Path of Exile

  • @Sentenryu If you do indeed go that route don't forget to get some skill effect duration, it really helps in keeping Blade Vortex up, either from the tree or from the gem (or both if you go near one).

You could always switch to CoC Cyclone Trickster too if you end up having issues sustaining Blade Vortex.

  • @Magus that's the part I don't understand about CoC, how does it cast faster than manual, if you do not aways crit and if it doesn't aways trigger?

  • @Sentenryu Cast on crit generally involves a lot of hits really close together: think barrage with the unique jewel that makes the first and last shot fire an extra projectile, on a quill rain, with 60% crit and a diamond flask. Every hit any arrow makes (and they can pierce and chain for more hits!) can trigger one or all of the supported spells, with a 10ms cooldown between casts of a single skill.

You can cast a spell 5+ times in the time it would take you to cast it once, and you'll generally cast more than one spell that fast.

  • @Magus but would it be worth to do a CoC blade vortex? changing for a more efficient spell would lose the build theme, that being lawn mower.

  • @Sentenryu that's why I intend to trigger that and maybe discharge from cyclone, which means more lawnmowers!I wouldn't cast it from a ranged skill.

  • @Magus I think as long as I get enough chaos orbs to buy Bino's Kitchen Knife, I can do a CoC blade vortex poison build. Divinarius and Carcass Jack are non-essential, but nice to have if the build can pay for it.

That's decided then, I'll be playing lawn mower weed killer assassin on prophecy.

  • Things I find while planning a build, Walking nuke assassin: http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1656405

That's one way of culling a boss... I guess...

  • Only standard remains. Perandus merged at 3PM, and my stash is a mess. The worst part is, I'm not going to be able to play prophecy until sunday probably.

My friend is planning on Juggernaut Discharge, and I'm still planning RF totems.

  • Also:

I will have the weapon effect!

  • I never even bother looking at my standard stash tabs, it is so messy. At least it is better than D3 where they mail you all the items and you have no where to put them.

The Weapon Effect looks nice, goes great with a chaos spell build.

  • My only comment is that the more I run the labyrinth, the more I HATE the traps.

PoE's movement commands are less than ideal to traverse those gauntlets.

On the other hand, I found out that the blade vortex poison build is not as awesome as I thought, it rules everything until after the first enconter with voll but has too little defenses against anything that comes after, Specially bosses, you have to stay put for too much time in order to deal any damage, as 2~3 blades simple don't deal enough. The poison is mostly inconsequential, as it scales with the original hit and each hit of blade vortex is quite weak.

This build would be so much better if Life Gain on Hit worked with BV

  • @Sentenryu Apart from darts, I don't have too much trouble with the traps. Those things are evil, though.

Poison blade vortex could probably work, but you definitely need defense; as any close range build needs.

  • @Magus the thing that guts this build the most is the cast time, it makes it very hard to get out of the way of the big attacks. It's also hilarious that I can't get away, the character has 59% increased movement speed.

I have problems with the rotating spike traps and mobile sawblades (the horizontal ones), mostly what kills me is the gauntlets to get to the golden key.

I think there's something wrong with my client, as most of the time the dart traps do nothing to me, I'm hit, get the visual effect, but lose no life. I can't explain why, maybe I really am blocking the projectile?

  • @Sentenryu Maybe? The damage is the least of your worries, though: they do a slowing chaos poison on hit.

That gets me killed by the others. The roombas aren't too bad imo, but the tall spike ones are a huge pain, because you can't even leapslam over them safely. Still, once you get the timing down, most of those gauntlets are fine. There are always safe spots.

But yeah, I can't even imagine making directly casting blade vortex work.

  • I used self-cast BV for single target until level.....75 or so which is when I got my 6L. I could usually get to 22-25 stacks by standing on the boss and continually casting it. If I needed to get away from a boss I would whirling blades away or quicksilver and run. Eventually I stopped using it because I needed to level more gems and my EK was 6L and doing more damage single target anyways. I think I only lost 2-4 blades when whirling away before I would cast and whirl back.

The traps were annoying at first but after the 2nd week I got used to them (and started using Immortal Call CWDT which helped a ton) and could usually lightning warp + quicksilver through the worst parts. I ran a Seething flask which helped along with a bleed removal surgeons flask to counter the traps that did constant damage (because I just ran right through them).

  • @Magus I aways get caught by the roombas (excellent name BTW) when I don't expect them, I just can't see the pressure plates. If you guys had not called them out on that run I did with you, I wouldn't even know they existed.

@Lathun I actually got a lightning warp gem just to do the labyrinth. it really helps being able to skip the worst gauntlets.

