Password is such a simple password...

  • So here I am, Me and my mate Grant were good friends with the Administrator for the entire school network. Aslong as he knew our passwords he didnt care which computers we hacked into (all machines installed with Fortres101) aslong as he knew our passwords.

My mate left school, I left a couple of months later.

About the time I left school the System Administrator was overseas with the Soccer team in Bali, leaving the Librarian to look after the school network.

Now let me tell you a bit about Fortres, on basic security settings you installed it with, you could easily open the Open dialog in Word, Excel, any program - go to C drive and rename its installation (C:\FGC\) path - simple. Well the librarian didnt like me much, since I had previously disabled Fortres on the library systems (except one) and she realised this and found out it was me.

The System administrator comes up and tells me shes been at it for most of the day (it being 2pm now) trying to get fortres back working again - I inform him, "its not my fualt if she cant look at the folder structure of the computer properly" - few minutes later the admin informs her of how I hacked them and she gets them running again - I was banned from the library system - no biggy...

Well this was later on, I leave school and I had my computer - at that time the most secure (short of slaving the hard drive) system on the entire school campus with Fortres101. I leave school and I get an angry phone call from the librarian (admin being overseas) because she cant get into my machine in the typing class because I hacked into it.

    She demands the password!!

    I strangely inform her, it's  ' password  ' ...

I put down the phone and leave her to deal - month later I catch up with the admin in town who informs me, she couldnt get into it, she had no idea how to disable it because I didnt get her the correct password. He looks at her, strangely and asks her what I said the password was, she informs him that I believe shes an idiot and tried to claim it was 'password'... She didnt believe it was the password and passes it off.

He goes to the computer, types in p a s s w o r d, she stands there in shock as I actually told her the password and the system administrator who knew it anyway types it in to the system and presto the console appears and the security on the system is lifted.

  • At my college we are required to change our password every 30 days, and you can't use any of your previous 10 passwords. So far my password has been "123456", "654321","Password" and "teacup"...... nobody has got into my account (Not that there's any point as I store all my stuff online/on USB drives)

  • OMGz you are such 1337 h4xx0r!

Seriously, was picking on a librarian supposed to impress us?

We can all see the WTF here, but I doubt it is what you were going for.

  • Lame.

Anyway, most campuses that bother with something like Fortres are generally smart enough to deny write access to C: through NTFS permissions and pick a password other than "password", so I have to second the OMG U R 31337 ]-[@x0|2!!!!111one sentiment.

At least the librarian knows that "password" is a dumb password - apparently your Good Friend The Administrator doesn't.

I have lots of WTF situations. But considering she was really annoying and she was always paranoid about me...

I came to school one time just to prove she had something against me. I plugged this REALLY OLD laptop into the power and pissed around playing DOOM II on a few levels i made, my mate had doom aswell and yeah whatever.

the Librarian informs the admin (who knew about my laptop since he gave it to me - pentium 75, 64MB ram - 4gb hard drive, i mean old) - he informs her he knows all about it... And this is the situation that led me to hack the library systems - she came up to me and wanted to take my laptop because she didnt want me to "hack into the school network" - now I wasn't really all up with networking back then but I was pretty sure that no Pentium 75s of any laptop kind had network cards and since it was my first little laptop I didnt care.

She takes the laptop - spends a couple of days with it and refuses to give it back. I get the School Administrator (who gave me the laptop) to give me the laptop back off her, she doesnt like the fact that I have a laptop but she cant do much about it...

Well my mate he wanted to the DOOM 2 cheat codes, his mate goes to a library computer - goes online and prints the codes off from the printer. The librarian looks at the printing and thinks its me, sotrms over and wants me to hand over my network card. (the only cables coming from my computer being the power, and a mouse) I look at her blankly...

Well a few weeks later, I slowly use the computer for "school related purposes" and that gives the couple of seconds it gives me to go along and change the FGC folder on each computer to FGC2

So it wasn't really unprovoked, the most of the WTF situation i was trying to express was the fact that I left school, like i cared about the computer and I did what she wanted, i told her the password. The admin who came back to this situation didnt realise that this librarian was this retarded to not actually try 'password' as a password, instead think iwas having her on and ignored it.

He typed it in real slow and she just stood there in shock because she treated me like utter crap because of her own paranoia and lack of knowledge herself.

As far as I know, she was never put in charge of the network again...

  • ok it seems you have no idea what fortres was...

it was installed on DEFUALT SETTINGS!!   I renamed the FGC folder - i had the install file I reinstalled it applied my own password - known to the admin as p a s s w o r d !!!

simple! it was Windows 98, so no NTFS permissions and the I used the password password because of the fact that you would never use it as a password... The Adiministrator never used it as his password...

I would too if I were her. You were only being a prick and disabling school property and making her life harder.

Has it ever occurred to you that you were just being an annoying prick, and that the problem wasn't her, it was you?

No, I think it is that we don't care.

You were being an annoying little teenager, that is not what we want/need to hear about here.

  • MPS, I am amazed that you can even understand t94xr enough to know he's being a whiny kid. I read his posts and all I got out of it was that he renamed a directory and played Doom. I haven't seen such confusing text since the last time Swamp was on.

I've worked 2 years for a company with the same requirements. My password always was 'my_real_password_YYMM' :)

What can I say? I am used to reading TardSpeek. I think I gained this ability from Spectate.

I know exactly what it is.  They were using the same piece of junk when I was in university years ago.

As crap as it is, it still can't be cracked without some other privilege escalation on a properly-configured NT/2K/XP/etc. machine.

So the point of the story is that you cracked security on a Windows 98 machine.  Whooptie doo, that's about as exciting as saying you tied a string around a quarter and used it to get a free Coke from some old vending machine.

Seriously, grow up.  Do something productive with your knowledge and obviously abundant free time instead of making life difficult for hardworking schmucks and bragging about your "exploits" to total strangers.

Hey now, he works at an internet cafe, obviously he is already seriously applying himself.

I wonder what kind of 31337 ]-[4><()|2 would be able to hack the school network without a network interface, which was t94xr's original point. He was playing Doom on his laptop, not in the school's computers, so the librarian can't even argue with that (unless he had the speakers on.)

I distinctly remember playing Quake2 and Starcraft at my school's library in the 4th floor. This was a "non-silent, study" area, so there was no real problem with us playing with our laptops up there, and being local games, we didn't even eat the campus bandwidth. This was circa 1998.

The librarian was just being a prick without reason, and there is no better incentive for rebellious behaviour like unjustified punishments.

Um... no, I think the "real WTF" was the librarian not even trying to use the password password.

"Hacking" win9x as per se isn't a feat, and anyone that did it back then has grown up already to know that it doesn't take a genius to do it.

She has a reasonable expectation of the OP being a retard. He could have taken a hint.

good TardSpeek deciphering, i read the post 1.5 times before i decided it wasn't worth it and had no idea WTF he was talking about. I have a feeling it may have even been FuckTardSpeek.

Although it's about time someone took those damn librarians down a peg or two, all with their books and doing their job and shit

I can't decide if he is a whiny kid or if it's really a brilliant parody. Either way, his run-on sentences have a certain...something.

    I think it's called eyestrain.
