Nintendo plans on selling the same games AGAIN
-
Comments speculate it's an emulator, maybe something based on the 3DS.
-
Lemme know when they come out with a new SNES.
-
@Erufael Funnily enough, at least 2 people said that very thing in the comments.
-
Man. I spent all that money building my own.

It's about time they cashed in on the nostalgia and made it easier for people to obtain and play legitimate copies of old games. Say what you will about emulators, this is better IMO.

Like the Virtual Console has been doing since the Wii?

What's wrong with an emulator, specially if you get the right controller like this one
???
-
@TimeBandit It's the whole console versus PC war. I'd rather not bother with emulating games. Of course plenty of people would prefer sticking with their emulation setups.

There are advantages to both. I have a pretty healthy cartridge collection for nostalgic purposes, but it's also nice to have save states.

THAT'S ALL THEY'VE BEEN DOING FOR 20 YEARS!

Meh. Let them. I plan on not buying them.

I actually disagree on this point. They've been relatively innovative. They made touch controls a thing in gaming, along with motion controls. No, they weren't the first to do either (though they did do the powerglove), but they made the idea popular, which I'd say is a good thing, Another of their commercial failures was, to be fair, a virtual reality device with games, and was commercially accessible. The 3DS had AR games built in, as a demonstration of what could be done with the technology, as did several titles for it.
Sure, their biggest sellers are Pokemon, Zelda, and Mario. But they've been pushing for interesting things for a very long time: as expected from a playing card manufacturer that managed to break into the video game industry.
And now they're leading an AR revolution of sorts: this time wielding all that nostalgia to bring new tech and concepts into general acceptance.
They may be the kings of rehash, and they may have antiquated user account systems, but they've always been a force for the spread of new tech.

Pretty sure that was someone else. Mattel, I think?
-
@Magus said in Nintendo plans on selling the same games AGAIN:

No they aren't. They just crammed their cartoon characters in someone else's game engine.

Which is the only reason it's happening, which is what I'm saying. AR is something Nintendo likes a lot, and they seized an opportunity.
-
@Magus Yeah well at least since the game's made by Nyancat or whatever, maybe, maybe, Nintendo won't be able to figure out how to fuck over its customers this time. They'll probably still find a way though.

Which doesn't support many games, such as Pokemon.

I was expecting this, but with more whaargarbl, from you. Disappointing.

Nobody else (AFAIK) came up with anything like Boktai and a light sensor, either.
-
Still waiting on the Vitality Sensor...

That was Konami. The game was only for a Nintendo platform, not made by Nintendo.

Or Dragon Warrior. :bitter:
(Though that's not Nintendo's fault. Square Enix knows they can milk the franchise for more money by remaking the games endlessly.)
-
What's next? A WiiFit aRPG? You've got to be kidding me.
And will this be emulated on an OS, or will it run NES hardware (obviously in a more compact form)? If it's not the same hardware, then there's really no point.
-
@Sumireko I liked WiiFit when it was called Yourself Fitness on original Xbox.
-
@FrostCat said in Nintendo plans on selling the same games AGAIN:
Boktai
i need to find a new cartridge for that.... water damage got my original.

Everyone who bought a game on Virtual Console disagrees with you.

I just wanted to play my old games, legally, without storing and maintaining a massive collection of old hardware.
I also throw money into the games industry
because I'm stupidto support developers and publishers I like, and to help stimulate genres I want to grow().

That's justified, though, because it allows them to have those games on their console. But with the "new" NES you'd effectively be buying it twice. It would be somewhat justified if it had the original hardware, since it would be more "authentic". But you'd be a sucker to buy this if it was just emulated.
-
@asdf said in Nintendo plans on selling the same games AGAIN:

Much. Like Red and Blue are on there now, at least. I'm just happy all the Megaman Battle Network games are on there, even if only 3 and 6 were good.
-

It pretty much has to be emulation, given it has a much more compact form factor and 30 games bundled in. 30 games seems very limited, but I guess licensing fees are a bitch. Can I at least root it and install more?
Filed under: I can fit all of the NES, SNES, and N64 games together on one micro SD card, easily.
-
@error To be fair, I do appreciate seeing them no longer treating Zelda 2: Adventure of Link as the red-headed stepchild.

I'd like to see an updated Zelda sidescroller. Like the Smash Bros minigames.
-
@blakeyrat Nintendo has always made great games. I hate their "console exclusive" model but I love their various Mario and Zelda games (and Rhythm Heaven!).
-
@anonymous234 Right. 4 of them. Over and over and over and over again.

Extremely competent first-party titles are what have kept them alive and thriving all this time.
-

They have a handful of core IPs, sure. That's the dressing, the flavor. You can't tell me that Mario Tennis, Paper Mario, Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart, Mario Party, and Super Mario RPG are the same game. They just fucking aren't.
-
@blakeyrat I honestly like that better than the Capcom model of: And then just stop. You only really need one franchise. But sell that without 90% of the content, at full price.
-
@error They all have the same word in the title, therefore they are the same game. QED.
-
@blakeyrat How many games in your steam library start with "The"?
-
@Sumireko said in Nintendo plans on selling the same games AGAIN:
But with the "new" NES you'd effectively be buying it twice.
I wouldn't, because I never bought on VC. But, look, the same applies to those poor fools who bought Star Wars on VHS, DVD, Laserdisc and then Blu-Ray so I don't feel these people are any larger suckers than the normal run-of-the-mill kind.
-
@Magus Only one.
Are you confused about the rule?
-
@error said in Nintendo plans on selling the same games AGAIN:

I suppose someone could miniaturize a 6502 and the other components, so that's not strictly true, but I bet it wouldn't be $60 then.
@error said in Nintendo plans on selling the same games AGAIN:

Article suggests or states (I forget which) there's likely to be more, so that's probably not necessary.
-

Oh, only for 3DS. Damn. :(
Can you still catch Missingno, BTW?
-

Like that ever stopped anyone...
-
@LB_ Selling old games is a very good thing. Hell, now that digital purchases exist I'd say that there's no reason to ever stop selling a game. We've gotten too used to the absurd idea that software has to be on sale for a few years and then disappear forever. Remakes are great too (if there's a demand, why wouldn't you adapt things to newer hardware?).
What's not great is: 1. Having to buy a particular machine to run a particular game, and 2. Having to pay for the same game more than once. We need to switch to a model where once you buy a game, it's associated to your account and you own it forever and can play it on any device (within technical limitations). When Nintendo figures that out, then I'll start paying for my games.
(hell, they don't even sell the same games for the 3DS and WiiU virtual consoles, even though they all run on the same emulators).
-
@asdf It's unlikely they've changed it in any way. But I have my blue cart.

Rhythm Heaven
Rhythm heaven is the greatest videogame series ever made, and I will not accept otherwise.

@blakeyrat I liked it when it was called "Going to the gym"
You might recognise it, here is the box-art
