doesn't seem like Obama does much in the way of "here's what we should do about it" commentary.

@Weng I think he's changed styles a bit over the years. I attribute that to not having a Congress who will do the work for him and that he's not really a details kind of guy, so fighting a resisting Congress or whatever is just too much work.
However, I still think he has more aggressive surrogates who are actively working to shape "the narrative." There was a lot of criticism from the right during W's term about him (and his administration, not just personally) going out and countering or trying to shape the discussion.
But maybe it always looks like that when you more or less support / oppose.
-
I see the president's role as having more or less two sides:
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the executive portion of the government.
- Provide a check on the power of Congress and the Courts
Court power is checked by adjusting enforcement, an executive duty.
Congressional power is checked primarily by veto - but that isn't enough to overcome the ability for Congress to operate in an echochamber or act simply out of inertia. To counter those, you have to go to the media and scream about things for awhile.

What's the witch got to do with it? He has interns for that.
-
@Weng The president is also C-in-C, no matter how much Congress thinks they should have active control over everything.
-
@dkf Yes, the military is part of the executive branch and falls under #1.

Shows how much you know, wingnut. Bushitler controlled the press by doing things they didn't like, forcing them to pontificate endlessly about them.
