Ban doesn't work
-
This account was banned when it was created, 17 days ago. ?
-
@fbmac3 I'm kind of impressed that you're literally the only person who's noticed. And we've had... how many spammers (actual spammers) come, post spam, get banned, and just quit trying on that account?
-
@anotherusername @end is, luckily, still securely contained.
-
@anotherusername Drink Coke :-)
Spammers don't do much effort on their spamming
-
Remind me in seven years to necro this thread & delete my post. Thanks.
-
@Sumireko Deleting reverts the necro, you have to wait for someone to complain first

No, you'll see @fbmac918 in 2023.

Reproduced here, the banhammer is made of styrofoam. I'm seriously disappointed, banning is the most important functionality in any civilized forum.
You're doing it wrong.

@ben_lubar well, at least it's in beta.

Frankly, I'm just surprised that nobody else had this problem before us.

Nobody else had users they wanted to permaban before?
-
@ben_lubar I have an empty phpbb forum running around. Spammers will spam, I'll delete the post, and they won't reuse the same account. These spam bots are very simple programs.
-
@Tsaukpaetra or if they did, the users left after being permabanned before the update that added temp banning
-
@ben_lubar Permanent bans should not exist. Maximum length should be 99 years, and if you're still around after that, fuck it, you deserve your account back.
-

I've found that a better idea is to have a "rolling ban". Create fixed list of one hundred or so, so that when the one hundred and first user is banned, it unbans the first. Of course, spammers would just get a normal ban. Rolling bans, at the very least, offer the chance for people to reintegrate if they desire to do so.
-
@Sumireko wouldn't that mean people are punished for not having other people annoy the admins after they're banned?

That's probably going to become a problem once gene therapy and synthetically-grown organs become affordable and reliable (which may happen in our lifetimes).

Flying cars have been legal for quite a while. They're called "helicopters."

I'd like to see you drive a helicopter on the freeway...
-
@Groaner How often do you go back to forums you stopped participating on 5 years ago? 10? 20? I'm not sure increased life expectancy will increase attention span.
-
@Tsaukpaetra that would be dumb. The whole point of a flying car is that you don't drive it on the freeway.

No, the whole point of a flying car is that you can fly when it's convenient not to be stuck in traffic. Otherwise, everyone and their dog would have gotten helicopters by now!

What happens when everyone flies to avoid getting stuck in traffic?

Pokemon Go.

Implying that it sometimes is convenient to be stuck in traffic?
Otherwise, everyone and their dog would have gotten helicopters by now!
That had nothing to do with the reason everyone and their dog doesn't have helicopters by now.

Yes, when playing Pokemon Go.

About six years ago or so, I was engaging in pain and suffering by playing League of Legends. In my defense, there was a pretty lady involved, although she was also batshit crazy. This particular lady liked to cause lots of trouble, and had (not surprisingly) gotten her account banned multiple times such that it would be unbanned in the 2050's or something, which she took as a point of pride. Granted, her typical response was to register a new account...

Yeah, there's no possible way that the skills and procedures required are beyond the capacities of the Average Joe/sephina, or that the operating costs are way out of his/her budget.

Awe come on, I see average joes piloting helicopters all the time! All you do is flip all the switches and wobble a joystick!

There's a lot of cool stuff currently being developed by various cutting-edge science-related organizations.

@Groaner The logistics of having several hundred thousand tiny helicopters flying around a small, densely populated area without any of them crashing into each other would be.... pretty interesting to see.
But hey, that's actually the one problem we have almost solved. We already have UAV, so it's just a matter of making them reliable enough and adding a central computer coordinating all the machines.
Now all we need is
- Super cheap, compact, and lightweight energy storage
- A way to manufacture millions of complex machines at very low costs with ridiculously tiny failure rates.

One of my friends is also quite optimistic on such matters. He likes to point out how if you look at natural history (and the 20th and 21st centuries as a microcosm), "progress" is a relatively exponential function of time. According to him, we are on the cusp of a nationwide solar electric grid, and while I agree with him on the merits of solar, I point out that without fair weather, solar power will not insolate the public from high energy costs. Additionally, with the best places for solar being in remote desert, any plan that proposes to transmit such power over such long distances will be met with great resistance. To which he says, "Ha! Classic @Groaner!"

What about a hybrid car-plane? Several people have made prototypes that were intended for sale.
I think there's still even a few of 'em around, although they're probably all hangar queens.

It would be cool if this could be accomplished. Airliners still put warm bodies in the cockpit "just in case," and while it's very unusual that they need to intervene, when they do, the story typically turns into one of heroism and/or tragedy.
Now all we need is

The first one is a tricky point for Tesla's latest fad of challenging hypercars to a 1/4 mile race. With their all-wheel drive instant peak torque but heavy weight, they're very good at being quick, but not fast*.
For the second point, we already do this with less complex machines, so it would seem to just be an engineering problem that requires a few iterations to perfect.
*For the uninitiated, in drag racing, quick = low elapsed time, fast = high trap speed at the end.

Seriously! How is that possible. Unit tests might be for hipsters, but did they hit F5 to debug their code just once?

Also there was the banned user in a limbo thing. A banned user would still be able to view the restricted topics he had access, upvote/downvote stuff and etc, as long as he didn't log off.