There's a specific gauntlet that I absolutelly hate: the one just before a silver/gold cache where 2 tall spike traps go in opposite directions on the corridor. I aways end up hurt on this one, If only I could control the character with WASD, it would be so much better.

I'll probably reset this shadow into the movement skill's build I was planning before prophecy, now that he actually has 2 Ascendancy points it should be viable to reserve 100% mana and go nuts with WB + all heralds, just need to run some math to see if it's worth to get some reduced mana reserved nodes or not.

  • @Sentenryu said in Path of Exile:

I just can't see the pressure plates. If you guys had not called them out on that run I did with you, I wouldn't even know they existed.

I started recognizing them because of the sound effect, but then I noticed that they move too. In outdoor areas, they look like random tan tiles in the dirt, a bit more clean than the area around them. Those are the worst.

In the plaza, they're generally a hole in the ground that you can see gears through, and four tiles at the corners, which spin if you step on them.

In the prison, they're only ever on spike traps, where they show up as circles.

  • @Sentenryu I did the same, and eventually stuck with it because I got a good wand and couldn't find a good dagger to use WBs with.

Usually for that type of spike trap I lightning warp as far as I can on the side that is up (because you can't LW onto the spikes that are up) so it either fails or puts me there right when they go down and then I pop quicksilver and run through the rest. My character could easily outrun pressure plates trap activation with QS flask up.

  • @Lathun mine doesn't need the flask to outrun the spikes unless there's mobs on them.

Warp is not really viable to keep on a build that takes to many increased duration nodes as mine, it takes a century to teleport you. At the same time, I don't have enough attack speed to make WB fast enough.

  • @Sentenryu That would certainly be a problem, LW would probably be pretty bad in your build. For me it was a little slower than Blink Arrow.

You could try Flame Dash, although personally I find it to be very clunky, the delay before it goes off always messes with me, I usually move and then while moving hit flame dash and nothing happens, it seems like Flame Dash doesn't override movement for me or something weird like that. I basically have to stop moving for a solid second or so for it to actually cast.

You could always put a bow in your off weapon slot and use blink arrow, I do that sometimes on my melee builds until I need the other sockets for leveling.

  • @Lathun flame dash works best if you hold shift as you trigger it. What I don't understand is why it needs both a delay and a cooldown.

  • @Sentenryu Hm, I haven't tried that. I'll have to give it a whirl sometime, maybe I'll enjoy it more. I've seen some people link it with CWDT which seems super weird to me. Especially since it will probably proc 3x in a row instantly and then a huge delay as you slowly gain one charge which will likely proc as soon as you generate it.

  • @Lathun I can't imagine why someone would want to be moved on top of the attacker without any input. It does leave a damaging fire trail, maybe it's a lazy build?

  • @Sentenryu I really have no idea, it wasn't even a melee build - I think I saw it in an EK build. I guess it does damage as it passes through them but....yeah seems really dumb.

I guess because of this? https://www.reddit.com/r/pathofexile/comments/3dzcxb/psa_flame_dash_works_with_cwdt/

I guess that is okay for melee builds but I am still unsure why the EK person was using it.

  • @Lathun

Ah, well I built around that so I was definitely welcoming that aspect of it. Just wanted it to cruise me through mobs while I held down shift/attack :)

    yep, lazy build.

Edit: Wow, that emote is massive! a hard refresh fixed it, sadly

  • @Sentenryu I also have to point out that it probably doesn't target an enemy; it targets sort of randomly afaik.

My friend tried cast lightning warp on crit for some hilarity.

  • @Magus it targets the enemy that dealt the damage last

Targeting - Targeted spells will cast towards the enemy that caused the last damage. Reflected damage is considered to come from the enemy originally damaged.

Not sure what would happen if the target died as a result of reflect tho.

Edit: warping on crit sounds awesome and a headache at the same time

  • @Sentenryu said in Path of Exile:

Edit: warping on crit sounds awesome and a headache at the same time

It only makes one target at a time sadly, rather than acting like the lightning bolt one I never remember the name of.

  • I wonder if Cyclone CoC animate weapon would work, would it randomly target something or just fizzle?

  • @Lathun It should work. I think... but you'll want that new coat from prophecy first. I'd just go with the flaming skulls.

  • @Magus I'm probably going to do CoC phys spells but I was just curious if it would work with animate weapon. I assume if I did do animate weapon I would end up just unsummoning old ones before they could do anything and summoning new ones since cyclone triggers a lot.

  • @Lathun Animate weapons is like raging spirits, where you can pretty much cast as many as you want.

