Serious Plan

In keeping with the title's nature as a Japanese song title, the variant of what I propose is, in fact, Japanese.
I would like to formally form forumers formerly forlorn into a mahjong club, with whom I may play Japanese riichi mahjong on tabletop simulator or any other client we find acceptable.
I hereby post this topic in the hopes of garnering interest.
-
@Magus as long as i don't have to learn japanese..... and you're willing to teach me how to play..... and i don't have to do voice comms (i'm shy!)...... you have my attention
-
@accalia But surely the sound of a foxy lady's voice on voice comms would be a great boon for attracting all sorts of
horny teenage boysother dedicated formerly forlorn mahjong players
-
Is this much different from standard Mahjong (and no, I don't mean the tile-matching BS, I mean the standard 4-player tile game)?
I used to play that every once in a while at the local Barnes and Noble since a club would go host games, but I haven't done that for years. I'd probably need a refresher, but it was fun from what I remember.
-
This post is deleted!
-
@Magus I have the game on Steam, and the VR equipment... but I know fuck-all about mahjong. Not that I'm unwilling to learn.
Edit:
Damn it.
-
@accalia In that case, I suppose I should post some of the materials that may help:
These videos go really in-depth on things, and helped me to get some of what I'd been missing:
[redacted video, the youtube account is gone and it causes crashes in the youtube plugin - bz]Additionally, this PDF can help a lot:
http://mahjong-europe.org/docs/Riichi-rules-2016-EN.pdfWatching Akagi would be good if you want to be hyped about it. But not important.
It's a kind of hard game, and complicated, but fun.

- You can't win a hand without at least one Yaku.
- If you take discards, you can't get the free Yaku from declaring that your hand is ready.
- There are multipliers everywhere, particularly the dora, an extra multiplier for a specific tile type, more of which can appear if you meld four of a kind.
- You can only steal into a sequence from the person to your left, unless you're winning that turn.
These differences make it seriously intense, and people are generally more worried about playing any given tile.
-
@Magus Huh. Sounds interesting.
I saw TT Simulator was on sale now, maybe I'll pick it up for this.

In case anyone is interested. Such intensity.

-
Also, if anyone is interested, I have a Mahjong Club discord channel that I removed the voice channels from, if anyone has any interest in that. The specific individuals it might have contained by now weren't interested.
-
@Magus Interest interested inter-rest.
-
-
@accalia Oh i'd just noticed i repeated 'interested' a lot. but sure, that too.

tabletop simulator
Reading about this and the idea of using a physics simulator for a board game sounds like it belongs in the Bad Ideas Thread... I guess I'm imagining it like Surgeon Simulator where everyone I've seen playing it looks like they're trying to - well, perform brain surgery - using only their wrists.
I'd be concerned about knocking the board over, spilling the pieces - generally, fucking things up somehow.

It does have a flip table button, and it is somewhat volatile... but it isn't THAT bad.

— SlugSenderThough I found a much better kit than this. Though the dice can knock things around.

That reminds me... Has anyone on the internet even heard my voice?
Filed under: Gotta check if I've uploaded anything to YouTube with me in it....

don't let @kuro hear that question. ;-)
.... oh..... oopsies.

@JazzyJosh You ok buddy? Need to take some meds?
-
@blakeyrat What, I'm not allowed to make unfunny shitposts?
-
@JazzyJosh seeing that you're neither Blakeyrat or Lorne, the answer is "fuck you, give them money"
Or something.
-
So, sounds like we have some interest. Since my time zone is pst, that may cause issues except on weekends when I'm at home. Still, we'll see how it goes. I'm the worst organizer ever, my skill at such things is possibly worse than @accalia 's spellar.
I'll chat you my steam page if you're interested, since I share a name with 4k other users, and we can move on from there.

hmm... yeah that's a thing on steam.... i'm just glad i got into steam early enough i didn;t need extra numbers on my name....

I did too! But searching my login name doesn't return any results!
-
@Magus just get a descriptive url like
maguswtf

@Magus said in Serious Plan:

neither will searching for mine, my login name is very different from my profile name. ;-) It's more secure that way.
got the profile link, once i'll shoot you a friend request once i get home and don't have to deal with the office firewall
-
@accalia yeah, and I'm about to head to work, so it'll be a while before I accept it.
-
@accalia said in Serious Plan:

My name is the same everywhere, except in this idiotic places where they limit your name to 10 characters or sometimes even 6!
-
My display name matches my username for pretty much everywhere. Strangely enough, the email address I use to log into Steam hasn't existed for over 10 years. Good thing they allowed changing the contact email address...

You mean the administrators. I at least can't seem to create groups.
-
So, @e4tmyl33t , you should link that flash version you found as a learning resource. I doubt the other recruits have made any progress yet, but it could help!
-
I found this one:
It does also give a breakdown of various hands and whatnot below the flash game, though I do think the damn computers cheat sometimes. They need the tile I throw down way too much...
-
I've been getting steadily more comfortable with the game over the last couple days as I've played more and more (and more and more...) of it. I'll probably fuck it up somewhere when it comes time for me to actually handle making the calls myself rather than being prompted for it by the program, but time will tell.
-
@e4tmyl33t Ideally I'd like to make a nice free app with multiplayer and maybe rankings for win10. Probably no demand, but whatever.
-
@Magus There is a definite lack of non-tile-matching mahjong games for pretty much every platform, I've noticed. Fuckall for Windows, there's a couple for Android but all of their reviews seem crappy...
Wish I could get an english translation pack for that Touhou one. I've gotten the hang of which icons mean what in terms of stuff like pon, kan, riichi, furitan, etc., but it'd still be nice to not have to focus on it quite so much if I'm trying to do 3 things at once.
-

There is one for windows, but it's in Japanese.

So yeah. No multiplayer, though.
-
So uh, do we have more than two people yet who have tried learning mahjong? I'm still up to play some time, but it's a 4-player game, and as far as I know there are only two of us so far.

Yeah, I've fallen off the face of the earth as far as gaming is concerned for the foreseeable future. :(
