E3 2016

Here's a thread in case anyone wants to talk about it.
I'm a bit confused why everyone thinks that being able to play XBox One games on Windows 10 via UWP is news - I remember hearing about that ages ago; maybe it was just a rumor then? Either way, it's nice to know I won't have to buy an XBox One or XBox One S if for some reason an XBox1Win10 exclusive looks interesting to me.

It's been touted that you could stream games from an Xbone for a while, but directly playing them on a PC hasn't been done yet.
-
@Tsaukpaetra Ah, so it was a misunderstanding on my part then.

Wait, but
but
but
console games on PC?Then why will people buy the console?
Or maybe... that was Microsoft's plan since 2001! Conquer the console market, break down the artificial walls between console and PC, get people to switch to PC and buy more Windowses! BRILLIANT, BRILLIANT I SAY!
-
@anonymous234 people have been pointing out that it now makes sense to have been showing off the other entertainment features of the XBox One when it released. I'm not sure what that means though.
-

The console's still great for multiplayer stuff. Plus, it's cheaper to buy an XBox console than it is to buy a comparable gaming laptop.
-
@LB_ You know what I don't get? Where the hell is my Windows TV™?
There's Apple TV, there's Chromecast, there's Roku, there's Fire TV, there's the Android sticks, there's PlayStation TV, and there's the half a dozen custom SmartTV OSs, all ferociously fighting, right now, to become the standard platform for smart TVs.
And Microsoft has their UWP, shiny, new, and perfect for this purpose, and they're just sitting there? Do they want to be fucking left out again? Or is the Xbox One their entry into that market? That shit costs $300, it's not a valid competitor to something that costs $50!

Local multiplayer? That thing that 90% of new 2-10 player games don't have for no explainable reason?
-
@ben_lubar I guess I'm showing my old age, then. I figured they still had that these days. If not, then carry on without me. I'll be playing my N64.

Microsoft killed Windows Media Center after 8.1.
-
-
@anonymous234 Even weirder, they USED to compete in that space in XP with Windows Media Center, and no longer does.

Pretty much.
-
@The_Quiet_One These days "local multiplayer" means "bring your console over and we'll connect them to the network!"
Yes, consoles managed to reinvent LAN parties. Good job. Gone are the days of garotting your friends using a SNES controller then throwing their bodies into a lake, FUCK YOUR RED SHELLS, YOU FUCKER!
Or was that just me?
-

Worse, two+ child households are no less common, yet they expect parents to shell out for two consoles?

I mean, nintendo consoles still usually have real local multiplayer. But yeah, the controllers are all wireless, so you'd have to use them as cudgels now.

The new Zelda game looks amazing. There's still time to watch the livestream here - click in the player and press 0 to go back to the start, and you can watch at 2x speed to catch up. This is looking to be a truly revolutionary Zelda game.
-
@LB_ I wonder if the people who bitch about Activision releasing the almost-same Call of Duty game every year are the same people who are perfectly ok with Nintendo just making the same 3 or 4 games over and over and over again.
-
@blakeyrat I wasn't being sarcastic. This is really really different for a Zelda game.
-
@LB_ And Advanced Warfare was really different for a Call of Duty game, but somehow it got the bitching and Nintendo gets a pass.
I honestly do not get Nintendo fans. I honestly believe it's impossible to be a fan of any of that company's awful customer-hostile behaviors unless you're inflicted with nearly fatal levels of nostalgia.
-
@blakeyrat You can be a fan of the games without being a fan of the tone-deaf lawyers.
-
@LB_ But you can't buy the games without financially supporting the lawyers, and the "screw consumers" behavior like not having a proper accounts system so if your hardware dies, you lose all your purchases.

Saw it on YouTube yesterday and holy shit. This is the most they've broken the mold since making part 2 a sidescroller. Physics? Crafting?
BulletArrow time? Shield-boarding?It looks amazing.
-
@error I wonder what the general reaction to it be. Seems like any time Nintendo changes does something different people get up in arms about it (e.g. wind waker)
-
@LB_ actually the most import news was this:
-
@kt_ fuck you Americans and your stupid dates. I was actually happy for a moment.
@blakeyrat, are you going to play this game?
-
e.g. wind waker
Gameplay-wise, that had very little different to OoT. The difference people bitched at was the graphics style and which game has dated better?
-
@blakeyrat said in E3 2016:

Do you think that occurs to most people?
-
@FrostCat I don't care?
-
@blakeyrat neither do most people. Which is why they keep playing Nintendo games. Q. E. Duh.
-
@FrostCat I can't control what other people do, I can only control what I do.
-
Apparently the Zelda: Breath of the Wild trailer is now the most viewed video on Nintendo's channel. So there's that.

Then why will people buy the console?Convenience. Hooking up the PC to a 50-inch TV and controlling it from a couch with a controller might be tricky for computer-illiterate "I just want my grumpy Halo" types.
Same reason why the so-called "Smart TVs" are still even a thing, despite providing as much added value as an HDMI cable going from your PC.

My dad has an Apple TV connected to a television only slightly larger than his monitor about a foot away from his monitor.
