Be careful what you use IE for

I couldn't believe what I was reading when I saw the title of that page.

  •  So... you found a KB article describing a bug and failed at reading comprehension when you read the title, and you decided to post it here as a WTF?

Just to save others the click and explain this away:

    SYMPTOMS

Windows Internet Explorer 7 may crash when you use it to visit a Web site. This problem occurs when the following registry subkey is enabled:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\UseCoInstall

Certainly not - I showed it to various other people and they found it amusing and a little odd, and I thought more people might appreciate it here. Clearly I was wrong, feel free to tell me this a few more times.

Legend tells of a great reward for he who can post worthless crap and not get called on it.  As of yet, it has not come to pass, but there is a prophecy..  the ghost of RichardNixon will rise to grant the poster one wish..  the heavens will open and the final battle between ammoQ and MasterPlanSoftware will play out..  in the fighting the forums will be completely destroyed and all of us mortals killed..

    Hmmm...

While it's not a WTF per se, I agree with the OP that the title is kinda amusing. No M$-bashing meant, but "browser may crash when used to visit a web site" is funny.A more appropriate title might have been "ie7 may crash when a certain registry subkey is enabled" or simply "ie7 crashes"

  • @ammoQ said:

Yeah, I read the thread before looking at the page so I knew what to look for.  If I hadn't focused on the title I wouldn't have got it.  Re,minds me of the packet of nuts with "Warning: may contain nuts" message on for some reason

Psssst.   Don't bring up how MPS constantly flames.  In the past such observations have only led to suffering and misery for all on the forum.

The warm fuzzy feeling you get when you are doing the world a favour by making people's lives so simple that their jobs require even less intelligence/training/work then it does already? Although then, after you develop said technology and people get complacent, you have to hire another group of IT people in order to mantain the people using the software that we developed to make their lives more simple.....

  •  Back to topic: As you may know, Microsoft tries to translate contents automatically if there's no translation for the article. This title was somehow translated from

"Windows Internet Explorer 7 may crash when you use it to visit a Web site"  to

"Windows-Interneterweiterungsexplorer 7 kann abstürzen, wenn Sie es zu dem Besuchen einer Website verwenden" (German).

Translated back to English: "Windows-Internetextendingexplorer 7 may crash when you use it to visit a Web site"

Of course, in German it's okay to append a few words together and build a new word, but "Internet Extending Explorer" is nonsense. And even for Germans, 3 rather long words combined to one extra-long word is just too much. It is simply called "(Windows) Internet Explorer" around here

Yeah, you know, "Eat 'm and Smile"?

Vista seems to be fond of that, too. I just installed the (reversely translated) "Client extension update for group policy settings". Or, in german, the "Gruppenrichtlinienclienterweiterungsupdate".

That you CAN do something doesn't mean that you SHOULD do it. This adage holds true for language as well.

    [EDIT]

Actually, now that I think about it, this might make a fun YTMND...

    [Techno beats] Gruppenrichtlinienclienterweiterungsupdate - Gruppenrichtlinienclienterweiterungsupdate - Gruppenrichtlinienclienterweiterungsupdate - ...

    lol ...

Did you use the "Gruppenrichtlinienclienterweiterungsupdateassistent" to install it ?

    What was the "Gruppenrichtlinienclienterweiterungsupdateergebniss" ?

Did you get any  "Gruppenrichtlinienclienterweiterungsupdateassistantfehlermeldungen" ?

    lol

unless of course he has an older version of it in which case he would need to download the "Gruppenrichtlinienclienterweiterungsupdateassistantfehlermeldungsdiagnoseassistentsupdate" ...

good thing the microsoft made it easier through the good old "Gruppenrichtlinienclienterweiterungsupdateassistantfehlermeldungsdiagnoseassistentsupdatemanager"..

  • It's funny; thanks for posting, OP!  (We're not all dicks.)

Reminds me of something I read on a forum when trying to solve a video playback problem:  "There are some things that Windows Media Player is just not good at; playing media is one of them."

  •  I found it amusing.

TRWTF is that they don't even bother explaining what the key is, why it got set in the first place, or what changing it may do (besides make your computer work again).

Micro$osft definitely has a monopoly on PFM.

I'm always surprised at the attitude that we should only be nice on internet fora. Have you ever thought that sometimes it's better to be unfriendly? Why should people starting shitty threads be coddled rather than have to deal with honest reactions?

You want to know why I called the OP worthless crap? It's because so many bug reports are of the form "product X fails when conducting its primary task". Let's consider why that is. Maybe it's because they're the bugs most likely to be of interest to the program's users, and most easily spotted since they occur during the primary use of the app.

The KB article title is the equivalent of "Cars may crash while being driven".

  • @drinkingbird said:

For the love of God, will people stop using the word "fora"?  We do not live in the fucking Roman Empire and this is not a Latin site.  The word is fucking "forums".  FORUMS!

Oh, and I swear to Christ I will kill the next motherfucker who says "virii" instead of "viruses".

Um.. I think it would be "forae" in Latin. And what are those "fucking forums" you talk about? I don't remember any of those in Adult Friend Finder ;)

According to a friend of mine that went into the language studies, there is no such word as "viruses". Seems like "virus" applies to both singular and plural, but that looks odd when there is no other reference to what I'm talking about (one? many? what?)

Anyway, for the OP post ... unless you're humor-impaired, it is a funny fact to find "IE may not work when visiting a web site". I'm pretty sure someone reading "Ford Explorer trucks can crash when driving" would either laugh at the "fact" or outright avoid buying a vehicle that fails to do its primary function.

I also say "indices" rather than "indexes". Deal with it.

If you're going to push the "living language" argument, accept that divergence is a natural part of language development. Not everyone needs to follow the lazy approach to language the USA seems to find so appealing.

  • @danixdefcon5 said:

Nope. Forum is second declension, neuter, genitive -ī. Thus, the plural is fora. Oh, and sorry for beating you to it, Welpog...

  • @drinkingbird said:

So do I; yet I have never herd of fora before.

Although according to dictionary.com, fora is the correct plural form of forum, whereas there is no 'forums' listed. So it seems that you are correct.

That being said, you can use your 'divergence' argument to say that 'forums' not only makes more sence, is used more widely, and follows the 'standard' rules of making words plural and therefore is the undocumented evolution of fora. To each his own though. As long as it makes you feel "l33t" to use the archeic yet gramaticly correct plural of forum, I see no reason why not to let you :)

    Thanks for the tip :)

Next time I am using a website or program that does not do what I want it to, I'll randomly click/right click/hold down ctrl+alt/say the lord's prayer backwards randomly until the software figures out what I want to do.

Although this is probably a firefox issue, I know that there are ways around it. And who writes a forum system with a WYSIWYG editor and bbcode anyhow??