  • @Magus Hm, for some reason I thought it behaved more like zombies where you had a cap. I used the skill once when I got it (like 2-3 years ago) and stopped using it (unlike Animate Guardian which I thought was hilarious with my summoner build), I guess it would be okay then. Maybe I'll make a trolley CoC animate weapon build eventually this league just to see how it goes.

  • I just 3 shot malachai with 37 BV stacks. if this build wasn't a papper doll, I would keep it.

  • @Sentenryu it's such an incredibly powerful skill because of the charges. Looking forward to having them generate power charges for extra crit, causing extra blades, and more powerful discharges!

  • @Magus how would they generate power charges? with the assassin node for power charge on non crit? or with Power Charge on Critical Support? or both?

  • @Sentenryu either or both, that's a lot of charges!

  • HYPE!

Wish I could play before Sunday...!

  • @Magus It only hits on friday tho, I got home really hyped to play it but had to make do with getting my ass kicked by the oversoul on merciless standard.

fricking laser 2 shots me with fortify and 75% resists, the slam on shots me with 25k armor(flask), fortify and a physical reduction flask (not sure if those stack) I need better speed boots to get out of the way faster.

  • @Sentenryu The laser is a guaranteed shock unless you have shock avoidance, and is meant to be deadly. The slam is at least partially fire, and is meant to not be survivable. All of the oversoul's attacks have massive signaling before they happen though, because they're meant to be avoided.

  • @Magus the step up on difficulty is real, the laser does nothing on cruel.

I admit that I wanted to see if I would survive the slam with those defenses, but the laser was way too fast for me, I ended up just running around him for most of the fight and using my Earthquake when he tried the Ice attack.

I think it was fun (would have been more if I had more damage) but I'm starting to get frustrated that my defenses seen to not matter at all, as even normal mobs can deal 1k damage per hit to me. I start to wonder if it wouldn't be better to just invest into damage so that I can kill things faster and then just run away from danger, as this game has very little unavoidable damage (chaos damage auras being the exception, and those are really rare, I only saw one monster that has it until now)

then again, I do need to replace most of my gear to fix my resists after getting to merciless, I swaped a ring after my first death to the oversoul to get more lightning resist, but that cost me too much cold resist. And most of my gear has way more armor than anything I can get to replace it, my belt has 110 armor for starters

Is armor more or less valuable than 75% resist to a element?

  • @Sentenryu resists are probably the most important defense, yes.

  • I value getting capped resists over evasion / armor. It is much harder when it comes to life or ES for CI builds, but I would usually cap resists and lose 200-300 life than be at negative or low resists.

  • In that case, how good is acrobatics / phase acrobatics?

  • @Sentenryu Personally I really like it. I wouldn't use it if I wasn't doing an evasion build though. Some people don't like evasion builds though because of the spikes in damage.

  • @Sentenryu Ideally you have a shield, evasion, and dodge.

None of those except phase acrobatics protect against spells, so certain enemies will murder you. But against almost everything, you will very rarely take any damage at all.

Either way, you need LIFE. As much as possible. 3k will get you through most things, but you're still at risk.

Interestingly, since the damage calculation for armor is such that the higher the damage compared to the armor, the less mitigation occurs, evasion is much better against bosses than armor, except that some mitigation can still help - armor builds just hardly get any reduction against really dangerous enemies.

  • I usually aim for around 165-170% life from the tree on SC characters, but you can certainly go higher. I just like to play glass cannony builds so I usually grab more damage. ~200% life is a pretty decent checkpoint, although 185% should be fine for SC builds.

  • This is the skill tree of the character that makes me rage by dying too much: passive tree

(it's konohosame on my profile http://www.pathofexile.com/account/view-profile/Sentenryu/characters)

Aside from the mace nodes that I was on the process of undoing (dumb idea going for a stun build with my ammount of experience, worked fine on normal, not at all after cruel), should I've gone for more life than armor then?

I intend it to be like this one after reset: passive tree

That will give me enough resists to swap the "Corpse Grip" Ruby Ring I'm using by another that rolled +40% fire and lightning resistance, the only reason I'm not using that one now is because of the cold resistance that is already quite low.

(And don't mind the mess I made with the gems, I'm well aware it's quite bad right now, I'm using only enduring cry, the EQ links and Heavy strike, the rest is just leveling)

  • @Sentenryu I think you'll actually find that quite a bit better.

  • @Magus even with half the armor?

Edit: well, it's giving up 5k armor for 1k health, considering how armor is doing nothing for me right now, I might be getting a better deal than I think...
