So apparently we're letting spammers sign up and instantly sent people spam.
Signup protection? What's that?
Trust levels? Why do we need those?
=(

@Lorne-Kates TIL that .exposed is a valid TLD. I bet there's a bunch of revenge porn sites that I haven't found yet.

@anotherusername said in Lorne pointing out NodeBB problems from Blakeyrat's thread pointing out NodeBB problems except Lorne's thread is better:
@Lorne-Kates TIL that .exposed is a valid TLD.
.exposed is an active gTLD that was proposed in ICANN's New gTLD Program. The Registry and manager of the TLD is Donuts.
Donuts is a start-up company that was created to apply and run new gTLDs as made possible by ICANN's gTLD expansion program; On June 5, 2012, Donuts announced that it submitted applications for 307 generic top level domain names.
-
@El_Heffe Why not? ICANN opened up a new market, a new company comes to (potentially) take advantage of it. Where's the WTF?

... because...?
-
@blakeyrat because in addition to .com, .org, .net, .edu, .gov, .mil, and all of the country-specific TLDs... why the fuck do we need 307 more of them? It's way too many.
-
@anotherusername said in Lorne pointing out NodeBB problems from Blakeyrat's thread pointing out NodeBB problems except Lorne's thread is better:

Why not have a billion of them?

Too many because...?
Do you have an actual reason with actual rational thought behind it here, or are you just knee-jerkin'?
-
@blakeyrat said in Lorne pointing out NodeBB problems from Blakeyrat's thread pointing out NodeBB problems except Lorne's thread is better:

Because there are a billion billion different things you can put in front of the TLD. You don't need a TLD for every little niche website; that's what the rest of the domain name is for. And it hinders the ability to easily look and go "is that a valid domain name? well the TLD is some random word, so probably not". Like is "your.cock.here" a valid domain name? Fuck if I know, now. Go look up ".here" and tell me if it's valid or not.
-
@anotherusername said in Lorne pointing out NodeBB problems from Blakeyrat's thread pointing out NodeBB problems except Lorne's thread is better:

So? That actually brings up a better point: why have a TLD at all? Why not let people just have domains with no TLD.
@anotherusername said in Lorne pointing out NodeBB problems from Blakeyrat's thread pointing out NodeBB problems except Lorne's thread is better:
You don't need a TLD for every little niche website;
You don't even need a DNS system at all. People could just carry around huge notebooks full of IP addresses. So let's leave "need" on the table for the moment.
What harm does it do for "every little niche website" to have a TLD? Who's it hurting?
@anotherusername said in Lorne pointing out NodeBB problems from Blakeyrat's thread pointing out NodeBB problems except Lorne's thread is better:

So your concern is you're a registrar and you don't want to update your database?

Why do you care? Either you want to visit your.cock.here or you don't. If you do, visit it. If you don't, who cares.

Who's it hurting for them to just have to pick from the set of TLDs that we already had? They don't need a .casino domain name.
-

Given that ICANN was planning on (or did, I can't remember) opening up generic TLDs-- so that anyone can apply for anything-- are you surprised?
Millions of dollars came flooding in from bidding wars for gTLDs that could be owned by multiple different companies. Who gets .apple? Bezos or the Beetles? Who gets .amazon? Bezos or the African government?
The answer is money.

There's a casino near me named Horseshoe. They actually own horseshoe.com, but let's pretend they didn't, that horseshoe.com was owned by someone selling shoes for horses or shaped like horses or whatever. Who can remember horseshoe.net vs horsehoe.com? But horseshoe.casino is easy to remember.
-
@Yamikuronue but "horseshoe-casino.com" would be too hard to remember?
-
@anotherusername Hyphen or no hyphen? Or underscore? or was it casino.horsehoe.com?
It's not strictly necessary, like Blakey said, but it's not a bad idea if you're struggling to disambiguate yourself.
-
@Yamikuronue that's no harder to remember than whether it's "horseshoe" or "horseshoes".
And... even if you want to cover all your bases, you just register all of them (that are available). Now, in addition to all of the different variations, you have to register each of them on the .casino TLD too.
-
@anotherusername And the usual answer to that is to register both just in case :)
-
@anotherusername I'd worry more about
.sucks
. And.wtf
. And.xxx
, if that can be remotely applied to your product.
-
@PleegWat nah, normally for those you just wait until someone registers one and then send them a C&D threatening them for unauthorized use of your trademark.
-
@anotherusername said in Lorne pointing out NodeBB problems from Blakeyrat's thread pointing out NodeBB problems except Lorne's thread is better:

To repeat myself:
They don't even need a DNS system at all.
The point isn't "need". The entire system is a convenience. Nobody needs it. Stop using the word "need" when you mean something other than "need", at least not without explaining what you actually mean.
-
@blakeyrat people can not "just carry around huge notebooks full of IP addresses". That isn't even remotely practical. We "need" something else. The something else is DNS.
When I say "they don't need a .casino domain name", I mean that the alternatives are perfectly adequate, not some absurdly stupid scenario where everybody carries around a giant ledger of IP addresses just to prove that we don't "need" DNS. By that logic we don't "need" the internet at all. Or computers. Or the internal combustion engine. Or the fucking wheel.

Yeah, @anotherusername , you NEED to stop using the word need.
