The complimentary goldfish

  •  This isn't exactly IT related, but I did just go *WTF* when I looked over the list of amenities at the Monaco Seattle hotel. Amongst the usual and expected things are some very.. different services:

    • Complimentary newspaper delivered to your door each morning
    • Complimentary pet goldfish delivered to your guestroom upon request
    • Same day dry cleaning and laundry service

I'm not quite sure what to make of that. If it's complimentary, does that mean it's the guests to keep?

  • Nope, unless they can keep their internets as well.

    •  Complimentary high-speed Internet access, both wireless and Ethernet

  • That's not a WTF, it's kickass marketing tactics; even if they don't really offer a complimentary pet goldfish, I'll bet anything you can name in front of your mother that this will go viral.

  •  I'd rather have a pet donkey.

Note the word "access".  If it said "Complimentary high-speed Internet, both wireless and Ethernet", then the two statements would be a bit more comparable.

They give you a goldfish, and they give you *access* to the internet.

Well, I don't know about you folks, but I know where I'm booking a room if I ever have to stay in Seattle overnight.

  •  Yeah, you really get to keep the ten cent goldfish (and its fifty cent glass home). You might decide that it's really not convenient to acquire an aquatic pet just before flying home from your business trip.  In that case, housekeeping will be happy to "release your pet to the wild" after you check out.

  • In Tokyo, they give you a pet cricket.  Those bitches make it hard to sleep, unless you're used to camping.  On the plus side, they're tastier than plane snacks.

That's disgusting.  What kinda idiot eats crickets?

  •  I wonder if the TSA would let me take the goldfish on board in my 3.5oz ziplock bag.

Not really - dunk em in chocolate and they're surprisingly tasty....

You just gotta get past the first one!

Someone not quite dumb enough to eat in-flight meals? Though they are getting slightly better these days...

Only if it's a digital donkey!

    sarcasm?

I'm living in thailand at the moment and i can walk outside my hotel and buy a nice big bag of fried crickets for about $1 AUD.  Cockroaches too but they really do taste bad, crickets are actually pretty nice

  • Seattle? Goldfish??

I was always wondering what to do with poor little sushi. I sometimes just poured her into the sink - while the switch was turned on.

  • I want to check into that hotel and tell them I want a pony instead of a goldfish.  Pony's are more useful to the average business traveller, after all.  Plus they're cute.

In what way would they be more useful ?  Being a grown adult, I wouldn't want to ride on a pony. They might be cute, but then again, they would have to provide a shovel too.

You could always use a pony for a pack animal... I would like to see you try to do that to a goldfish!

But, yeah... definitly need to include a shovel...

It's easier to get a cab when you're with a pony. Also, most airlines will upgrade you if you're travelling with a pony. No one knows why this is.

More than half the American continent. In fact, some South/Central America countries have lots of "bug dish" varieties, and even here in Mexico you can buy fried crickets in a bag, much like french fries.

Not that I will ever eat those, though...

  • I'd rather eat a pony than a cricket any day, so I think my argument still stands.
