Human Resources

  • So, I called up to ask some questions about an application for some voluntary work...

"Hi, you've reached the voicemail of Jane Doe. I'll be out of the office until Wednesday-"

Damn. Oh, well, I can call back...

"-the 30th of April. If you're calling about PCSO applications, the deadline has been extended blah blah blah..."

You have got to be kidding me.

"If you're calling to request a PCSO or Specials application pack, please email me or leave a message and I'll get back to you after April the 30th."

    *click*

Note that I chose to use the telephone because I figured that, like most people, the lady I needed to speak to gets more work-related emails a day than
she can possibly hope to read whilst still getting any work done. And if she hasn't got around to changing her answerphone message after a minimum of five weeks, maximum of about two years, there's probably little prospect of her returning my calls.

I wouldn't have bothered posting here, except that the person I was trying to contact was the head of HR for my county's Police Force, the voluntary work in question being the office of Special Constable.

Why a maximum of 2 years? April 30 was a Wednesday in 2003. Hell, it was a Wednesday in 1755, too.

Talk amongst yourselves.  I'll give you a topic of discussion: Human Resources is neither human nor resourceful

  •  You're right, actually. I just didn't think PCSOs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Police_Community_Support_Officer) had been around as long as that.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

    She's on a sabattical until 2014? Hope you weren't in a hurry....

This is actually a possibility that I'm unwilling to dismiss out of hand.

Well, from the Wiki, "Police Community Support Officers were introduced by the Police Reform Act 2002," so 2003 works. Or maybe she found some clue in Nostradamus's Prophecies that 247 years later PCSOs would be created.

    "Voluntary!?"

Holy crapola, you don't even get paid for taking all that abuse?

    That's TRWTF.

    Yer tags don't match!

  • You actually think that HR should be in the role of hiring people? They shouldn't. HR is payroll, benefits, and provides support to the people that really do the hiring which is usually the direct manager of the open position. Also we do human capital reporting and general people accounting. And we run the latest cutting edge technology in HR Systems like *cough* PeopleSoft.

There's an epedemic misunderstanding about this.

    Love,

    Your useless guy in HR.

  • ^ that was more to taylor and the discussion in the middle of the post than the OP btw ... :-.)
