NodeBB avatars

I was on desktop, tethering trough a very slow phone (because data plan exceeded), and the page reveals itself very slow. A big cartoonish lion showing.
Oh Oh ! A new fa-spin ? No, it finally redraws normal.
The big lion ? It was durowin avatar, in all its glorious 1252x1252, 173KB.
This seems suboptimal re load times and maybe jellypotato.
It is NodeBB 'working as intended' or what ?

Link to user /name?

-
@cabrito oh, I thought the show was called durowin
-
Avatars weren't modified during migration, so that's what it was on Discourse. Avatars get resized if they're re-uploaded.
-
@ben_lubar It may have actually even been Community Server when I registered.
-
@cabrito Speaking of him ...
NodeBB lies!
-
@aliceif I might produced that, when going from the avatar to drurowin profile, and trying to see if the image there was the 1252x1252.
Click on image do not expanded, but wait, there's some misterious microicon in the image. click.. mhhh, nothing ? let spam that click, click, click, click... Oh, I see a tower of notifications... follow, not follow, ... error ?. Upps.
-
-
@ben_lubar oh, you're waiting for everyone to reupload? I know I'm not planning to, in a foreseeable future.
-
@fbmac I mean, users only need to download the avatars once and then they're cached, so whatever.

Weren't you going to set up a batch process or something to run every image through the Avatar Resizer?

I think most of the regulars just resized their avatars themselves.

I don't know how to, when I do it with ImageMagick it sets off my virus scanner when I'm done. :/
-
@drurowin after a little fiddling with some javascript and other shenanigans....
here ya go. resized down to 256x256
now go see @abarker about getting a snazzy hat for your lion. ;-)
-
@accalia this is someone else's llion*, people used to make fun of my lion for having a nose that looked like a loaf of bread so I switched. :(
(*it's a hybrid of a lion and another lion.)

you can still get it hatted. ;-)

Why are you resizing your avatar locally at all? Just re-upload it and let the server handle it.

Why are people re-uploading at all, when the server already has the avatar AND the means to re-size it?

Mostly because I don't want to make my avatar blurry.

Selfish bastard, are you denying us our right to automatically blurred avatars?

It amused me quite a bit at the time that had resized my avatar making it much larger than the original and that it was making page-loads take longer than necessary. It was a very moment.
-
@drurowin Oh man I miss the loaf. Do you still have the loaf?
BTW now that I've seen some of the abominably awful drawings Accalia avatars-around in, I no longer think the lion-loaf is bad art. I mean it is bad art, but the barrel's bottom has been extended downwards.

:/ If the image resizer is making images blurry, then there's something wrong with the image resizer.
Look, even I've done this on a site I managed. Every post had a full-sized title card. But that title card was also used as a thumbnail in three different sizes (depending on the page). My options were:
- Ask the site owner to manually re-upload every fucking image. There were 1000+ of them. I wasn't going to do that
- Serve the users FUCKING HUGE images css'd down to 60x60-- where there were dozens of those on a single page. I wasn't going to do that.
- Write a tiny script that went "for each post, get image, call the site's RESIZE() function for each size, done", and let that chug once for an hour
And the images were properly sized and not blurry.

My avatar specifically. QR codes don't lend themselves to resizing with interpolation the way a photo would.
-
@ben_lubar resize all and reupload yours then, don't ask everyone else to upload theirs.
Current situation is more silly than Discourse's avatar cdn.

Plus, uploads are cached clientside by the browser for up to a year, so I'm not sure what you're complaining about. You download each user's avatar once a year.

@fbmac said in NodeBB avatars:
@ben_lubar browser cache doesn't work so well as you think it does
You can workaround it:
- inject the image directly in NodeBB after the resizing
- create a version of your avatar that already looks fine in nodebb target size and upload it
I'd much rather do this:
- Let users upload avatars as usual and ignore the non-problem unless someone has a multi-megabyte avatar, in which case simply re-upload it.

It's my photo on LinkedIn, I think. I'll go download it from there and upload it here.

note to self, do more "bad art" avatars. if blakey hates them i must be doing it right.

I disable caching in my browser in honor of your shitty internet connection.

@FrostCat I feel like that is the 2010s version of "farting in your general direction, your mother was some furry rodent and your father had a peculiar fruity aroma."
