    In response to this thread.

And I've never talked to any Lotus Notes people on Twitter before-- they apparently just have a saved search on "Lotus Notes" and use it to butt-in to other people's conversations.

Let's be honest: at this point, spamming Twitter is probably the best use of the Notes development budget. Sort of a Scorched Earth policy, if you will.

So if they can stop short of having their users drive a fertilizer bomb into their lobby, IBM considers it a job well done.

Does anyone else suspect that the Notes team has one of those "Days Since an Accident" boards in their office, except it's titled "Days Since We've Driven a Customer to a Shooting Spree"? And that some poor IBM middle manager frequently has to walk up to it, gently shake his head and set it back to zero?

So Lotus Notes is pretty much emacs' thalidomide baby.

  • One of my favorite internal projects a few months ago was replacing a Lotus Notes data entry app that one of my predecessors hacked together... oh, probably long enough ago that LN's offline data sync foo was actually sort of relevant at the time. (What's a web app?) Between the weird UI and the licensing issues on both clients and server, I can only imagine what merry hell it would be to actually have to use the thing to deal with your e-mail.

  • Out of curiosity I clicked the link without having Lotus Notes installed and it gave me what appeared to be an XML file that contains another XML file in a CDATA section that mainly serves to link to another URL...

I used it for a while, though not as my primary email / calendar / whatever. One of my customers used it with their ERP system, though, as an EDI system to transmit orders to us, and for us to transmit status back. I had to get a modem on my machine (this was late nineties) so I could have Notes dial out to their server. So while I never got to truly experience the hell that others describe, I got a good glimpse, and everything I saw lived up to the hype.

  • I used it for a while... we had the version that was right before the one that ran inside eclipse...

Then we switched to the eclipse version.... I did everything I could to avoid it... I tried moving just the email parts into the eclipse that I was using for real work but that was futile....

If it still is email inside an IDE then someone seriously needs to be kicked... repeatedly...

Neckbeards, we can re-engineer Notes. We have the intellectual property. We have the capability to build the worlds first second operating system in an IDE. EclipseNotes will be that IDE. Worse than either was before. More fragile...more bloated...slower.

Was a fairly heavy user, but stopped well over 15 years ago. Touched it one in the last decade. In the early 1990's it did have some compelling promise....

Okay, so Notes is universally reviled. Does it have any redeeming features? Other than those that are.. erm.. found in other products?

It can do things other than email. Then again, so can the internet.

In all fairness, I think most of the people who use it are people who started using it years and years ago, and most are jumping ship to Exchange or Google Apps for Business.

    No.

The "selling point" is that in addition to being shitty at email and calendaring, it can also be used to make shitty Access-like database apps. The big problem with this is that buying a copy of, say, Outlook and Filemaker for each seat can accomplish the same thing, and both Outlook and Filemaker don't suck shit, and your cost is the exact same. Or, hell, C# is so easy now you don't even need a Access-clone, just build your app in C# Express and SQL Server Express and it'll take the same dev time.

The real selling point is IBM buys C**-level employees crack and hookers.

  • @blakeyrat said:

Which is Notes' biggest flaw. If they'd buy me crack and hookers, I'd evangelize the shit out of it.

  • To be fair, Notes 8 (the first Eclipse-based version) made the Notes UI look a lot better than previous versions.

It didn't work any better, it wasn't any faster, Domino apps were still crap, and all three client applications (Notes, Domino Admin, and Domino Designer) would still lock up simultaneously if any one of them tried to contact a server that wasn't there anymore.

But it looked a lot better.

    Yes, it's you.

Or rather, it's CS localising the post timestamp but not the signup date.

His post timestamp reads "23 Jul 2012 4:40 AM" to me. I don't know what that equates to in Canadark Standard Time, so I'm guessing that's accounting for the discrepency.

Wow it just now found a thread from May 17th. That's actually pretty good performance, by Notes standards. Hey, just FYI, in about a month you're going to learn about this thing called "Microsoft Surface". It's pretty fucking sweet. Might even run Notes... 12 years from now when IBM finally figures it the fuck out. (I figure that's about right-- it only took them about 12 years to figure out how to work well with Windows NT's multi-user features.)

Since you put it that way -  I jump on the Twitter search every now and then responding to poeple's comments in an attempt to help them out. In a few cases that has lead to a consulting gig and some $$. So yeah, I guess that's a stupid idea then, isn't it... ;-)
