Some clueless twat's been fucking about with the design again.
This apparently indicates that I have six notifications. Despite the red boil of shame being attached to the "chats" icon.
Web design. Crayons for the mentally retarded.

Try making your browser window 3px wider until the problem goes away
-
Oh for fuck's sake. What fucking spastic thought that was good idea?
This really is the most retarded piece of software I've ever had to endure. @julianlam, you are a moron. So are all your developers. Please go and put your heads under surface level in the nearest septic tank. And keep them there.

Better idea: switch to desktop mode from responsive (in the menu that drops down from your avatar).

in a forum where the users insult you for every bug they find?

@kt_ your idea sounds like work, out with you

I would never suggest you do any work. I suggested @tufty should do it. For us. For free. And then we could install it, see what a piece of shit it is and beach about it. And so the only thing @tufty could do to get rid of our damning looks and extremely hurtful words would be to kill himself.

Oh shit. I thought you were joking at first. Explains why the browser at home looks correct.

Sounds like pointless work. Why would I bother? Forum systems that work already exist, for free, the fact we aren't already using one is seemingly a comment on our slavish adherence to having the absolutely most crappy software that we could possibly have.
I could actually give a bit of a pass to Jeff on this, as he seems to think that making a new piece of forum software with infiniscrolling will allow him to police away "nastiness" on the internet. Discourseβ’ is part of his grand plan, his arme de guerre, the thing he has built an entire delusion around. It's a shit sandwich, but it's a shit sandwich with a purpose.
@julianlam's nodeBB doesn't get that free pass. There's no grand plan. Just a "make a forum platform using super hip cool groovy technology rather than
fuddy-duddycrappy old PHP". But what they've made is just another usability and security shit sandwich, and they don't even seem to care. Because it's got "modern mobile-first responsive design".Well, you know what?
You can shove your modern, mobile-first responsive design right up your fucking arse and leave it there until you actually have software that works properly.
Anyway.

I just got back from the beach. Didn't see any shit there, but it was extremely windy - maybe it blew away.
@kt_ said in So, been away on holiday for a week:

Not true. I could, for example, ban you all from my bug tracking system, and suggest that you migrate off it. Or I could just laugh.
The latter, I'm already doing. But only at you.
-
@Lorne-Kates I feel like I should be sympathetic, but I got distracted by a more important issue. Why does your picture of 99+ have a drop shadow? Is this the beginning of the revolution where UI elements rebel against flat designs?

Oh, I got laughed at by @tufty for a typo. You know what? Autocorrect is a fucking beach! :D
I wanted to read the whole of your post but I just don't care much and so I couldn't be bothered.

@tufty btw, the beach joke was the lamest one ever!

MFW... the is starting to become known to @dcon...

Here's a simple suggestion.
Rather than offset it - thus causing issues on a reduced screen. Simply have the number as an overlay with a transparent background.

-
Hey, @tufty, fbmac-ing posts is not cool!

Someone posted a link to the old Community Server boards a while back, and suddenly I realized I missed its nice stable non-SPA UI.
Even with fake pages (which aren't on the fucking top so if you're scanning backward you have to scroll back to the bottom to page backward) something about the way everything is always shifting and scrolling and fading in and out just gives me a feeling of being lost at sea sometimes.Edit: actually I think it would be neat if the pagination bar was "sticky" attached to the nav, though the vertical real estate on mobile is probably too scarce for that.
Editedit: there already is the (mostly worthless) scrolly thing stuck to the top, but it won't cross page boundaries.
-
@error Haven't tried the paged bodge, the pagination bar doesn't stick? That's a shame.

The went to the glue factory, and we're all grateful for that.
I think it's like the New Coke conspiracy. They introduced something so horrible that we were glad to take the forum software with high fructose corn syrup.

I manually put a drop shadow around all my screen shots. I have the keyboard shortcut muscle-memoried by this point. Otherwise dumb as shit software will present an image without a border, and posting a screenshot looks like a streak of white shit on white shit, with little nuggets of information floating in between.
Because humans using frames to distinguish an image from it's background is only a concept thousands of years old. Why should we still do that?

There's a keystroke that puts a drop shadow on screen shots?

Frames securely mediate by design.

Huh? It's a free screenshot utility and rudimntary photo editor (select, crop, zoom, fill, rotate, layered shapes). Nice, simple, free and It Just Works.
