Peak download hours

Hey,
When would you suggest I'd start downloading? And no, the blue text is not a link - no more information about when it's peak hours, are presented on the site...

Wow. This is really one of the lamest possible Sidebar attempts in a long time.
AmmoQ was nice enough to make a funny stuff forum, where you could have chosen to post this instead of polluting the Sidebar. However, I cannot even see how this is funny either. At least no one reads or cares about the funny stuff so it wouldn't have been such a stupid thing to do, but this... this is just amazing.
Really what were you thinking?

I just find it kind-a wtf that a site with links for global downloads, expects every citizen of the world to know when Asrock's server/bandwith hits peak...

So if you are getting a crappy download speed you couldn't just infer that it is peak time? I mean really, this isn't rocket science...

While this may be lame for the sidebar, he makes a good point. Since this is a global download site isn't every time a peak time? You do realize that the world is round don't you masterplan? You do realize that because of this people live in different time zones right? So tell me, if right now is a peak time, when would it not be a peak time so I can download? Oh damn, Austrailia just came on line...

Are you trying to look like a troll or are you just thick? The owners of the site know better than the users when the so-called peak times are. They know their bandwith, the number of users they get from different regions, the amount of traffic at the time of the download, etc. You could just do something simple like if (total_bandwith/number_of_users < 100KB/s) echo "try later";
The page like it is now is similar to those signs saying "floors slippery when wet": you can't actually complain because they did warn you but they don't help either. You can try and download a file and get it with 10KB/s and think that's bad but instead that can be the best you'll get. Therefore the site has to tell you if you could get a better download speed some other time.
Also, this was not particularly funny for me but I rarely find something on this site that actually makes me laugh out loud because I've seen too many WTFs. It's like "oh, he doesn't know how to use a for loop, he instead wrote all the possible cases with copy-paste? yeah, moron, the world is going down, etc."

This is still not a WTF. It is a stupid intepretation of a stupid message. Get over it already.

A couple of points here: there is no indication that they are referring to their own network being jammed, but instead may be referring to local traffic for the client. In that case the message makes reasonable sense. Second, there is a European server provided. So even if the message is referring to the server's network, there would clearly be off-peak hours of the European server. I'm assuming most of the traffic would be European anyway (hence the dedicated server) and thus have fairly predictable peak hours. Anyone who reads this as "be sure to download when our server gets the least amount of use even though you have no idea when that would be" is likely reading too far into the message. To me, it seems to pretty clearly be referring to either the peak hours of the client connection or the peak hours of the European server.

I have first hand experiance of downloading driver from Asus. It ALWAYS sucks! The best I ever got was 15Kb/s. Normal is around 2Kb/s. They even have a sticky forum thread for people to complain about crappy download speeds.
PS - I normally found the Japan server to work best.

1. I'm pretty sure that it's not refering to the peak hours for the client/ISP. That would be a WTF, since every site would download slowely. TheDailyWTF might as well put something up that we suggest people browse the forum during non-peak hours for their local ISP.
2. WTF are the peak hours of the European server? Just because I know where a server is located doesn't tell me at which time it gets the most requests.

I concur... just try downloading the multi-GB EEE PC linux source package... if you have a few weeks to spare.
And before anyone clueless chimes in Asrock==Asus (Asrock is the brand Asus sells their low-end stuff under).

This isn't a web site, it's a file. That disclaimer is on every download page on the site as far as I can tell and there are probably some hefty downloads available that could tie up the connection for awhile. In more bandwidth-constrained areas this would be a common problem, especially if a lot of people hop on and saturate the lines during peak hours.

Presumably 7am to 12am, approximately. Obviously there are multiple timezones to take into account, but "off-peak" almost always refers to after midnight until the start of business. Since the server is probably meant for use by European customers, there may be an implicit assumption about what counts as off-peak. I'm mostly just trying to explain why the message is there. I doubt the company made up the whole off-peak thing and it seems there are some unspoken premises at work here.

You don't mess with the AsRock. AsRock wants a beer. AsRock wants to party. The grammar makes AsRock sound like a drunken frat boy with a severe case of talking-in-the-third-person-itis.

With my ISP 3am-9am is "off-peak" which gives me a separate download limit. (40GB peak + 110GB offpeak on ADSL2+ for AU$70/month is about the best value in Australia!)
So yes, I do a lot of downloading "off-peak" :)
