The motherlode of Japanese crap

  • Okay, so I was reading through the Bruce Schneier blog in preference to working, and ran across this: The International Chindogu Society.

The basic idea is to create something that is a) useful, and b) totally humiliating to actually use. As an example, a feather duster with a martini shaker on top. The gallery is unfortunately brief, but entertaining.

    Let the WTFs begin!

  • Thanks for sharing.  That was awesome.

  • Hmm.. I thought this was going to be scat pornography at first, but it actually turned out to be quite interesting.  Nominated for the, uh..  what's the opposite of the Mug?

You did make me take my pants off for no reason, though.

  •  I remember reading about chindogu many years ago.  Chopsticks with little fans on them to cool your noodles come to mind.  And a butter dispenser that was a twist tube (like a glue stick).  I also remember a gadget for taking panoramic photos, which was a hat with several disposable cameras arranged around it and hooked up so you could activate them simultaneously.  Definitely a crossover between clever and ridiculous.  (Reminds me of my own brain)

Fairly close to hell.  Watch what you think or she'll strangle you with her mind.

  •  An Australian television show, "The New Inventors' (Named "The New" because it is a revival of "The Inventors" which ran for some ~20 years into the '80's), irregularly presents a short clip showing a ChinDogu. It begins by displaying one of the Tennants, then a Japanese lady shows the invention, followed by here looking adorably stupid [attempting] to use it.

Although, occasionally, one feels that a ChinDdogu has escaped and made it into the main program....

That show is great... And someone, somewhere might find a use for the Spoton glasses.

  • Very entertaining. I remember it from some children's show in the UK years ago. Not sure what that show was but I certainly remember some of these inventions. Thanks for the memories.

Anyone else wonder how long it would be before the word "chinchin" starts appearing elsewhere in the forum?
