Is there a way to say to the Online Promotion Firm something like "not on my site!" ?

  • Wow, I almost missed the joke, but luckily you explained it with some brillant art work.

Well at least now there can be no arguments about what is TRWTF. We have been explicitely, clearly and obviously told in no uncertain terms.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

  • Somehow "Get the facts" is associated with a different religion for me.

    bstorer: It's only a part-time job; I can't watch the forums 24/7!

  • Not only is it a dupe as has pointed out, but you titled this one as "The Biggest WTF". Considering random advertising is exactly that -- random -- it's not much of a WTF. So, you get a mug.

  •  TRWTF is running Firefox without Adblock.

You mean so that in the end we'll all have to pay for content instead of seeing advertisements? If you thank that's a good future you're TRWTF™

Imo, the stupid ones should be the ones who see the Ads. Those too stupid to install an adblocker and stupid enough to fall for the ads. Am I not right? No?

Yeah you're wrong on that one. I don't pay for TV, and I don't pay for web sites. Ads are the reason why - and on most sites, the ads are appropriate and I click them frequently. I click ads for software I might want on development sites, and on hobby sites I click the ads for the new products. This is the same behavior as showing up at the local Subway for their $5 special, which I would not know about if it wasn't for the ads. Ads are good - they keep the web free, and if you're so annoyed by them that you can't focus on a site without blocking the ads, I think you're the one with the problem. For the most part, ads that you aren't interested in do nothing to harm your experience, and the ads that you are interested in, well - you should click them! Help the site owners keep the sites free - we're programmers here, we should be aware of the fact that web sites are not created and maintained for free...

I have ads on my blog now - I put them there because I think they help people find products they need. If the ads were completely random I don't think I would like that, but the way they are, it's good. I don't care if I make any money from it, but I do think it's nice to have. For the users, not just for me.

I don't think there's any such thing as "random ads". If there is, you'd have to be pretty dumb to use them.

Fine, "algorithmically-chosen ads".  Is that accurate enough, Professor Advertising?

Yeah, put aside the "complete different meaning".

I said "random" as in "not hardcoded". Even if it's chosen by an algorithm, it's still random as far as any visitor is concerned.

     <hints id="hah_hints"></hints>

I don't think that the reason for ad blockers is that people are morally opposed to advertising (well, maybe some of them are).  It's more that the standards for advertising on the web are... um... nonexistent, and without a blocker we're routinely assailed by obnoxious, invasive, flashing, seizure-inducing ads, which do a lot to harm our experience.  Or worse, focus-stealing popups or giant Flash ads that suck up resources and slow down page load times.  And of course there are always the NSFW ads that I see at work.

I figure tit for tat - whenever I have one of those ads foisted on me, I block that entire ad network.  If the ads on a site are tasteful I leave them alone.  I think if everybody did this, it wouldn't suddenly force us all to pay for content, it just might force the advertisers to be a little more discerning in their taste.  Because that is the problem; TV networks and radio stations screen their ads, while online advertisers don't seem to give half a damn.

Hell, there have even been instances of drive-by-downloads happening in ads.  Any advertiser careless enough to let this through should be shut down immediately.

You'll have to excuse morbiuswilters. He's gone blind from all the masturbating, and until he gets that screen reader, he's just going to post random replies to things. To those of you who are bothered by this, I apologize on his behalf. For those that didn't even notice a difference, as well as those who find this to be an improvement, I apologize that it will eventually end.

How is this any different than the brilliant 'Troll Management' ideas or the GM scripts?

    That's my S.O.P.

The ones I block are those that insist on showing me "You're the 999999999 visitor you won!", the "smileys!" and other similar ad networks. Google text-ads don't bug me at all.

Those aren't double postings, shithead, that is me replying with an individual post to an individual post.

    People get confused otherwise.

This has been explained by welbog very eloquently recently to another newbie who decided to try and educate experienced forum users on how to post.

    Here you go:

That's not really double-posting, though. That's replying to different posts in a row. I think Welbog made a good point about this, even if he does like day-old cake.

Sorry, but I don't see how "chosen based on the content of the page" isn't pretty much the exact opposite of random. The fact that some algorithm found a word on the page and (mis)matched the ad to it is the entire reason these things get posted in the first place.

  • @dtech said:

Nah, that's a side effect of viewing what is apparently a threaded forum in flat view.  It's all explained here because some completely retarded idiot, who's been hanging around here for a while and is actually a complete newbie even though he doesn't realise it, failed to realise that this is a threaded forum and made the stupid amateur mistake of thinking that MPS was doubleposting when in fact he was being quite reasonable.  This was likely due to this brainless kiddie somehow mistakenly thought himself to be cleverer than MPS and was trying to find fault with him it a pointless and extremely misguided effort to 'make himself look good'.  Hopefully the loser has learned his lesson now, but if he ever shows his face around here again, for instance to post a link that has already been posted twice by people far superior than him, I shall be forced to hunt the kid down and rearrange his face with a rusty shovel.

Some people just don't deserve to live.  The world is a sad place because of people like that.  Hopefully MPS finds a way to scare the lamer away before I have to take drastic action.
