So I want to extend a repeating meeting. This is basic functionality that any calendar should be able to do. But not Lotus Notes.
I know it says "excluding Repeating Meetings", but I don't see a way to change it for meetings either.
-
@JoeCool Note that Lotus Notes has been around since 1986 and is on version... what 10? 9 or 10 now.
-
@blakeyrat I'm using 9. Not sure if there's a 10 and I don't want to know.
-
@JoeCool you still use that piece of worm-ridden shit? Ouch. My sympathies.
-
It still exists? Wow, how the fuck did that manage to dodge the bullet?
-
It's used for so many things. Vacation requests, support, etc.
Like yellow-boxing gloves guy said, it's not just an email client
-
@JoeCool I miss him.

I'll give you a hint:

For people who don't understand IBM, years ago they decided they were going to stop focusing on software and begin focusing on consulting.
Now here's a pop quiz-- what kind of software needs more consulting:
- Barely functional shitty and buggy pieces of shit that are, while shitty and buggy, also extremely configurable?
- Usable, reliable software that needs little special configuration out-of-the-box and users love?
So is it any wonder that IBM products are shitty and buggy? No. They're designed that way. On purpose. (Seriously. Is there any other rational thought process that could have resulted in them re-factoring Lotus Notes to run on top of Eclipse?)

@Tsaukpaetra There's a difference between the ocean and IBM. One is populated by constantly grinning man-eating sharks. The other is a large mass of water that covers 71% of Earth's surface.

Reanalyzing statements including new information...
Ohhhhh.....
-
@Tsaukpaetra In any case, as a resident of Washington State, I can say with certainty that the ocean is, in fact, grey and not blue.

@blakeyrat said in I hate Lotus Notes:

Yeah, it's been a while since it's been less-than human affected...
All those idyllic pictures just don't really happen anymore...
I have a feeling they're all rendered computer generated ideas now.
-
@blakeyrat Outside of software that has to be configured to model complex real life things, like a pipeline.

Do what, you say?
No. No no no no no no no.
-
@blakeyrat said in I hate Lotus Notes:

It's just reflecting the color of the sky, which is also grey and not blue in Washington State.
-
I think also that Lotus Notes is used by lots of non-U.S.-based companies instead of, say, Outlook or something else that works.

rational thought process
Sounds like another IBM product right there, to go with Rational Rose.
-
@Onyx Thankfully not.
-
@dkf Be glad you never had to touch Rational Functional Tester
-
@Yamikuronue does the "rational" part pertain to the rage you start experiencing soon after?
-
If you haven't experienced the horrors of Lotus Notes, maybe a quick reading will convince you it's one of the worst programs to ever have been sold on a commercial basis
-
@Yamikuronue Oh, for the love of Christ. You had to mention that.

I suggest some further reading if you don't remember Lotus Notes Guy:

My god, I heard the stories but I didn't know it was that bad...
-
@Sumireko Or any of the million threads I made on it back in Community Server days.
-
@Lathun It's really quite like nodeBB.

Yes.
IBM didn't like Sun very much. Hence the name "Eclipse". That joke falls down a bit now there's no Sun anymore.
IBM were positioning Eclipse to be a rich client platform for any purpose and SWT poster boy. Eclipse IDE is built on the platform but isn't the whole story and they wanted to tell the whole story. Notes was obviously in dire need of some serious rework, so they decided to use what they wanted to be their premiere platform to recreate it.
I'm not saying it was a good idea (I have hardly used Notes at all and it was well before the Eclipse platform version), but it makes sense for them as part of their strategic direction for reasons other than "Let's make shit software so people pay us consulting money to make it seem better!".
-
@Sumireko I'm not going to tell you that Notes is any good because I haven't used it in more than a decade (and also because is really wasn't good, at least back then), but all of that UI is from ancient versions. Post a review of a modern version.

Pffft. And you said Seattle is a great place. Come on down to Fort Lauderdale, where the water's the color of the Platonic ideal of blue.

The part about adding signatures to your messages reminds me of when I had to use WordPerfect Office on a Unix system (without X11) in the early 90s. I couldn’t find a way to add signatures or even to quote messages, and when I asked him about this, the system admin told me to save the original message, reply, import the saved message into the reply, and add >’s by hand. Signatures worked much the same way: make one in a text editor, save as a text file, and import it into every message.
Also, Winnie Pooh the Lotus Notes signature genius seems to have trouble deciding on gender:
If this feature is something you could use, please send an email request directly to Winnie Pooh. She will send you a small Lotus Notes database, a SmartIcon, and installation instructions that will allow you to create multiple signatures.
This is really a great innovation on Winnie's part and I'm sure that everyone who wants to use a signature on their emails will appreciate his persistence in developing this solution!

@Gurth never heard of genderfluid? Bigot!

And heat, humidity and hurricanes. No thanks. I'll take my earthquakes and perfect weather over that...

Those screenshots from the ancient version look very similar to the current version.

Large bodies of water are mostly the colour of the sky. @blakeyrat lives in Seattle where the sun is unknown so his ocean is the same grey colour as the constant cloud cover.

Sure, if someone spent two hours stuffing near-molten glass up my urethra, I'd also say anything. Especially if they threatened to escalate to making me use Notes.
#ThatsAWin
Wow so spending 4-man hours to get someone to say they "like" notes is a win. Amazing.
