Best current game for (FPS) modding

  • I am horrifically bored with Web Dev so I wanted something to muck about with and I remembered I quite liked mucking around with modding and wouldn't mind to do it for fun again with an eye to build something of close to pro quality.

When the CS beta 0.73 was a thing I mucked around a lot with Half Life modding and building my own maps, I used to do the same with the UT99 engine (it was so easy to build maps and mod).

I tried recently just to get the Source SDK and the Hammer Editor as the Half Life / Source engine while getting on a bit now is graphically decent and seems quite easy to mod (by the number of people modding it).

I can't get it working, and the latest SDK requires me doing a git clone and nothing builds in VS properly (of course it doesn't).

So are there any decent alternatives? The last version of UT I bought was 2003 / 4 and it is ancient these days and UT seems to be just selling the engine now even though I am familiar with some of the tooling. I don't really want to do full game dev as it just too time consuming. Unity is pretty much the same.

@lucas1 Maybe Fallout 4? Considering it runs on Morrowind Engine, it's pretty moddable. The downside is, you have to buy the game, and it's not worth it.

  • @Gąska Not really an FPS engine, I did by the game over the weekend as it was half price and it was less than a good bottle of whiskey and will hopefully last a few evenings more. I will have a look though, didn't even consider it.

  • Qfusion is a quake-derived fps engine that you can use however you want: Afaik it's mit licensed. It's mostly c with some c++ and a bit of angelscript. It's incredibly powerful.

Also, unreal 4 is free to play around with however you want, and they only charge you for distribution after a point iirc.

    Everything else is a mess.

  • @Magus note on qfusion: The only game that's used it is warsow, the founder of which went full Jeff and made the devs leave a month or two ago. They're planning their own new game with the engine, and are pretty good people (talked to them on irc, and I was a member of the forum there for years) if gruff. They'd probably fit in perfectly here actually. So, see if you can contact Vic or Crizis if you have trouble.

  • @Magus I used to play an old version of Warsow at university at the time it looked like Q3 plus some shaders. I will have a look.

I will look at unreal 4 if I can find out a way of stopping the installer being retarded and trying to put everything on my C:\ drive when it is 120gb SSD.

  • You could always use the Alien Swarm SDK if you want to stick with Source Engine.

  • @lucas1 Which version of the Source engine? Source SDK 2013, which is the current free version? Note that it's split into single player (sp) and multiplayer (mp) versions, which are based on the 2013 versions of Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Death Match (really Team Fortress 2, but those bits are commented out) respectively.

Unreal Engine 4 is being billed as "FREE FOR EVERYONE" (but mandates 5% royalties on anything you sell) on the Epic Games site. However, you do have to have an Epic Games account to download Unreal Engine 4.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

    Not really an FPS engine

My brother says that Fallout4 isn't the greatest of RPGs but is quite an entertaining FPS provided you can ignore the idiotic guns.

But there is also a "Source Base SDK" ... in the tooling section of Steam. Lets try that one.

@lucas1 There seems to be a pretty strong modding community around Insurgency which uses the Source engine and is somewhat similar to CS.
