An Upgrade to Microsoft...

  • My wife went to our local bank today... Citi bank... which just had an "upgrade" of their ATM machines. Their machines were ALWAYS running, I never once even seen a technical issue.

So... back to my wife... she starts using one of the ATMs when lo and behold, windows on which the new ATM runs on crashes...

  • I like Microsoft-bashing as much as the next guy, but what kind of upgrade was it?

Could have been an application or hardware upgrade. And since they "just had it", they may not have had the time yet to fix the bugs that have just come to light.

  •  Says more about the banks own QA procedures than any Microsoft upgrade tbh. The primary reason why banks are so slow to upgrade it because their systems need to be as stable and heavily tested as possible.

Many ATMs I've seen are still running NT 4

Actually most cash machines in Europe run OS/2.

My father-in-law works with ATMs here in the US and most here still use OS/2 as well.

But Seamus hasn't been to England so he hasn't seen any of those.  The ones I have seen here in the USA usually run on some version of windows, usually an older one.

And actually many cash machines on Mars run on candy so you are both wrong.

  • OMG a program crashed!!!  They should all switch to Linux where this would never happen!!!!!11one

I did some contract work for Bank of Montreal and they had a ton of OS/2 systems all over the place. The lead programmer for the software that runs (or ran?) their debit card pinpads worked exclusively with OS/2 and he was unable to imagine why anybody would want to use anything else for any reason. This was in 2000.

That place wasn't a stranger to WTFs. Getting into and walking around the building was extremely difficult because of all the odd security contraptions (door sensors to prevent two people going through on one card swipe, gateways that looked like they belong in a prison, floor footstep sensors, etc) but in the basement the shipping people always left the bay door wide open facing the road.

Well I have, plenty of times, but while there I haven't seen an ATM crash or otherwise seen anything but the ATM UI. Here at home (Ireland) I've seen an NT 4 "Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to log in" prompt a couple of times.

    M&Ms and Snickers, I presume...
