:fire: SQL: sequel or ess-kew-ehl?

So, there is only one way to pronounce it correctly, but how do you pronounce it?
filed under: yup, I'm bored at work
-
Squirrel
-
Squall
-
I've always just said the letters.
-
@dkf Same.
-
(not really - individual letters)
-
Sequel.
-
For my non answer, it depends on the context. Sequel server, but my ess cue ell. Just the language is sequel, but Mongo is no ess queue elle
-
Sequel.
The point was driven home to me when a client emailed us asking if "the sequel services are down"
-
On the very first Microsoft event I visited (back in 2005, something about Mobile yadda yadda) it took me like 20 minutes or so to realize that the guy was not talking about some new product, but good old SQL server.
"Sequel" seems to be the standardized way to say it for MS employees. Everybody else I know (here in Germany) just says the letters.

there is only one way to pronounce it correctly,
eeh.... technically?
look, i don't care about the correctness of the pronunciation so long as everyone in the room understands me without having to go "wait, what?"
if that means pronouncing it as
S-Q-L
then fine, if that means pronouncing it likesquirrel
that's cool, if that means pronouncing it likePh'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn
then that's how i';m gonna pronounce it.
-
Es-cue-ell most of the time, but variously sequel, squirrel, squeal depending on how annoyed I am.
-
I used to be "S-Q-L" but my coworkers cured me and it's now "Sequel".

Structured Query Language. Acronyms are a gateway drug to homophones!
I don't think I've ever needed to say it aloud, but three-letter formations are usually treated as initialisms, and pronounced separately.

so you enter your P I N in the cash machine?
-
@kt_ I usually use the preferred pronunciation of the person I'm talking to.
-
@Jaloopa Hence the 'usually' :)

Well, the acronym came after the name was decided upon, so… and the acronym was chosen because of copyright issues, so…

Honestly, that was unexpected. Never thought you'd be the conformist. :D

Oh, I'm definitely a stubborn dickhead. I've just learned that people are more likely to agree with you on the important stuff if you agree with them on stuff that doesn't matter. I choose my battles wisely.

How do you pronounce DOM?
(yes, yes, "usually")
-

How do you pronounce DOM?
"yes mistress!
oh
wait...
$SAFEWORD
"
-
@Zecc Like the start of Dominic. Mainly because it forms such a well known and easily pronounced syllable.
I would say that very few people outside of the tech world would try to pronounce SQL as sequel.

Yeah, and that's great! Screw those noobs! That's the whole point of having an internal/professional nomenclature!

I talked to a few people in the DACH area who said "Sequel". They do seem to be a minority, though.
-
The letters when mentioning it in passing, "shit" when recalling working with it and "no" when asked to work with it.
-
@Onyx and yet you work with PHP and Asterisk?
-
@Jaloopa There are limits even to my masochism.
-
Sequel when specifically referring to Microsoft SQL Server or the T-SQL dialect.
S-Q-L when referring to the standard or other implementations.
This distinction is allegedly a thing the vendor intended.
Also, Squeal or Squirrel when I need to be a jerk.
-
Another vote for Sequel. People kept looking at me funny when I said it S-Q-L.
-
@Cursorkeys Sequel is just easier to say and flows better in conversation.
-
@Zecc said in SQL: sequel or ess-kew-ehl?:
DOM
that's easy ... dom ... like the Dutch for 'stupid' ...
-
I pronounce it Raymond Luxury Yacht.
-
I'll allow it when it's not an everyday thing to you (e.g. the lay-person).
But I will definitely raise my eyebrow if you're a developer saying S-Q-L...
-
Oh jeez. I say it 'skwul'.
Well, it's uneven. Postgres -Q-L, but my-skwul or my-s-q-l, never my-sequel because that's a pair of english words already.
"MongoDB is noskwul"
-
It is an initialism and not an acronym. So you say the letters individually.
-
@AyGeePlus I say "Postgres Object Relational Database Management System".
-
@Jaloopa My first "professional" job, we got the whole company saying Squirrel.
Sigh.
That job was awesome.
-
@blakeyrat I used to say that for jokes as a Student, my manager in my placement year was less than impressed when I suggested he say that instead ... so I stopped doing it.

You have the logic backwards. You say the letters, so it's an initialism for you. If you said sequel it would be an acronym
-
@Jaloopa No because the letters stand for Standard Query Language and it is shorted to SQL.
-
@lucas1 which is pronounced sequel
-
@Jaloopa No, because it is an initialism :D
-
@lucas1 but it's also an acronym.
I say N A S A, therefore the North American Space Agency has no acronym
-
@Jaloopa Thus the smiley. Shall we have a debate between "C-sharp" and "C-pound" ...
-
I pronounce it "sequel," but I have heard people (in all seriousness) calling it "squirrel" and also "skull" before.
-
@masonwheeler SKULL!! WTF.
-

Bullshit. They thought of the name sequel, they wanted to name it that way but because of trademark stuff they couldn't, so they settled on this stupid acronym name with the intention for it to be pronounced sequel.
-
@kt_ at the same time, I know that some products are using the ess-kew-ehl way, like MySQL or SQLite
-
@kt_ Don't care. It is from America and thus being from America they don't understand how to speak proper English, so I am right as I am English.
