Web-based Elevator Management
-
If you were building a system that controls elevators - allowing you to stop them, start them, shut off floors and set off alarms - where would you put it? On the web of course!
As the marketing spiel puts it, The EMS Panorama system for Otis elevators "is web-based, allowing users to access it from virtually any location".
http://www.otis.com/site/us/Pages/EMSPanorama.aspxOne could argue that good design, careful testing and competent system administration should reduce the risk of hackers turning your liftwells into skyscraper-sized games of Connect Four. But when the minimum system requirements state that 'Internet Explorer 6.1' is required - even though there never was a version 6.1 of IE - I'm not getting my hopes up.

Nice - Elevator Action for real ....

Now all we need to do is get Windows running in that Elevator Action machine and you're set...

Maybe they mean IE6 Service Pack 1? Still wrong ofcourse, but I've also seen the XP SP2 IE version reffered to as "IE 6.2"

That's almost as bad as one of my friends' new washer and dryer with web interfaces...

Nice. Saves you the hassle of actually playing around with the control panel.

And here I thought web-controlled lights were stupid...
But then again, given the behavior of most elevators, having a random script kiddie play with it from the internet can only be an improvement.
