Fillipino Computer Engineers!

  • Since everyone wanted to give me shit about my first wtf situation - i'll give you a most recent one. - Now I am in no way being an annoying little teenager.

I currently work at an internet cafe - as the tech - i maintain the systems and I help customers and i reinstall clients computers and such. We had this other employee, who apparently had a "Computer Engineering" qualification from the Phillipines.

We he worked there as the Computer Technician and he was not pleased when I was hired. He became "staff" and I became the "tech" which was his job.

Well recently before his prompt "redudancy" from the workplace, we had a situation... One that was a little weird.

Our staff computer, the one thats Virus Free and totally secure with Kaspersky AntiVirus (an AV i've used for some time and have tested extensively) was disabled... We look into the logs as to why it would be disabled.

Apparently the logs say the last thing Kaspersky did was (before being disabled) was attempt to clean a virus from E:\Jackz Stuff - naturally we knew what had happened. Jack had plugged in his USB drive, Kaspersky scans everything instantly and prompted Jack to sort out this virus issue on his flash drive. To get rid of the messages, he disabled the AV and completely infected the entire system by disabling the system AntiVirus software...

He comes in for his shift and we ask him, if his computers at home are running really slow and crashes, he looks at me, my boss and says yeah how did I know? - my employers look at each other with fear...

Although I would never have him near a computer personally - He once asked me a questions like, why Office 97 wouldnt work on sisters new Vista laptop...

  • So you've got someone who doesn't get AV s/w... what does that have to do with where he's from?

  • And who is Jack?

You are exceptionally bad at telling stories in a clear manner.

  • I think it is time for you to stop posting new threads. They are not funny, they are barely comprehensible, and you seem to not understand what a 'WTF' is.

My advice is that you spend some time lurking and maybe try and get a better understanding of this forum.

Yeah really, I smell a new tuberodent.

  • Although he should have spent some time editing his post, it most clearly is a WTF. Jack (the Philipino) disabled the antivirus application so that it would stop warning him that he was installing a virus. Anyone who works as a computer technician (esp. if they have a CE degree) ought to know better. Hmm... there's another WTF hidden in here.... why would someone with a CE degree be working at an internet cafe? You'd figure he'd be working for Intel or something.

I think he's talking about where his degree is from, although the title makes me think the guy is phillipino too.   Not the best post ever but you would think a guy with a computer engineering degree would get AV software i think was his point.  Even if it wasn't expressed in the most coherent way possible

If we all posted every experience we ever had with someone who didn't understand computers or some concept within the field, this sidebar would be overflowing with garbage.

    Unemployment?

My mom lives in a small city ... ok ... more like a small town, 'cept it has about 150k population. She once was telling me "and that's George, who studied CSE (Comp Systems Engineering) and set up an internet cafe, and there's Araceli's boyfriend, studied CSE, and set up a computer store ... wait, is that the only job you CSE guys can get, or what?"

My answer was: It's the only job I'll ever get if I stay in this god-forsaken place!

Fortunately, I went to college at a mid-sized city (Leon,Mexico) and after graduating, finally got to return to Mexico City thanks to a good job offer. But still, before graduating, I worked for an "IT" company that had an internet cafe as a "side business". Basically, it was attended by one of the tech support guys, and gave us enough money for public transportation, and company-paid lunch. They wanted to keep me after graduating, but $400/month wasn't really my idea of "big bucks".

  • I've got a good one. So, t94xr is sitting in front of his computer, dribbling into his lap while posting on tdwtf, and his mom calls him from upstairs to hoover his room. </end WTF>

  • Title says "Fillipino Computer Engineers"
I only count one in this story.

    Needs more Fillipino computer engineers.

And yes, MPS is right:  if we all posted every Anti-virus mishap... everytime someone pushed a phone cable into an ethernet port, etc,  then we may as well post about getting shorted a nickel from a store clerk.
The little bit of "substance" this story has comes from the fact at least the guy was underqualified to do his job, yet had a degree, so at least it isn't a "dumb client/grandmother/relative" story.  It would probably have made a decent reply in a thread there people were sharing general wtfs in that vein (like the "highschool security" thread etc) if it was shorter and conciesely written (and promising more Fillipino computer engineers than delivered).

