Download delivery methods

  • EA has recently made the full version of the Creature Creator for Spore available for direct download:

     This is the screen that appears when you choose to add it to your cart.

    What other types of delivery methods did they anticipate for a download?

  •  In theory, they could offer http download, https download, ftp download, bittorrent download etc.

     True, they would all still be 'digital' though. I was just pointing out how silly it is to have this selection when you only have one option to choose from.

  •  On a side note is there a point to this creature creator? Without the actual game does it do anything interesting?

    I agree that it probably should have skipped this step since there is only one option, but you come to expect that from game companies and other similar industries. They just make one templated app and use it for everything. So you get inconsistencies unnecessary steps like this pop up here and there.  I assume for some products you can get it in a download or shipped CD/DVD.

    https over avian carrier (http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2549.html)

  • I'm disappointed they don't offer the Analog option.

    No delivery, of course. Just drive to the server and pick it up.

    Maybe because tape readers aren't all that popular anymore.

     Maybe you could tie two African swallows together.  But then it becomes an issue of how would they grip it?

    It's pretty fun to play with for a little while at least.  That's about it though, just creating a creature and making them dance, pose, or do other things like that.  There's a trial version of the creature creator (which has a limited number of parts) which is free, so if you're interested in the game at all you may as well pick that up.

    I think the article linked in another thread mentions a way to test and play with your creature in a sandbox environment.

    You can have it walk around and do a number of predefined animations and dances. It's a nice little diversion (sooner or later everyone ends up trying to create the most screwed up creature), but without the game it's, well, just a nice little diversion.

    Yeah, the trial was kind of neat to play with, but I couldn't see the point in paying for the "full" version of one component of an unreleased game. I assume when the game actually comes out, the creature creator will be part of the retail version?

  • Its actually good design principles to make applications extendable for future expansion… I mean, what if in 2090 you could have the option for data to be transferred directly into the brain? At that point it would simply require you to create a new class, implement the IDiliveryMethod interface, associate applicable products to it and BAM!

    <o:p> </o:p>

    Now EA can sit back, relax and allow their enterprise delivery method application live for centuries to come.

    <o:p> </o:p>

    Although how hard would this be:

    if (DeliveryMethods.Count == 1)

       UseMethod(DeliveryMethods[0]);

    else

       DisplayChooseForm(DeliveryMethods);

    the real WTF is that I have to edit my post 3 times, eventually cleaning up the HTML manually just to get it to display correctly on the forum. I _hate_ tinymce...