I wouldn't call this a wtf situation. "Computer Engineering" is indeed a field that many people have degrees in - I have a BSCE myself, from a major accredited engineering school at a state university on the Eastern US seaboard. The ECE curriculum did not spend a lot of time focusing on how to set up software on a PC. In fact, ECE curricula tend to focus mostly on hardware concepts, and the highest level software you ever end up discussing (in a class setting, anyway) tends to be the operating system. Viruses and security aren't discussed much in class at all. If you want to formally learn about these things, you're expected to take some CS classes, or maybe something in IT or Information Science (CS tends to be more theoretical, and doesn't cover configuring PC's anyway).

I've seen electrical/computer engineering professors who are barely PC literate. They may not know how to operate a Windows PC, but they certainly know a heck of a lot about transistors, flip flops, caches, ALU's, and what-have-you. You don't have to know much at all about the software that will end up running on a computer to design the hardware on which it runs. Consider the evolution of the 8086 processor up to the x86 architecture... modern x86 CPU's are still functionally very similar to the 386 processors of almost 25 years ago (barring extended instruction sets and other optimizations). I doubt that Intel knew about Windows Vista, DivX, or even computer viruses at all when the 386 series was designed way back in the early 80's.

I was going to avoid bringing this up at all, but obviously the OP is insinuating that a degree in CE from the Philipines is worthless or wtf'y. That's a rather xenophobic point of view... I'm sure this isn't the case, and given my points above, it's totally reasonable that the person in question received a fine education in Computer Engineering. Maybe to work as a sysadmin a degree in IT and some certifications is more appropriate.

Yay! Another thread is going to get ruined by some idiot arguing with MPS and trying to show that despite all the evidence he is not a pointless looser. Would you please send him a private message if you don't like him, rather than clogging up our fourms with your petty crying.

  • @Dude said:

Dude:  this forum has a pretty high 'flame threshold' but if there is one thing the community as a whole agrees on, its not to 'cross post flame' - that is, if you want to argue with MPS, keep it to the thread it started in (What is your ISP/"The soup thread") and don't follow users around making snide comments.  You'll have a lot more than just MPS displeased with you in a hurry.  I am not a Mod or anything - but I would recommend that you read the "Moderator WTF" thread to get an idea of the general consensus.

Of course, I am not saying "keep it in that thread and you are fine" (I have no say in that) but just pointing out the "cross post flaming" is not respected here by the community at large, based on my observations.

    Wow, well said actually. Bravo!

Also, if you feel the need to flame/hate me, feel free to join the IRC channel and hate me in person. That way everyone else doesn't have to suffer.

This is his business. You see, you are polluting the forum with your 'frist post !!!1!!!!~~!!!' nonsense. Did you not expect other people to think you are an idiot?

    ROFL.
    *golf clap*

Hey, I was just letting you know you are going to piss off a lot of people with the cross flaming, but I guess that must be your agenda.  I'm trying to figure out if you are an old troll that signed up with a new account or not, but honestly I can't think of any with such a compelling lack of wit.

But maybe its just a stream of new traffic bringing them in.

SpectateSwamp is a complete and utter loser, but I would still ratehr spend a week in the new Swamp Shack with him than put up with another mindless dolt like you. Hell, I'd even rather hang out with Jim Bastard and his druggie douchebag friends.

An eleven-year-old kid can come up with better insults than you, and have the maturity to know that insults don't make you right. I don't know if you are the same idiot with loads of sockpuppets, or if a bunch of your idiot friends joined up too, but you are not welcome.

MPS is a perfectly decent person, but people like you are grate on anyone, and he likes to try to keep down the number of idiots we have around here. Unlike him, you do not appear to have posted anything of value to these fora.
